~ William Afton to Rory. |
William Afton, also known as the Purple Guy or Springtrap, is the main antagonist of the ScottGames era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
He is the father of Michael Afton, Elizabeth Afton, and the Crying Child, the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment alongside his best friend Henry Emily, and the man who killed numerous children that would go on to possess the animatronics. He later became an undead animatronic himself after getting his body fused with one of his creations.
He is voiced by PJ Heywood, who also voiced Nur-Ab-Sal in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?
- He is the main individual both directly and indirectly responsible for all the things happening in the franchise, with just about everyone despising him, and has no redeeming qualities or even a clear motive for his actions other than immortality seeking, a possible tragic past, or just because he's always been a bloodthirsty psychopath who derives pleasure and satisfaction from other peoples' pain and suffering.
- On the "possible tragic past" part: While it was implied that he had a reason for being a serial killer, as Henry's wording strongly implies he unwillingly shaped him into a monster and thus might have not started out as one, it isn’t fully confirmed since it was never stated what kind of past he had, nor would it justify any of his crimes and sheer sadism.
- Additionally, it's possible that Henry actually meant that he unknowingly helped Afton to further his twisted goals, which led to him becoming the monster he is today.
- He murdered around eleven children, and probably even more than that, at numerous Freddy Fazbear's Pizza locations throughout the 1980s without remorse, causing them to possess both the original and Toy animatronics. One of them was his best friend and business partner's daughter, Charlotte Emily, who became the Puppet.
- He was perfectly willing to use personal lives for his own gain, lying to a girl named Susie that her dead dog is actually alive just to lure her into getting killed.
- It's possible he was even the killer of Susie's dog, although it could have been by accident.
- Depending on what one believes about the Midnight Motorist minigame, he was either abusive to one of his own children or lured a child out of his abusive home just so he could experiment on or kill him.
- His actions have led to countless night guards being hunted and/or killed by the animatronics due to them mistaking the night guards for William, including his own son Michael. One of these night guards was the Phone Guy, who was killed by one of them during his last week.
- There are several indications that he was a abusive father to his children even before his child-killing crusade:
- He directly neglected his youngest son and the fact that he was being bullied by his older brother Michael, which makes him indirectly responsible for his death/the Bite of '83. He also forced him to have his birthday at Fredbear's Family Diner, despite the boy's obvious fear of the place.
- Assuming he was the Fredbear Plush at some point, then he knew full well how bad his youngest son was being bullied and didn't do anything to stop it whatsoever, only giving him false hope that 'tomorrow is another day'. He also possibly manipulated and gaslight his son, telling him that Michael hates him, and that the animatronics he is afraid of will do something bad to him if he gets caught by them.
- Assuming he is the Orange Guy from Midnight Motorist, then he's both a physically and verbally abusive father, banging on his son's door, shouting at him for not listening to him, and ultimately threatening him when he discovers that he has ran off.
- He directly neglected his youngest son and the fact that he was being bullied by his older brother Michael, which makes him indirectly responsible for his death/the Bite of '83. He also forced him to have his birthday at Fredbear's Family Diner, despite the boy's obvious fear of the place.
- He built an underground chamber to kidnap and torture kids in (which most likely included Michael) as part of an experiment, and designed automated puppets called the Nightmare animatronics that appear 'alive' when his victims are exposed to hallucinogenic gas. At least one of his victims, Rory, was trapped there for ten years and left with barely any food, essentially clinging to life and likely on the brink of starvation.
- He constructed the Funtime animatronics and designed them specifically to kill children, one of the victims being his own daughter Elizabeth (although her death was, as far as we know, purely accidental).
- It's also heavily implied that he put the missing children's remnant from their suits into the Funtime animatronics, making him responsible for the events of Sister Location and their actions as Molten Freddy in Pizzeria Simulator until their destruction in the latter game.
- While it looks like Elizabeth's death was accidental, it's also possible he used reverse psychology to get her killed as, according to Elizabeth, he claimed that he made Baby "just for her" and watched her play with other children, but didn't allow her to do it, tricking her into sneaking off to play with Baby when he wasn't looking. That said, this was never confirmed.
