Vincent Whittman, better known as Vox, is a major antagonist in the adult animated musical dark comedy series Hazbin Hotel, serving as a major antagonist in Season 1 and the main antagonist of Season 2.

He is a technopathic former Overlord of Hell, the founder of VoxTek Enterprises, and the former de-facto leader of a trio of overlords known as the Vees, consisting of him, Valentino and Velvette. He is one of the three pioneers of Hell's media industry, who plots to stage an uprising against the angels so he could rule all of Hell and Heaven as a God.

He is also Alastor's arch-nemesis and former close friend, with one-sided romantic feelings. After Alastor rejected his offer of a partnership and laughed in his face, Vox became obsessed with undermining his influence in Hell and proving himself superior to him. His plans are ultimately foiled by the combined power of Charlie and her allies, leaving him disgraced by all of Hell for almost getting them killed. Left as a severed head, his role as CEO of VoxTek is passed onto Valentino.

He is voiced by Christian Borle.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General[]

  • Unlike most sinners in Hell, who are either morally grey, tragic victims of their vices and Heaven's unfair divine judgement, or have morals and people they genuinely love, Vox is a selfish megalomaniac who only cares about his own power and image.
    • His history as a human on Earth also shows he was always a terrible person who would use and murder people just to be the center of attention.
  • His friendships with Velvette and Valentino, while initially genuine, are eventually subverted and even before subverting this, when his plot to invade Heaven gains ground, he neglects and degrades them as his subordinates despite their loyalty. It gets to a point that he has no hesitation in risking their lives when attempting to overload the Might of Lilith and endangering half of Pentagram City.
    • Though they continue to care about him and save his life even after how he treated them, he shows no remorse for endangering them or care for them after his defeat, merely asking about his approval rating and trying to justify himself as "getting a little carried away" instead of apologizing.
      • Despite being in a relationship with Valentino, with tie-in material on the VoxTek Employee Hub showing he spoils him and takes care of him (such as buying him food he doesn't even want as Valentino didn't eat all day), there's little indication he loves Valentino the same way Valentino loves him, with the majority of their on-screen interactions being sexual in nature.
        • Even then, as Season 2 goes on he becomes a lot more condescending and manipulative towards him, with Vox trying to hypnotize him just to show himself superior for Alastor, even insulting Val racially by calling his Spanish an "island language". While Valentino is an awful person himself, he at least genuinely cares about Vox and Velvette.
  • His past of being in love with and then getting rejected by Alastor when offering him a partnership, while initially quite sympathetic due to how needlessly cruel the rejection was, is later subverted with his increasingly vile and petty actions, particularly when he endangers part of Pentagram City just so he could kill Alastor. Plus, he was already a vile serial killer and cult leader before meeting Alastor, further negating his tragedy, and the majority of his villainous actions in present day are unrelated to his feelings about Alastor, such as his plan to take over Heaven as well as his horrific torture of Angel Dust.
    • Though there are strong indicators (and outright confirmation via Word of God) that he had romantic feelings for Alastor and was genuinely polite to him, which made the rejection more painful, these feelings have been discarded by the present day, being little more than an obsessive sexual hatred. He takes joy in humiliating him and only let him live to rub his success in his face, having planned to kill Alastor after he succeeded in his conquest.
  • While he has a fondness for his pet shark Shok.wav, praising him as the "best and biggest demon shark in the world" and being happy when he comes to his defense, while Shok.wav sees him as a father, he subverts his care for the shark after he accidentally flung him away with his tail, getting extremely pissed enough to use the Might of Lilith to try and kill Alastor with no regard for his pet's life or well-being despite Shok.wav being in blast radius.
  • He has no regard for the sinners in his employ, either mistreating them himself or enabling them to be abused by his partners. He only chastises Velvette and Valentino in order to protect their, mainly his, public image and not out of disgust. In particular, he takes sadistic pleasure in Angel Dust's sexual abuse at the hands of Valentino, even editing clips of him being beaten in public with comedic sound effects for his own pleasure and satisfaction.
