Wake up, Rogers! This ain't about slavery. It's about money! The South will collapse without slave labor. The North wants the South's resources. A handful of rich folks call the shots, and a whole load of poor folks end up worm food. The only sane course for us is to grab what spoils we can. That's the reality of war, corporal. Has been since they fought with stones and spears!
~ Colonel Barnes justifying the Sacking of Osceola.

Colonel Buck "Bucky" Barnes, also known as the White Skull, is the main antagonist of What If...Captain America Fought in the Civil War?

A Union Army officer from the American Civil War, he and his soldiers, the Redlegs Regiment, are nothing more than war criminals, murdering innocent civilians and other people of different race. His interference in a ceremony turns him into a skull-faced terrorist.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He led the Sacking of Osceola against General Ewing's direct order to first evacuate the premises without any casualties, torching the whole town while also killing every man, woman and child in sight, including the slaves (thus making his earlier preaching about freedom towards his men completely hypocritical). It's also heavily implied that Barnes was even planning to do this with the rest of Jackson County.
    • When another soldier finds gold in one of the buildings, Barnes greedily forces him to hand it over, threatening to kill him with his sword otherwise.
    • In a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment during all of this, a woman in a white dress got sexually assaulted by one of the soldiers. Therefore, the Sacking of Osceola was for all intents and purposes a "rape, pillage and burn" spree.
  • He ordered Cpl. Stephen Rogers to shoot and kill three children in Osceola, and then attempted to murder Rogers for insubordination when he sent said children away on horseback for their own safety (at the expense of his own) instead.
  • When a military base of coloreds trying to keep a wounded Rogers hidden caused his karmic transformation into the White Skull, Barnes ordered his men to kill them all as punishment, even personally killing Sam Wilson with just two shots to the gut.
  • After the Civil War, White Skull broke out of jail and reformed the Ku Klux Klan into a new, deadlier hate group that is still committing hate crimes on American soil decades later, and was just recently reported trying to bomb the Lincoln Memorial.
  • Overall, he's a far cry from the mainstream Bucky Barnes, being a psychopathic hate terrorist far more akin to the Red Skull than a tragic hero pure of heart.
