“ | Remnant...such a fascinating substance. A substance, seemingly innocuous and mundane, may very well prove be so much more than anyone believed. If I am correct, then this Remnant may very well be the key to immortality. It may hold the secret to life after death itself. Those childish mascots in my fool of a partner's pizzeria chain...there is more to them than just artificial intelligence now, isn't there? More to them than just mechanical flesh and gears churning in their minds. Perhaps those little brats I slaughtered and stuffed in those metal bodies have become one with their new bodies, though how this occurred even I do not know. The animatronics that I have created, the machines I have created to kidnap and kill in my stead, they were created with this same Remnant. Perhaps the victims they claim will be able to live on through them as well? If that is so, then the possibilities are truly endless, and eternal life may be within my grasp. | „ |

“ | ...A TOOL? YOU WERE TOO USELESS TO SERVE EVEN THAT PURPOSE! YOU COULDN'T EVEN KILL A SINGLE VICTIM IN SIX DAYS, A LIVING CARCASS WEAKENED BY THE YEARS WITH BARELY THE STRENGTH TO MOVE! YOU ARE JUST AS MUCH OF A DISAPPOINTMENT AS YOUR WORTHLESS BROTHERS! I WAS THE ONE WHO GAVE YOU LIFE, YOU PATHETIC LITTLE INGRATE! AND I'LL BE MORE THAN HAPPY TO UNDO THAT MISTAKE! | „ |

William Afton, also known as the Purple Guy, is the main antagonist of Five Nights at Freddy's fanfiction Mike's New Ghostly Family.
Like his original and novel counterparts, he's the former co-owner of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza franchise alongside Henry Emily, and a serial child murderer who craves immortality and eventually became a hybrid known as Springtrap. His way to achieve immortality was through Remnant, a liquid metal used to stabilize the animatronics' structure that can trap a soul inside itself, subjecting the children's ghosts to their imprisonment in animatronic bodies. Though long dead, his influence still continues to haunt his ghostly victims and their new adoptive father, Mike Schmidt, whether indirectly or directly, even temporarily coming back from the dead as Nightmare Springtrap to take matters into his own hands. Because of this, he is considered Mike Schmidt and the Missing Kids' arch-nemesis.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Even before he committed his first murder, he deliberately tampered with Fredbear's Family Diner animatronics to be more dangerous, such as strengthening Fredbear's bite pressure, in hopes that people would get killed in the ensuing accidents.
- He built the Funtime animatronics, intentionally designed to lure away and murder children, with their first, and only, victim being his own daughter Elizabeth. Even though her death was an accident, he still felt no remorse over it, and when judged over it, he even went as far as to blame her over her own death.
- He was a horrible parent to his children, always neglecting their well-being and allowing them to die whenever it was convenient to him:
- He allowed his son Michael to constantly bully Evan over his fear of animatronics, doing nothing to help his youngest son. At one point, when Michael locked Evan away in the Parts & Service room of Fredbear's Family Diner, William didn't care about his predicament at all. As a result, Evan spent locked for half an hour in the room that terrified him until a lone worker would unlock the room and free him. He also forced Evan to celebrate his birthday at Fredbear's, fully aware that Evan feared the place and its animatronics, simply because it was convenient for him. When Michael and his friends shoved Evan's head into Fredbear's jaws, William did nothing to stop them despite the fact that it was his job as a security guard to prevent such cases from occuring. As a result, the Bite of '83 happened and Evan was hospitalized. In the hospital, William requested to have Evan's life support unplugged, thus killing him off despite the fact that Evan could have lived if his wounds were sufficiently treated. He presented his case as a mercy kill, but in truth, he wanted to keep Evan silent about Elizabeth's death and didn't want to raise a disabled child, even outright gloating that he'll no longer have to raise a "whiny brat" like him anymore.
- At one point, he sent Michael to retrieve Elizabeth from Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental, intentionally remaining silent about the fact that the resident animatronics would mistake him for William and try to kill him. As a result, Michael was killed by Elizabeth and the other Funtimes (who merged together to form Ennard), had his organs scooped and his body worn as a skinsuit until it rotted away, with Michael coming back to life as a zombie due to Remnant.
- Though he initially cared for Elizabeth, warning her to stay away from Circus Baby, he was still neglectful enough to allow her to sneak away to play with Baby, which resulted in her getting killed. Not only he didn't mourn her death, but, when he noticed Circus Baby's odd behavior and realized that Elizabeth possessed the animatronic, he left her to rot alone in CBEAR, with her only company being other Funtime animatronics whose inhuman psychology completely alienated her. And when he met her again, he simply used her as a tool to achieve his murderous goals.
- After discovering Elizabeth's fate, he decided to try and find out how a soul could persist after death and discover the secrets of immortality, purely so that he'd be able to do anything he wants without the fear of consequences.