  • While he poses himself as a well intentioned extremist who's declaring war on Heaven to avenge the Sinners who were permanently killed during the Exterminations in Season 2, this is clearly just a front to keep his fellow sinners on his side, even with Zestial saying "but his true allegiance... lies only with himself". It also ultimately comes off as hypocritical given how he didn't care how many casualties were caused by him going trigger-happy with the Might of Lilith during his battle with Alastor.
    • Even if his outrage at the Sinner genocide was entirely genuine, this did not justify attempting to kill Heaven residents who weren't individually culpable.
  • While he was a complete joke in Season 1, with his obsessive hatred of Alastor being exaggerated and over-the-top, while also being sexually aroused by seeing Alastor hurt in the fight with Adam, he starts to be treated seriously in Season 2, where his villainy is framed in a serious and dramatic light as he becomes a threat to Heaven and nearly destroys half of Pentagram City.
    • While he still has many comedic moments, such as his insensitive mariachi performance for Carmilla leaving him embarrassed and making a collage of his victories over Charlie that irritated the latter, most of them are used to highlight his egomania and his pettiness and are only funny to the audience.
  • He has very good manipulation skills, as he was able to nearly destroy friendships and get a head of his enemies to make them blindly turn against each other instead of him to make it easier, for example:
    • He endangered Husk as Angel jumps in front to save him, but gets mad at Angel for nearly killing himself.
    • He sadistically revealed one of Angel Dust’s sins as a murderer to Charlie when she got a bit pushy over his sin, causing a rift between Charlie and Angel’s friendship, having him mad at her for bringing Vox to the hotel, despite that she didn’t know him like he did.
    • He overheard Lucifer’s one weakness that he told to Vaggi and used that to his advantage to make Lucifer look weak, but filmed to show Charlie, using his manipulation to make her enraged at Lucifer and Vaggi for having him threaten him behind her back, as well as causing an argument between Charlie and Vaggi over their flaws, ending with Charlie telling off Vaggi and Vaggi shunning Charlie, and overall having Charlie foolishly and selfishly kick Lucifer out despite everything he’s done for her.
    • He has managed to get ahead of Charlie’s crew by using Angel Dust to unknowingly spy to get to know Charlie and the group, all their weaknesses and flaws to his advantage. Making Vox one of the few Hellaverse villains so far who came very close to emotionally destroy the team’s friendships in order to break them and make it easier to closely beat them. But failed due to not understanding they were more than friends, they were family.
  • As much as he advocates for Hell's future and the "unity of sinners", he is shown to be racist on multiple occasions as he dresses up in a stereotypical mariachi outfit in an attempt to persuade Carmilla (who is Spanish) to join him, and calls Spanish an "island language" when Valentino, who is a Floridian Latino, spoke in it, despite sleeping with him and knowing him for years.
  • He used Lilith's name as a marketing strategy, going on multiple occasions by saying she would be proud on how much Hell has grown, claiming that she rallied sinners to attack Heaven to create a war, also claiming that he wants to finish what she had started. Despite this, he's shown to not care about her as much as he says he does as when he tried making Charlie saying he is the most powerful sinner, as he belittled her, along with Alastor and his fellow Vees.
    • Even if Lilith's intention was to create a rebellion in Heaven, Vox's plan with her name wouldn't have worked since (supposedly) Lilith has been in Heaven for 7 years, meaning that Vox's statement on her wanting to engage war in Heaven wouldn't have worked well if she has been living there.
  • While the Hellaverse's heinous standards are high, Vox is currently one of the most heinous and dangerous villains of the franchise so far, because even aside from letting Valentino sexually abuse Angel Dust, his plan of conquering Heaven so he could torture and kill his enemies before trying to destroy half of Pentagram City are some of the most heinous acts in the entire Hellaverse.
    • The only villains that can rival him in heinousness, such as Adam and Lute, as they have higher resources due to leading an army of Exorcists and the former being an ascended archangel who is given a gift to very powerful on his own, yet Vox proved to be more vile and psychotic than both Adam and Lute, who to some extent showed sincere friendship (and love, in the case of Lute), as he cared mostly for himself and subverted his redeeming qualities, and was willing to destroy everyone, including his allies to destroy Alastor, Charlie and Emily and to prove he's a God.