- He used electric shocks to torture Circus Baby, Ballora, Funtime Foxy, and possibly Funtime Freddy into obedience in an underground location for his experiments. This would lead to the many injuries and deaths of workers at the facility.
- Additionally, William was fully aware that Baby was possessed by Elizabeth, yet he didn't stop his employees from shocking her and even ordered them to do so.
- He destroyed the original four animatronics with the presumed help of Shadow Freddy.
- After putting on the Spring Bonnie suit, he laughed at the souls for no reason other than to mock them.
- Although his death in the Spring Bonnie suit was slow, brutal, and painful, it is fully deserved and not playing for sympathy. Not to mention he was laughing at the souls mere seconds ago as mentioned right above.
- Prior to his death, he sent his son, Michael Afton, to the underground Circus Baby's Entertainment and Rental to release his sister, knowing there is a chance he will die. While Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator would reveal he presumably didn't intend for Ennard's creation, he has no remorse for it and outright calls it "fascinating".
- After becoming Springtrap, he tried to kill the security guard of Fazbear's Fright (who is heavily implied to be Michael) for no reason other than pure bloodlust.
- It's implied that he was responsible for deterring the Fazbear's Fright guard with the Phantom animatronics by creating them.
- Additionally, it's possible that he murdered the Phone Dude the night he was brought to Fazbear's Fright, which would explain why we never hear from again later during the week.
- He attempted to continue his killing spree in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place. It's worth noting that Afton was fully aware of the place being a trap, but went there anyways as he couldn't pass up the opportunity of killing a few more kids.
- He tried to kill his own son, Michael, in Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place.
- Although he was tortured in his nightmares by Golden Freddy, it is not played for sympathy, and he deserved it for his atrocious nature and horrific crimes.
- His actions have lead a massive impact in the series. An animatronic endoskeleton known as the Mimic created by a Fazbear Entertainment engineer in the 80's saw Afton's murders and became obsessed with replicating him, eventually becoming a digital virus known as Glitchtrap after being scanned into a VR video game. As a result, dozens of people would be endangered (possibly even killed) by the Fazbear Funtime Service animatronics, Vanessa would be painfully brainwashed into becoming Vanny and go on a killing spree in Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex like Afton did in the 80's, claiming nine victims, and Gregory would be forced to betray and presumably kill his friend Cassie to prevent the Mimic from hurting him, among others.
Trivia
- Only the original William Afton from the mainline games qualifies as Pure Evil, while Springtrap and Purpleguy [sic] from FNAF World and the FFS Springtrap animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery don't, the former two due to their adaptational heroism and the latter due to being nothing more than replicas of William whose actions amount to standard villainy.
- Every official version of William is Pure Evil.
- A factor that could possibly affect Afton's Pure Evil status is his relationship his daughter, Elizabeth. Sister Location implies he cared about her since he wanted her to not go near Baby, who was made to kill kids, and apparently sent Michael to save her after she died. However, it is possible that he didn't do this out of genuine love for her, but so she can grow up to be a serial killer like him, or to avoid having to go through any legal troubles. Besides, he was aware of her possession of Baby, yet didn't stop his employees from shocking her and even ordered them to do so.
- One of Baby's lines in Ultimate Custom Night, "I guess you forget about me", also implies that William may have forgotten about Elizabeth and only saw her as Baby after her death. However, this line is debatable, as UCN is nothing more than William's nightmare.
- Additionally, in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, it is revealed that Baby wanted to kill children so her father can be proud of her, implying that William was neglectful towards her, and didn't give her enough love and attention when she was alive. It might also explain why William unknowingly allowed Elizabeth to run and see Circus Baby.
- Considering that Drowning Girl from Tales from the Pizzaplex story Drowning is theorized to be Cassady, it highly possible that Afton was the intruder, that broke up in her house and, likely, killed her parents, most likely to kidnap her. If this would ever be confirmed, it will make him worse.
- With 16 Pure Evil incarnations, William Afton has the third highest number of versions based on him on this wiki, overshadowed only by the Joker by 3 and Satan by 8.
