William Rawlins is a major antagonist in The Punisher MAX. He is an extremely greedy and cowardly ex-CIA operative and by far the worst of Kathryn O'Brien's ex-husbands, described as "a true child of the company".
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Ten years ago, he kicked the gunner and his own wife (Kathryn O'Brien) out of his escape helicopter while smuggling stolen heroin out of Afghanistan. She survived the fall but was repeatedly raped by the Taliban as a result, which Rawlins shows no remorse for and even mocks in the present, calling her "the bukake queen of Kabul".
- Similarly, while Rawlins had an affair with Nicky Cavella, this was only to manipulate him rather than genuine love. Rawlins also blackmails Cavella for exposing his homosexuality and says he will kill him if he steps out of his bounds. Similarly, Rawlins openly mocks Cavella for being sexually molested by his aunt.
- Before the events of the series, he apparently had quite the reputation for starting and ending wars, turning presidents into prisoners, and doing business with the F.A.R.C., the Mujahs, the P.L.O., and several big cartels.
- He orchestrates the hijacking of a plane full of innocent people, intending to crash it into Moscow (and frame it on Saudi Arabia) to serve as a distraction while the Punisher extracts the last remaining sample of the Barbarossa virus. Unfortunately, the plane is shot down by missiles in order to protect the people below, killing everyone onboard.
- He works with General Zakharov in an attempt to take down the Punisher and O'Brien for good, during which he callously allows the Man of Stone to threaten the bombing of nearly 400 people in a mountain village called Hazar.
- He betrays Zakharov and his right-hand man, Dolly, leaving them both to die from their fatal wounds in the middle of the desert. During which, upon finding a photo of Dolly's wife and young son in his wallet, Rawlins threatens to find his address in Moscow and rape the son to death there. It may have been simply a sadistic taunt, but judging from Rawlins' past crimes (plus his intense sadism), it wouldn't be entirely out-of-character for him to actually keep his promise. Though he dies before readers find out either way.
- In the end, Rawlins is nothing but a disgusting coward with no honor or loyalty to anyone but himself, betraying pretty much everyone he's ever known, either to get ahead in life or to save his own skin. Even the ruthless General Zakharov outright describes Rawlins as a parasite who'd make the world bad forever so long as he could profit from it.
