~ Warren Mears to Dark Willow. |
Warren Mears is a major antagonist in the Buffyverse. He appears in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a minor antagonist in season 5, the main antagonist of season 6, an unseen but important antagonist in season 7 and a major antagonist in the season 8 comics.
He is a self-proclaimed mad scientist, and the leader of the Trio, a group of hapless supervillains who try (and repeatedly fail) to destroy the Scooby Gang. Originally something of a comic relief character, he becomes a much darker presence later in the series, when he is portrayed as a psychopath with a savage hatred of women. He is the archenemy of both versions of Willow Rosenberg.
He was portrayed by Adam Busch.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Abandoned his robot girlfriend April to run out of batteries simply because he got bored of her and found a new girlfriend.
- This is made worse by the fact that he programmed April to be hurt anytime he doesn't pay attention to her.
- Gave a m'fashnik demon Buffy's adress so he could kill her despite neither Andrew or Jonathan wanting her to be murdered.
- Tried to make his ex-girlfriend Katrina into his sex slave by using a magical artifact.
- When Katrina broke out of the artifact's spell and tried to leave, he killed her by hitting the back of her head with a broken bottle. While he didn't intend to kill her, he still shows no remorse, proving he subverted his love for her.
- Summoned several demons to run amuck in Sunnydale during his attempts on Buffy Summers' life.
- This caused her to think she accidently killed Katrina while fighting demons and almost turn herself in before figuring out Warren was responsible for her death.
- Used Andrew's attraction towards him to his advantage.
- Ostracized and later abandoned Jonathan and later even abandoned Andrew.
- Shot Buffy and Tara Maclay, almost killing the former (he only failed thanks to Willow's intervention via magic) and killing the latter.
- Additionally even though Tara's death was unintentional he still went to the Summers household with intent to kill and felt no remorse for what he did, even mocking Willow over it when the latter has him restrained in the woods.
- Plotted against Willow and Buffy in horrific ways with Amy Madison such as suggesting the idea to hex her with his appearance and eventually try to have his personality take over her mind, nearly driving Willow to insanity.
- Lobotomized and tortured Willow.
- Blowed up the Slayer HQ.
- Despite the ridiculously high standards of the Buffyverse, he's still able to stand out as he's just a normal human who mainly has his brilliant mind and very briefly superpowers he gained from an external source.
- While he initially was a rather bumbling and incompetent villain like the rest of the trio, his comical moments gradually became less prominent after he killed Katrina and are completely gone by his subsequent appearances.
- While he and Amy Madison were in a relationship by the time of season eight and Amy genuinely loved Warren, his affection for her is rather superficial and pragmatic due to her magic being the only thing keeping him alive.
Trivia[]
- Adam Busch, who plays Warren Mears, explained in the DVD commentary for the home media release of the fifth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that he sees Mears as a pretty flawed character who has the chance to redeem himself but chooses not to because of the several issues and the inability to communicate or talk to others about his wishes.
- Warren is one of the few Buffyverse big bads to be considered purely evil and is unique amongst them as he is the only one who is an ordinary human, the closest to him in this regard would be Caleb who is a superpowered human (although Warren does briefly gain superpowers in "Seeing Red" and is brought back from the dead through magic during season 8).
