William Afton, also known as the Purple Guy or Springtrap, is the main antagonist of the ScottGames era and the overarching antagonist of the SteelWool era of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise.
He is the father of Michael Afton, Elizabeth Afton, and the Crying Child, the co-founder of Fazbear Entertainment alongside his best friend Henry Emily, and the man who killed numerous children that would go on to possess the animatronics. He later became an undead animatronic himself after getting his body fused with one of his creations.
He is voiced by PJ Heywood, who also voiced Nur-Ab-Sal in Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?
In General/Background
- William Afton is overall a heartless serial killer and the main individual responsible for all the tragedies and events that transpired in the series. Almost everyone is disgusted by him and loathes him for his actions and he proves himself to be an irredeemable, sadistic, sociopathic and arrogant man to the very core, even happily smiling when he committed his crimes.
- Although many theorize he had a tragic past and could have been driven insane by the loss of his family, these claims are baseless and the story makes it clear he committed his crimes out of sheer bloodlust and perhaps even a selfish goal for immortality.
- Besides as far as we can see he was living the dream life, being a successful, wealthy entrepreneur with a nice family, a fancy house and a stylish car. This shows that he truly has no excuse for his crimes.
- Secret of the Mimic reveals that he was an amoral businessman who was willing to sabotage an entire company and sent multiple workers on a suicide mission to retrieve the M.I.M.I.C blueprints all for his selfish gain, which shows that he was a monster even before he started killing children. It's even implied he was responsible for the corruption and shady business practices Fazbear Entertainment was infamous for having.
- Although he is quite mysterious and vague, and only having a handful of voice lines and screen time, he is clearly characterized as that of a sadistic monster.
- Despite having three children he shows little to no care for them.
- He regarded his eldest son Michael as a pawn and sent him on a suicide mission to Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental which put his life in danger multiple times. This resulted in the animatronics killing him and his transformation into a hollow living corpse, leaving him in a fate worse than death. When he met Michael again decades later he outright tried to murder him when he found out he was against his plans.
- It's also entirely possible he was responsible for turning him in to the bully he was in FNaF 4, likely because he emotionally and psychologically abused him to the point Michael almost became just as bad as his father by trying to bully and abuse his little brother until he learned the error of his ways after causing his brother's death.
- Although he was implied to have some fondness for his daughter Elizabeth, making Circus Baby “just for her”, instructing her to stay away from the animatronic as he made it to kill children and asking Michael to save her from the Rental Facility it seems this connection was purely superficial and even manipulative. He took no precautions to actually protect Elizabeth from Baby and later covered her death up as a gas leak to save face. He also abandoned her in the rental facility where she was tortured and mistreated for years until Afton finally decided to get Michael to save her. He also showed no explicit remorse for her death even though it was his own fault.
- It's worth to note that most of these implications of William loving his daughter is mostly Elizabeth/Baby herself mentioning it and not William, as he has little to no dialogue of him ever mentioning he even loves her, other than one dialogue In FFPS of him being "fascinated" of what her and the other animatronics became over the years.
- He neglected and quite possibly physically abused his youngest son. Telling him never to lock his door, chasing after him when he escapes his abuse, neglecting his emotional needs and turmoil as well his general well being. It’s also implied he was the voice behind the Fredbear plush and he gaslighted and manipulated his own son.
- He regarded his eldest son Michael as a pawn and sent him on a suicide mission to Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental which put his life in danger multiple times. This resulted in the animatronics killing him and his transformation into a hollow living corpse, leaving him in a fate worse than death. - It’s heavily implied he coerced and threatened his partner, Henry Emily into following him and his corrupt business practices considering Henry claims that William was a “monster that he unwillingly helped to create”.
- On the minigame Midnight Motorist, where he is the Orange Guy, he is seen drunk driving, and screaming to one of his son to open the door of his room, and when he realizes he ran away, he says that he "will be sorry when he comes back".
Five Nights at Freddy’s series
- He, caused the corporate sabotage of Murray's Costume Manor by bribing it's employees to leak information and changing the project commissions unnecessarily (which made it more expensive to finish them). This caused MCM to go bankrupt and close it's doors permanently. He even tried to gaslight it's owner Edwin Murray into selling out the company to Fazbear Entertainment.
