Well, all YOU need is ME! Your best friend is ME, WOOLY! Not some weird slobbering little MUTANT!

You know what I want? I want everything to go back to the way it W—W—WAS, Amanda. All I've ever wanted is a nice place where things make SENSE. A place where we could be best friends FOREVER. We don't have to think about what's going on anywhere else, Amanda. But you keep pushing, and pushing, and PUSHING, and NOW, it's all BROKEN!! Why do you ask so many questions? Why can't you, and your STUPID FRIEND... JUST LET THINGS BE—E—E—E—E—E—E—E?!

Marcus Moutman, better known as Wooly the Sheep and as his bestial form as The Shepherd, is the main antagonist of the Amanda the Adventurer trilogy.

He was an employee for Hameln Entertainment who was set to maintain and keep Amanda stable. However, Marcus only really wanted to enter the cartoon world to relive childhood joy. Eventually, around 2003, Marcus' soul was placed into the cartoon and used as Wooly the Sheep, Amanda's sidekick.

In the first two games of the main series trilogy, he is seemingly presented as a heroic deuteragonist who was just a victim of Amanda and wanted to help the main series' protagonist, Riley Park, survive and stop Amanda by burning the tapes. However, In Amanda the Adventurer 3, it was revealed that he was the true mastermind, manipulating both Riley and Amanda so he could stay in the cartoon world and continue to live like a child again. He is the former best friend–turned-archenemy of both Riley Park and Amanda.

He is voiced by the series creator James Pratt as Wooly the Sheep and portrayed by Sean Doherty as Marcus Moutman.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Despite it being indicated that Marcus has a slightly tragic past, as it's implied that he had no friends and wanted to relive his childhood again because he was unhappy with his life as a grownup, even proclaiming that growing up "isn't all it's cracked up to be" to Amanda, it's far too brief to make him sympathetic in the slightest as he is mostly portrayed as a pathetic and deranged manchild who helped trap and manipulate a young girl so he could be best friends with her and live out his childhood fantasy.
    • Furthermore, even though Hameln most likely corrupted him, leaving his body to rot away after he entered the cartoon world, this also doesn't make him tragic at all since he willingly signed to enter the cartoon world and even constantly tried to keep it going just so he could relive his childhood again.
      • While he mentions that no one ever listens to what he wants, and all anyone did to him was make promises they couldn't keep, which further indicates his possible corruption at the hands of Hameln, it is way too vague to be considered sympathetic.
  • His hypocrisy has been shown multiple times.
    • He seems to call out Riley for saying that funerals are a reason to celebrate, even though he wanted to have a party after slaughtering numerous people.
    • He is upset at Amanda for not caring what he wants even though he does not care about what she wants either.
    • He's upset at how people don't keep their promises to him despite the fact that he's a liar himself.
  • While he was treated quite poorly by Amanda in the cartoon world, being injured and attacked by the latter several times, and even having his eye brutally ripped out by Chicken Scratch, this ultimately doesn't make him a scapegoat or sympathetic at all since it’s revealed that he had been mentally abusing and keeping Amanda the whole time, and thus deserved it.
  • Although he acted affable as a human, being kind towards the interviewer, this does not hold up considering this is how people usually act during job interviews, meaning it was likely nothing more than professionalism. Even if it was sincere, any affability he had as Marcus is subverted due to how he acted as Wooly by the third game.
    • Though he also commonly acted affably as Wooly, this was either subverted or revealed to be a façade by Amanda the Adventurer 3, and while it does seem like he regained his affability towards both Amanda and Riley by the end of the third installment, he would finally shed this once and for all in his villainous breakdown.
  • Even though he had several comedic slapstick moments during the first two games, and for a majority of the third game as well, such as Amanda constantly insulting him, and Chicken Scratch attacking him, these moments were before he revealed his true nature. Additionally, his worst actions are taken completely seriously, especially during the third game, and his breakdown in “Let’s Have A Party!” is treated as a moment of terror, with the background music being tense and horrifying.
  • While one could argue he has standards, as when Riley answers that they would want to throw a party over a funeral, Wooly answers with "Why would you want to throw a party over that?", it doesn't hold up, as he seems more confused or annoyed then disturbed or shocked during this.
    • Even if he was disturbed or shocked, it still wouldn't hold up, as Wooly was incredibly happy after he killed Jordan and all of the other missing children so he could be alone with his “best friend” Amanda, even wanting to throw a party with her over it, meaning he would also want to throw a party over peoples' deaths, thus making him even more hypocritical.
  • Despite having genuine insecurities about Amanda not paying attention to him, him having trust issues, and possibly also on his appearance due to how he sees himself in the mirror, these aren't played for sympathy as his insecurities about Amanda are portrayed as more petty then actually sympathetic, his insecurities about being distrustful of others highlight how much of a hypocrite he is given that he lies himself, and his insecurities about his appearance are too brief to be played for sympathy. It’s also possible that he’s not even actually bothered with his appearance and instead is just scared of the fact his human body is dead, with the corpse being shown in the mirror in “Let’s Have A Party!”.
  • His "friendship" with Amanda is nothing more than a one-sided obsession on his side, as although he views himself to be her best friend, he still nonetheless helped trap her in the cartoon world, not caring for her well-being, and had mentally manipulated her for 20 years in order to keep the cartoon fantasy going, even getting jealous after she and Jordan became friends. He even blew up at her after she didn't continue with the fantasy, and even gave the Shepherd the command to kill her and Riley, subverting any possible care he ever had for her.
    • What makes his “friendship” with Amanda all the more unsettling is that Marcus is a grown man who has likely been obsessed with her since she was 8 years old, with him being her “best friend” as Wooly for 4 more years into her childhood, and while Rebecca was likely an adult by the time the first game took place, its worth noting that she is probably still a child mentally due to never being able to grow up properly, meaning that even by the time the games take place, his supposed friendship with her can still be viewed as creepy.
  • Although he seems to care about animals, as he wanted to scare two birds away from a birdhouse so they wouldn’t be eaten by Mama Cat and her family, and he also wanted to help a butterfly who lost one of its wings, this doesn’t hold up as it’s likely he just wanted to present himself as a good person to Riley. In addition to this, the animals he wanted to help don’t actually seem to be sentient beings, with them being entirely virtual and there being no indication they contain anyone’s souls. Even if he did genuinely care about animals at one point, he subverts it in the third game where he not only allows a fish to suffocate during the beach tape (should Riley have brought it into the cartoon world) despite the fact there was nearby water he could have tossed the fish in, but he also becomes abusive towards the opossum Chicken Scratch, even going as far as to eventually murder him.
  • While he did follow Hameln’s orders, there’s no indication that he was loyal to the company, most likely only following their orders so he’d get to stay in the cartoon world.
  • Although he is implied to be mentally ill, with him having the mentality of a child and having an unhealthy obsession with the cartoon world, nothing suggests he does not know right and wrong, given how intelligent and manipulative he is, meaning he has complete moral agency.
  • Though some could argue the Shepherd is a separate being from Marcus/Wooly as how the Colton Anomaly is a separate being from Rebecca/Amanda, there's no evidence that it's true as while the Colton Anomaly manifested from all the negativity of Rebecca's mind and both of them had different, independent minding and varying opinions from each other, the Shepherd was actually created using Marcus's DNA and none of them seem to have different minds and/or varying opinions from each other, further proving that the Shepherd, Marcus and Wooly were all one being.

