Zedekiah (also known as Zed) and Maynard are the secondary antagonists of Quentin Tarantino's 1994 crime thriller film Pulp Fiction, serving as the main antagonists of the chapter "The Gold Watch".
They are a pair of brothers who run a pawn shop, which they use as a front to kidnap, torture, and rape men in Los Angeles, one of whom is crime boss Marcellus Wallace and the other one is underground boxer Butch.
Zed was portrayed by Peter Greene and Maynard was portrayed by Duane Whitaker.
What Makes Them Pure Evil?[]
- They kidnapped, raped and killed many men in their pawn shop before the film’s events. One of these men was named Russel, as they mention the room they take Wallace to is called “Russel’s old room”.
- Another one of these men that were kidnapped and tortured was “The Gimp,” who is all but said to have been tortured into a human pet by the brothers, and they presumably were willing to have Wallace or Butch be their next Gimp.
- They kidnapped Marcellus Wallace and Butch in the pawn shop and took them in the back to rape and kill them next.
- With Zed using a sadistic and racist “eenie meenie miny moe” game, he chose Wallace and the two dragged him into Russel’s old room to rape him as they had The Gimp watch Butch until they made him their next victim, before proceeding to brutally rape Marcellus as Maynard cheered him on, playing with complete horror and traumatizing the poor man.
- The two don’t exhibit any care for one another beyond sadistic perversion, with Zed showing no concern for Maynard dying and only trying to keep himself alive.
- While Zed’s death is particularly brutal—being shot in the crotch with the shotgun and tortured to death by Wallace—it is nothing less than the epitome of karmic considering Zed was a serial rapist.
- While they have a few comedic moments, none of these distract them from their villainy, but rather showing how perverted they are.
- While there are several other rapists in the Tarantinoverse, most of the time it's either offscreen or implied, with Zed’s rape of Marsellus Wallace being onscreen and his other crimes that aren't shown having onscreen effects, such as The Gimp.
