Enjoyment and excitement!
~ Wyald's often repeated motto.
Geez, talk about uncouth. Being bothered while I'm slaying or laying... ...pisses me off the most!
~ Wyald

Wyald is a major antagonist of the Golden Age Arc in the Berserk series. He was an Apostle who was also the leader of the Black Dog Knights and was hired by King of Midland in order to kill Griffith and Band of Hawk.

He was voiced by Shigeru Chiba in the pachinko adaptation Berserk - Kaishingeki! Dotō no Yōhei-dan and by Kunihiro Kawamoto in Berserk Musou.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • In the past, he sacrificed someone he loved in order to become an Apostle.
  • He kills Barbo by impaling him on the spire of a tower to earn the fear and respect of the other convicts of the King of Midland.
  • He strangles one of his concubines to death after their sex is finished, even though she does nothing to deserve it.
  • Using fear, power, and sadism, he made the Black Dog Knights the cruelest army in all of Midland, where his men would rob, rape, and kill anyone on the battlefield, even children. He also shows himself to be a ruthless rapist and will forcefully have sex with any woman he comes across, willing or not.
  • He and the Black Dogs massacre an entire farm for aiding the Band of the Hawk, burning children alive while he rapes an innocent young lady, leaving no survivors. He and the other Black Dogs dismember the villagers and have their body parts skewered on their swords.
  • He holds absolutely no affection for his men, killing them whenever he pleases. In fact, the treatment of his men is so horrible that even after seeing their comrades being easily slaughtered by Guts, they continue advancing. As Guts observed, all of them were being driven by fear, demonstrating how they'd rather die at the hands of Guts than disobey Wyald.
  • Wyald completely disregards the deaths of his soldiers when they cross the booby-trapped bridge. Then, when one of his soldiers objects to going down the main road and falling straight into the enemy's hands, Wyald crushes his skull in response.
  • When the Black Dogs fell victim to traps laid out by the Hawks, Wyald intentionally activated them to laugh at how they would kill his minions. As his men die, he says the sound of his men being crushed by boulders is music to his ears.
  • After the Black Dogs start retreating, Wyald kills them for their cowardice before facing the Hawks himself.
  • He sarcastically apologizes to Casca for scaring her and tearing her clothes before attempting to rape her to death.
  • He fakes his death to catch the Hawks by surprise and take Griffith hostage.
  • He mocks the Hawks by revealing Griffith's mangled body to diminish any hope they had of regaining their former glory with Griffith as their leader and by utterly humiliating Griffith by showing his weakened body to his men.
  • He reveals his intention of using the Crimson Beherit to activate the Eclipse just to save himself. Then, when he discovers Griffith doesn't have the Crimson Beherit, he attempts to kill Griffith despite him being the future fifth member of the God Hand, showing no loyalty to them whatsoever.
  • When Nosferatu Zodd stabs him, Wyald cowardly attempts to save himself by convincing Zodd he was only following the "Do as thou will" order from the God Hand.
  • Although it's implied that Wyald suffered from bad health due to his old age and desperately became an Apostle to avoid it, this is not used to make him sympathetic whatsoever.

Trivia[]

  • Wyald is considered by many in the Berserk fanbase to be the most despicable villain apart from Griffith because of the sheer depravity of his actions. This has also contributed to his rather divisive reputation with some seeing him as a memorably sadistic villain who foreshadowed Griffith's transformation into Femto, while others hate him for being overly edgy and tasteless even by the standards of the franchise.
