“ | So you're the Ghost, are you? I remember you! On that farm, and that stupid little boy! Did he die? Hm? You know, it's an ugly business, doing one's duty. But just occasionally... it's a real pleasure. | „ |
~ Tavington taunting Benjamin Martin |
Colonel William Tavington is the main antagonist of the 2000 historical drama film The Patriot.
He is the cold-blooded and sadistic leader of a Royal British Regiment of soldiers who is charged with putting down the nascent American Revolution, led by Gabriel Martin. He serves as Benjamin Martin's archenemy.
He was portrayed by Jason Isaacs, who also played Colonel Mekum in Soldier, Satan in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, Dr. Heinreich Volmer in A Cure for Wellness, SkekSo in The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and Reza Zaydan in HITMAN.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- As the leader of the Dragoons, Tavington has led his men through countless battles and has killed hundreds of people out of arrogance and sadism, including those who surrender.
- He murders Thomas Martin, who is only a child, when he tries to save his brother Gabriel, and calls him a "stupid boy" when Benjamin mourns over him.
- He murders dozens of people, including Gabriel's wife, Anna, and her parents, by burning them alive in a church.
- He was insubordinate at best, often butting heads with General Cornwallis, even using one of his own remarks against him, truculently saying, "Quite impressive for a 'farmer with a pitchfork.' Wouldn't you say?"
- He burns down the Martin family's house.
- With the reluctant aid of Wilkins, a local Loyalist, Tavington has the homes of several militiamen burned and their families executed. Benjamin's family flees Charlotte's plantation as it is burned down to live in a Gullah settlement with formerly enslaved residents.
- He kills Gabriel Martin when he tries to avenge Anne’s death.
- He mocks Thomas' death and dishonors his memory right in front of his father, Benjamin.
- He leads a charge against Benjamin's army without orders, knowingly defying General Cornwallis again, simply because he wants to kill Benjamin, which winds up costing the British the battle.
- He fights dirty against Benjamin, abandoning the code of honor he claims to follow.
- Right before he attempts to kill Benjamin, he defiantly calls himself the "better man".
- Although his death was brutal, it was not played for sympathy as he deserved it for his actions.
- Despite following the British Government's orders, Tavington mainly does this just to get access to more power for his wishes. This is also helped by the fact he is incredibly sadistic and arrogant. He also has less resources than General Cornwallis and King George III, allowing him to stand out.