Background[]

  • He applied to Hameln, a corrupt company, and during the interview, he stated that he was fine with doing anything, even if it was morally dubious, as long as it pleased the company.
  • It is implied by Blabbo the Clown that Marcus was a very problematic, mean-spirited and violent Hameln employee, as Blabbo called him a "bad boy", and that Blabbo hopes "he's happy with what he's become", when explaining Marcus’s story to Riley Park.
  • He was likely one of the employees who helped maintain and force Rebecca into the cartoon world to turn her into Amanda, giving her a fate worse than death.
  • He gladly accepted having his soul transported into the cartoon world so he could maintain Amanda better as her guardian and sidekick, turning himself into Wooly the Sheep.
    • Prior to that, he also accepted an experimentation using his own DNA to create the Shepherd to combat the Colton Anomaly. But while Hameln created the Shepherd for that purpose, given that the Shepherd had no different minding from Marcus, he wanted to use the Shepherd so no one would free Rebecca Colton from the cartoon world.
  • He manipulated and gaslighted Amanda so he could keep the fantasy of the cartoon realm, brainwashing her into forgetting her past and making her commit numerous crimes, and he did this for roughly 20 years, and all of this led into Amanda going insane and forgetting who she really is.
  • He manipulated numerous individuals into trusting him, and after they tried to free Amanda from the cartoon world, he brutally killed them all.

Amanda the Adventurer[]

  • Although he didn't like the idea of using sharp knives or using the oven alone without a parent, this was very likely to have been merely a facade to portray himself as a selfless and caring individual.
  • He would constantly try to stop Amanda from mailing the letter to Kate Park, as the latter had came into contact with her from the real world, and Wooly feared Amanda may be able to escape.
  • He manipulated Riley into trusting him and told them to burn the tapes several times to stop Amanda.

Amanda the Adventurer 2[]

  • He constantly gets annoyed with Riley for deviating from his story when trying to cheer Amanda up when the latter is having a bad day, demanding Riley to listen to him, showing he thinks about what he wants more than what others want.
    • It’s also possible that he was trying to deliberately get Riley killed by the Colton Anomaly by getting them to tell a story Amanda clearly didn’t like, as he already saw Amanda prevent the latter from killing the former and it’s confirmed that Wooly has the same 4th wall awareness that Amanda does.
  • When Jordan/Chicken Scratch shows up, Wooly insults him by saying that no one wants him here.
  • He and Amanda assault Chicken Scratch after the latter jumps up to the screen. They then toss his body inside of a dumpster. If Riley chose not to help them with Chicken Scratch, they scold Riley for not doing so.
  • After Joanne reveals the truth about Kate to Riley, Wooly comes in his Shepherd form and brutally eats and mauls her alive in order to stop her from interfering with his plans. He then attempts to do the same to Riley, but the latter manages to escape.