- In his pursuit of immortality, he decided to replicate Elizabeth's fate with the other children. He murders Charlie, the only daughter of his friend and business partner Henry Emily, and then kills five more children on Cassidy's birthday while wearing a Spring Bonnie suit, luring them away one-by-one by exploiting their naivety (such as promising to reunite Susie with her deceased dog), stuffing their corpses inside the animatronics to see whether they'll be able to possess them. When they did, he knew his experiment was a success and it was all tied to Remnant, leading to him starting his experiments on the metal.
- To make matters worse, because they never saw his face since he wore the Spring Bonnie suit (or he was outside in the dark and stormy night, in Charlie's case), the only trait of him the children remembered was that he wore a purple security guard uniform, which made them think every single nightguard was him, leading to them murdering the many innocent nightguards, thus subsequently making him indirectly responsible for all of their crimes against the murdered nightguards as well.
- Discovering Remnant's properties, he continued using it on all future Funtime animatronics made, knowingly seeking to trap their victims' souls in fates worse than death, all to study the metal's effects.
- When he was unable to figure out how to achieve immortality through Remnant, he went to the 90's Freddy Fazbear's Pizza to dismantle the animatronics to find out the hypothetical "missing key" to immortality's secrets, inadvertedly temporarily releasing the ghosts who tricked him into putting on a Spring Bonnie suit that malfunctioned and killed him for the first time.
- About 30 years after his death, he was able to take control of his animatronic body and was completely consumed by his bloodlust. When he was made to be the main attraction of Fazbear's Fright, he intended to use it to murder the first person he'd come across, said person ending up being his own zombified son Michael who was able to continuously distract him with the audio lures triggering Spring Bonnie's programming and then burning down the attraction.
- After surviving the burning of Fazbear's Fright, he went to CBEAR and met Elizabeth again, ejected from Ennard. Exploiting her fragile mental state, which was made even more fragile by her despair and loneliness combined with Circus Baby's malicious programming, he corrupted her into following his murderous footsteps under the guise of trying to "start a new Afton era", feigning remorse over abandoning her and then manipulating her into bringing MCI victims' souls together. His manipulation severely affected her mental state for a very long time, filling her with extreme self-loathing even after her soul was freed of Circus Baby's malicious programming.
- For his sins, he was condemned to eternal suffering in Hell to be tortured by the Nightmares, a clan of demons who took forms of demonic Fazbear's animatronics. Learning that his murder victims managed to rediscover happiness on Earth after being adopted by Mike Schmidt, he decided to make a one-time wager with Nightmare to ruin the ghosts' happy ending out of spite while he'll enjoy 1000 years free of torture. In his wager, he made a bet that the family would break apart if their dark secrets would be revealed to each other. This indirectly made him responsible for Nightmare's psychological abuse he inflicted on the ghost children.
- To make matters worse, despite the fact that his own daughter Elizabeth (now known as Liz Schmidt) was one of the ghost children Mike adopted, he still sent Nightmare to break apart her new family without any remorse, not caring about her feelings whatsoever, even when Nightmare started psychologically abusing her as well.
- When his attempt to break the Schmidt family apart failed, he ended up developing a thirst of revenge against Mike Schmidt, not only for giving Nightmare suggestions on how to worsen his tortures, but also for giving the ghosts a happy ending. When his thoughts were overheard by Vucarik, a demon lord with the desire to supplant Lucifer as leader of Hell, the demon offered William an opportunity to escape to Earth and claim his revenge against Mike, which the murderer immediately accepted. Together, they grievously injured the younger Nightmares and stole their essences, with Vucarik bestowing them upon Afton, turning him into Nightmare Springtrap before sending him to the Earth.
- Returning to the mortal world as Nightmare Springtrap, he immediately rushed towards the Schmidts' household, intending to claim his revenge against Mike, planning to either permanently mutilate his body and leave the children to spend the rest of his days taking care of a broken shell of a man that was their father or directly possess him and attack his soul directly, which would leave him comatose for months, years or even decades, with a strong chance of making him forget about the ghosts if the injuries would be strong enough.
- When ambushed by the ghost children, he swiftly destroyed their Rockstar animatronic bodies and intended to attack them even after their ghostly bodies became exposed, afterwards preparing to destroy Security Puppet to ensure that Charlie won't be able to suppress his demonic powers, which would've resulted in his hellfire burning the Schmidts' house to the ground.
- When Liz Schmidt (a.k.a. former Elizabeth Afton) came to Charlie's defense, William tried to coax her into joining his side, but when she rejected him in favor of Mike, he decried her as useless and claims that she's as much of a disappointment as her brothers were before attacking her. During the battle, he ends up inflicting severe injuries on her ghostly body all while insulting and badmouthing her as useless and pathetic in an attempt to break her psyche.