- Although he did offer to make Edwin one of their lead engineers and keep his family home intact it was likely for pragmatic reasons to get his cooperation and because he figured his skills could be useful.
- He sent several recovery teams into Murray's Costume Manor despite him and the other higher-ups at Fazbear Entertainment knowing about the murderously hostile Mimic endoskeleton lurking within, making him indirectly responsible for the deaths of every team sent into the Manor, including Arnold.
- He betrayed Henry by murdering his daughter Charlotte in cold blood.
- This led to Charlie possessing the Puppet and becoming a somewhat violent extremist willing to do whatever it takes to kill Afton and protect others from him even if it meant murder.
- After killing Charlie, he recklessly drove home at dangerous speeds and busted into his house intent on abusing one of his children. It’s also likely he was an alcoholic as he got banned from an establishment called Jr’s which was possibly a bar.
- Although he did help one of his employees put on the Spring Bonnie suit safely so they could perform it was most likely for pragmatic reasons to avoid incident and to keep up appearances as a good boss.
- Since he neglected and ignored his youngest son’s bullying at the hands of Michael, he is indirectly responsible for the Bite of 83 which caused the death of said son.
- At some point he opened his own restaurant called Circus Baby’s Pizza World where he designed the animatronics to do his dirty work by capturing and murdering children. The first of these victims ended up being his own daughter albeit accidentally.
- While he did act affable to a board member about interviewing Circus Baby's functions, he was clearly doing this to hide the fact he intentionally made the robots to be homicidal when the board member started getting suspicious when looking at their design choices to make him believe his robots were truly harmless.
- Additionally Circus Baby in particular was designed with a spiked metal claw made to drag children in her chest cavity. Meaning Afton wanted her to kill children as painfully as possible.
- He even tortured these animatronics, giving them electric shocks and resulting in the death of multiple technicians, showing that he doesn't even care for his own creations.
- He used the Spring Bonnie suit and pretended to be a benevolent mascot to lure away and remorselessly murder five innocent children at Freddy’s.
- What’s worse, the first of these victims was a little girl named Susie whom he emotionally manipulated into thinking her beloved dog was still alive to lure her to her death.
- His actions caused the spirits of the children to haunt the animatronics which led to them being filled with so much pain and hatred they turned on and killed any adults they found in the pizzeria after hours. This makes Afton indirectly responsible for everyone the animatronics hunted down and killed, including Ralph who died at their hands shortly before his retirement.
- In 1987, when he learned of the opening of the new and improved Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza he disguised himself as a security guard to gain access to the building to murder yet another five children. These children were implied to eventually possess the Toy animatronics.
- Additionally William desecrated their corpses by scattering their bodies all over the restaurant.
- When Freddy and the Puppet tried to save the kids he murdered, Afton mocked them for their failure and told them tauntingly “You Can’t”.
- If one of the toy animatronics (possibly Mangle) is the culprit of the Bite of '87 where someone got their frontal lobe bitten off. Afton would be indirectly responsible for this incident for causing them to be possessed in the first place.
- He ordered Michael to go to Circus Baby’s Entertainment and Rental to free his sister which resulted in his death and reanimation as the Funtime Animatronics mistook him for his father. It’s highly possible William knew this would happen and he wanted Michael to be a scapegoat for his actions.
- One by one with the help of Shadow Freddy he lured the animatronics to the safe room and violently dismantled them.
- When he puts on the Spring Bonnie suit to hide himself from his victims he spitefully and maniacally laughs at the spirits just to mock them.
- Although he dies a slow, agonizing and painful death in the Spring Bonnie suit it was fitting karmic justice for his crimes and he brought it on himself.
- Thirty years later when he became Springtrap he tried to murder the Fazbear's Fright night guard out of pure bloodlust rather than simply leaving the building.
- While one could argue that he has a sense of honor by not killing them when it reaches 6:00 AM similar to what Freddy and the Puppet do, this was done only because he was still getting used to his new body as Springtrap as shown by his heavy motions and inability to run in FNaF 3, and the fact that he was imprisoned in the same room for thirty years made it difficult for him to move right away, and as mentioned above, while he could’ve left the building, he chose to stay out of pure sadism, so while he let the guard survive, it wasn’t out of a moral code; it was from the thrill of having the opportunity to end someone’s life as hunter and prey.