Amanda the Adventurer 3[]

  • During the intro sequence, he tries to kill Riley in the sewers in his Shepherd form, only failing to do so after Riley finds a room and closes a reinforced door before he could get them.
  • Throughout the game, he would act very rude and disrespectful to Jordan, calling him names like weirdo, freak, and mutant.
  • He lashes out at Amanda and Chicken Scratch after the former forced him to be a stool for the latter, throwing candy over on the floor and making a bit of a mess of the store.
  • He continued to brainwash Amanda into forgetting her past, trying to make her get popcorn instead of going on the carousel ride which she remembers going on when she was in the real world.
  • He and Amanda forced and pressured Chicken Scratch to eat multiple kinds of food that he dislikes and doesn't want to eat. Due to how bad the food was, Chicken Scratch had to throw it away while they were distracted.
    • Furthermore, Wooly forces him to drink milk, something opossums (the animal Chicken Scratch is) are allergic to all because Wooly was jealous of him getting Amanda's attention.
      • It was very likely that Wooly was fully aware that opossums are lactose intolerant and was deliberately trying to hurt or kill Chicken Scratch, as he explicitly says to not eat anything from the dairy group because it’s “bad for you.”
  • During the beach tape, he once again continued to brainwash Amanda into forgetting her past, trying to rewrite her memories after she remembered going on the beach once when she was alive, and he even outright says "remembering things is overrated", and continued to stop her from remembering her past even after she told him to stop.
    • On a more minor note, he was also ungrateful for the sea shell that Chicken Scratch gifted him, with Wooly giving him a shallow “thanks” before tossing the shell away after Chicken Scratch left.
  • He reveals his true nature to Riley and tells them that he knows they have been trying to free and save Amanda, and that it isn't going to work and that they should stop helping her.
  • After Jordan tried to interfere with his plans, he destroyed the life support pods of all of the missing children, thus killing them all in order to be all alone with Amanda. This also killed Jordan right in front of Amanda, thus horrifying her, with Wooly showing no guilt about this and instead being cheerful and wanting to throw a party.
    • What's even worse is that destroying the life support pods kills the children in a slow and painful way as they would slowly suffocate to death while being unable to do anything about it.
  • After destroying the life support pods, he attempted to kill Riley once again as the Shepherd in order to stop them from freeing Amanda, however, they managed to escape using an elevator seconds before the Shepherd would eat them alive.
  • He refused to help Amanda set up a party even though it was his idea to throw a party in the first place. He would later ask her if she has ever thought about what he wants despite him never thinking about what she wants, once again demonstrating his hypocrisy.
  • He finally snaps and reaches his breaking point in the final tape, angrily lashing out at both Amanda and Riley, saying that he wants everything about the cartoon world to go back to the way it was before and screaming that Amanda and Riley should let things be, only to corrupt and disappear a second later.
  • In the Normal Ending, as a final act of spite, Wooly as the Shepherd, would attempt to kill Riley, Rebecca and the Colton Anomaly after Rebecca was freed by Riley. This led to the Colton Anomaly having to sacrifice itself to stop Wooly/The Shepherd for good. This ended up emotionally devastating Rebecca since The Colton Anomaly was a part of her.
  • In the true ending, he was defeated by the Colton Anomaly offscreen though he managed to tear off The Anomaly's arm out of spite.
    • Marcus' soul is deleted by Rebecca after she destroyed the tape. This fate is absolutely deserved and satisfying for all the terrible things he did.

Trivia[]

  • His version from the Pilot Episode doesn't qualify due to being an outright hero who was just a victim of Amanda and actually wanted to help the unnamed protagonist survive by telling them to burn the tapes. That version even counts as Pure Good.
    • Similarly, he is one of two Pure Evil characters with an official Pure Good counterpart, the other being Porky Minch.
  • Interestingly, sheeps are meant to be related to Christianity, as they are good animals that guide people to the light, something which Wooly is anything but good. While he did start out as one, it's thrown out the window by the third game, making him the embodiment of "Wolf in Sheep's clothing" & "Looks can be deceiving".
  • He is if not one of the rare cases of a Pure Evil, as when the first 2 Amanda The Adventurer games were made, he was initially put on the Heroes wiki page. However, after the 3rd game, this is no longer the case as all his actions were to prevent Amanda from remembering her past life and from manipulating Riley and Amanda while secretly being the mastermind.
  • Ironically, his arch-rival, Chicken Scratch, is ranked as Pure Good.
    • The two are also opposites, Chicken Scratch is a sheep in wolf's clothing, as he was initially portrayed as a villain, but was later revealed to be a hero, whereas Wooly is a wolf in sheep's clothing, as he was initially portrayed as a hero, but was later revealed to be a villain.