- After the ghost of Michael Afton arrived to aid Liz, he proceeds to insult his daughter once more by claiming that he should've corrupted Michael into following his footsteps, referring to Liz as an "incompetent little b**ch". Later, when Shadow Freddy, ghostly form of Evan Afton, joins Michael, William tries to coax him into joining his side, only to be rejected. As Shadow Freddy proceeded to reveal all atrocities William Afton has committed against him, the murderer either deflected the blame or made weak and pathetic excuses. However, when he learned that Shadow Freddy and Michael cooperated to put an end to his evil and started mocking him, William attacked them in rage, inflicting severe injuries on Shadow Freddy that he was able to handle only due to his immense durability. During the battle, he inflicted grievous wounds on Liz, forcing Mike Schmidt to reveal himself just to divert his attention from her.
- When he rushed up to Mike Schmidt's bedroom, he immediately possessed him to attack his soul directly, resulting in them both fighting inside Mike's mindscape. Throughout the battle, William Afton tried to use any dirty trick available, while also hypocritically accusing Mike of fighting dishonorably.
- To turn the tide of battle in Mike's mind into his favor, he summoned an army of demons into his mind so that they would be able to defeat and torture his soul, only for Mike to respond by siccing an army of manifestations of his own inner darkness. Though William tried to keep his army alive, it was only for pragmatic purposes, as he wanted them to torture Mike, but when Mike prepares to destroy his entire army in one spell, William cowardly abandoned them to their fate while hiding behind one of arena's columns to avoid the infernal blast.
- After learning that his whole battle was hopeless and seeing how powerful Mike is inside his mind, he tries to cowardly escape and go back to Hell, only for Mike to keep him imprisoned inside his mind before beginning to gruesomely torture Afton. When tortured, Afton initially attempts to hide his fear and resist in every way possible, but when that fails, he begins to cowardly beg Nightmare to take him back to Hell (only to be rejected) and apologize to Mike just so that Schmidt would stop torturing him, without any genuine regret put into the "apology".
- His cruelty and depravity managed to evoke disgust even from Nightmare and his clan, his demonic tormentors in Hell, as they genuinely understand the value of family and were repulsed by the way William Afton treated his own children as tools to be used and discarded.
- He was responsible for Glitchtraps' actions as they're parts of his soul.
- While some of his tortures in Hell are played for black comedy, such as him being forced to listen to "Friday" by Rebecca Black on the loop or being beaten to death by Chica with a pot in the "Ultimate Custom Night" torture, they do not detract from his heinousness, as the comedic tortures make only sporadic appearances and are overshadowed by more disturbing ones, and even the most comical of tortures still have some disturbing factors (such as the fact that his forced listening to "Friday" had headphones impaled and burned into his head with spikes and lava, while Chica beating him to death with a pot had him suffer from realistic injuries instead of cartoony slapstick).
- Though it was revealed that he had a Freudian Excuse in the form of growing up with an abusive father, while it explains his downfall into villainy, it still does not justify the atrocities he committed, given that he learned nothing from his past, becoming an abusive father as well, and went as far as to translate the pain to innocent people and subject them to fates even worse than death, even though they had nothing to do with his tragedies.
- To reinforce the fact that William Afton's tragedies do not hold up at all, Mike Schmidt, the main protagonist, also suffered from growing up with an abusive father, but he not only didn't become evil, but was able to get a lot of positive characteristics that define him today. If William Afton was truly a good person at heart, then he would've also been able to rise above his past, but instead he mislearned everything his past would've taught him and chose to fully embrace his darkness, eventually becoming an even worse monster than his father was.
- To further drive home the fact that Afton Past cannot be used to justify his actions, his wife, Clara Afton, visited Mike and the Ghosts and acknowledged that while she was alive, William didn't acted anywhere nearly as sociopathic as he did later on his life, and even managed to win her heart by relating his own past of being an abusive victim to her. However, that does not absolve or negates any of his horrible actions, as Afton still ended up commiting several atrocities later in life and death he is completly unrepentant. It is also brought up in and out of Universe that it is possible, if not highly likely, that Afton was only faking his gentler side to manipulate Clara. And regardless of anything else, it was made clear that William Afton ultimatelly did had a choice of having a normal family live, but he ultimatelly rejected all of that for his nefarious purporses, highlinghting the fact he had solid moral agency over all his ordeal.
Trivia[]
- Despite adapting from the video games, William is more similar to his graphic novel counterpart.
- It is unknown if his Glitchtrap version can be Pure Evil, sense while he is a fragment of his soul, he lacks the bloodlust that made William so deranged.
- In chapter 189 of the Fanfic, his Status as Pure Evil is actually discussed and acknowledged by both Charlie and Mike, where after discussing the trope and all the villains of the francise and the fic itself (The Animatronics/Ghost Children, Nightmare and William Afton) they both agreed that not only William fits all the criteria of the Trope, In-universe it is made even worse by the fact that he is a real person on their universe, as well as the fact that Mike comments that the only "positive" quality he could find in William is how sturbborn he is on his goals, but that if anything only makes him an even vilier person than otherwise.