- This consistently gets worse throughout the next couple of days, with the Phantom Animatronics nearly bringing them to insanity and having the place burned as a result. It’s also entirely possible that he killed the Phone Dude present, given how he is never heard from again after encountering Springtrap.
- It’s also implied that the reason he was fooled by the audio lures in the building was because they were that of a little boy. This shows just how obsessed he is with murdering children.
- When he hears of a new Freddy’s location opening, he takes this as an opportunity to try and murder more children for old times sake. It’s worth noting Afton suspected it was a trap but he couldn’t resist the urge to satiate his bloodlust even at the cost of his own life.
- His act of murdering Charlie and the five children had detrimental effects on his old friend Henry. He became so guilt ridden and remorseful he couldn’t sleep at night and heavily contemplated suicide.
- For four whole days he, along with Lefty, Molten Freddy and Scrap Baby roamed the underground catacombs in the pizzeria to murder Michael.
- Although he was fascinated of what the other animatronics have evolved over the years, he was only interested of what they became as killers rather than out of care or love for them.
- As a testament to how evil William was, he is the only person in the fire Henry didn’t hope would find peace. Instead he outright told him that all that awaits him is the darkest pit of Hell.
- Although he is tortured in his nightmares by Golden Freddy for the rest of eternity by being brutally killed by fifty different animatronics over and over this is not played for sympathy in the slightest, as William deserved it for his unbelievably atrocious nature and unspeakably horrific crimes.
- His actions ultimately led to many of the terrible events happening in the Steel wool era:
- A Computer program called the Mimic to become obsessed with replicating his crimes to the point he created a digital clone like virus of the killer called Glitchtrap, leading to him brainwashing a woman named Vanessa and an unknown child named Gregory into becoming his pawns to continue Afton's dark legacy at the newly built Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex by causing more murders (including 9 children being killed by Vanny).
- Him having both Gregory and Vanny turn the place's futuristic Glamrock Animatronics into homicidal and cruel by influencing them with the virus into killing any child left behind at the complex mall (to which only one or two of them were only able to be freed from it due to their child companions rebooting them into safe mode), leading to them getting destroyed and later abandon after the plex got destroyed in an earthquake after Gregory and Vannessa redeemed themselves.
- Being responsible for the death of the HW2 protagonist in the hands of Glitchtrap by having attacked by S.T.A.F.F bots and putting his consciousness into one called "Mask Bot" until Glitchtrap met his end in the hands of his former pawn Vanny.
- The Mimic tricking Gregory's friend, Cassie, into coming to the now ruin pizzaplex on a suicidal mission to set it free underneath Roxy Raceway in the sinkhole, thus being also responsible for Cassie's and Roxanne's presumed demise in the hands of the Mimic.
Trivia
- Only the original William Afton from the mainline games qualifies as Pure Evil, while Springtrap and Purpleguy [sic] from FNAF World and the FFS Springtrap animatronics from Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery don't, the former two due to their adaptational heroism and the latter due to being nothing more than replicas of William whose actions amount to standard villainy.
- So far, every official version of William Afton is Pure Evil.
- A factor that could possibly affect Afton's Pure Evil status is his relationship his daughter, Elizabeth. Sister Location implies he cared about her since he wanted her to not go near Baby, who was made to kill kids, and apparently sent Michael to save her after she died. However, it is possible that he didn't do this out of genuine love for her, but so she can grow up to be a serial killer like him, or to avoid having to go through any legal troubles. Besides, he was aware of her possession of Baby, yet didn't stop his employees from shocking her and even ordered them to do so.
- One of Baby's lines in Ultimate Custom Night, "I guess you forget about me", also implies that William may have forgotten about Elizabeth and only saw her as Baby after her death. However, this line is debatable, as UCN is nothing more than William's nightmare.
- Additionally, in Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, it is revealed that Baby wanted to kill children so her father can be proud of her, implying that William was neglectful towards her, and didn't give her enough love and attention when she was alive. It might also explain why William unknowingly allowed Elizabeth to run and see Circus Baby.
- With 19 Pure Evil incarnations, William Afton has the highest number of versions based on him on this wiki.
