Warren T. Rat (real name Warren T. Cat) is the main antagonist of Don Bluth's 1986 animated film An American Tail.
He is a cat in rat's clothing, Fievel's first archenemy, and the leader of the Mott Street Maulers, a gang of dangerous cats who terrorize the mice of New York City. T. Rat is accompanied nearly all the time by his incompetent accountant Digit, a small British cockroach.
He was voiced by the late John Finnegan.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- While he initially appears to be nothing more than a sleazy con artist, he is later revealed to be the leader of the cats of New York City and the cause of the mice's misery.
- Instead of simply eating the mice like other cats in the setting, he oppresses them and cons them out of their money for greed and sadistic pleasure, made worse by him knowing the mice are sapient. He also hates losing even the smallest amount of money.
- He lies to Fievel about taking him to his family, only to sell him into a sweatshop to make 50 cents back.
- It's implied he may have done this to at least some of the other children who work there too, as Digit states that he and Warren regularly get money from Moe, the sweatshop's owner, which is furthered by his next line "Moe could always use an extra kid at 50 cents a day". This, in of itself, is essentially the equivalent of selling children into slave labor.
- He cons the downtrodden mice of New York City to pay for protection that he never provides, while secretly having his henchmen pick off a mouse, even kids, every once in a while to keep them afraid and under his control. Because of this, he is disliked by many of the mice.
- While Warren only has roughly 10 minutes of screen time and much of his villainy is off screen apart from one cat attack and the evil deeds listed below, the effects are still shown onscreen, as a funeral is shown for one of the mice who was killed in the attack.
- He constantly threatens to fire or kill his assistant Digit for complaining, and is never shown treating his henchmen kindly, which further shows he only cares about himself.
- He captures Fievel and later fires Tiger for helping Fievel escape, but Tiger expresses happiness because he never liked Warren or his music, the latter of which even Digit disliked, as he says "I don't know which is worse, the music or the Shakespeare", though Warren blamed his bad violin playing on his false nose.
- He tells the mice to give them Fievel and all their money in exchange for the cats leaving them alone, when in actuality, he planned on having his henchmen attack the mice immediately afterwards.
- When the mice stand up to him once his secret and deceit is revealed, he sets fire to the pier to kill all the mice out of spite, in response to Gussie Mausheimer telling him he's washed up and will never get another cent from any mouse anywhere, but he and his henchmen are scared off by the Giant Mouse of Minsk.
- Just before he and his henchmen are shipped to Hong Kong, he swears revenge on all the mice and declares his hatred of them.
- While he gets shipped off to China at the end with his henchmen, Warren doesn't see his defeat as a punishment, given that there are also mice in Hong Kong, implying that he will just restart his operations there. This is especially evident considering his last line in the movie (on the DVD and Blu-Ray release, as the line was absent from the theatrical and VHS versions) is him asking how to say "trust me" in Chinese.
- While he has some comedic moments, his actions are played seriously.