Background[]

  • When he was alive, after being dissatisfied with being a weatherman on the TV network he worked for, he became a sadistic serial killer, murdering his rivals and even his own bosses to climb the ranks and out of petty jealousy for being more successful and popular than him, in each case with sadistic glee. His murders were remarkably brutal:
    • He used his weatherman's stick to slit the throat of a news anchor and dancingly tossed his corpse into a dumpster, then replaced him and pretended to mourn his death for publicity, while also callously kicking away the female anchor mourning her co-worker and possible partner's death.
    • He bashed in the head of a talk show host with a stage light to take his place.
    • He strangled and hung his producers with a microphone cable just because they were loose ends, despite them being the ones who got him on the talk show.
    • He arranged for a safarist to be eaten by a shark by cracking the glass of the shark's tank.
    • He killed a cooking show hostess by cutting the fuel line, causing the room to fill with methane gas, triggering an explosion when she lit a match.
    • He had a gameshow host crushed to death by a spinning wheel by removing the screws keeping it in place.
    • He stabbed his boss Robert B. Sinclair to death on the top of a roof after forcing him to sign control of his TV network to him, dropping him to the ground, with the man getting struck by lightning on the way, where many terrified onlookers saw the corpse.
  • He manipulated his viewers into becoming a cult centered around him to expand his influence throughout the entertainment industry under the promise of giving them better entertainment before a television hanging over his head fell on him and electrocuted him to death.
    • His followers were also electrocuted to death with him due to electricity spreading to them through the shallow pool they were standing in.
  • Shortly after his arrival to Hell, he became an Overlord who managed to trick countless sinners into becoming his servants.
    • He also had ambitions of ruling Hell very early on given his proposal to Alastor, and after he was rejected, he apparently threw a "tantrum" and fought him.
    • Additionally, at some point, he became partners with Valentino and Velvette, fully aware that one is a serial rapist and the other sells rape drugs/"love potions" (even advertising the latter).
    • He also contracted Baxter to work for him and create Shok.wav.

Season 1[]

  • He committed mass brainwashing across the citizens of Hell to buy his shoddy products and eventually turn them into his slaves in the future. To make it worse, he has been implied to have done this multiple times.
  • When Valentino started to throw a temper tantrum after learning that Angel Dust had been staying at the Hazbin Hotel, Vox called in the “lowest earners” for Valentino to shoot and kill for his own sadistic enjoyment, and even though this doesn't actually kill them, it still shows how Vox is willing to use living people as objects for Val to destroy out of anger. He also showed no care when he learns Val tore apart one of Velvette’s best models.
  • When he learned that Alastor finally came back after 7 years, he attempted to slander him across all of Hell and in an attempt to stop him from making a deal with Charlie, the princess of Hell, Vox instructed Sir Pentious to infiltrate the Hotel as the Vees' spy, install cameras, and sabotage Charlie's entire dream.
    • When Pentious was caught, Vox very angrily and coldly told Pentious to commit suicide and derided him as a miserable failure. Worse, unlike most of Vox's crimes throughout the first season, this is played for serious drama, and Pentious even followed Vox's suicide encouragement and accepted being permanently killed by Vaggi's angelic spear. Had it not been for Charlie's intervention, Vox would have been mostly responsible for Pentious' demise.
      • While attempted suicide encouragement is not a unique crime in the Hellaverse given how Blitzo and I.M.P. try to goad Lyle Lipton into doing it, Vox's crime stands out as especially heinous due to how much gravitas and seriousness it is treated with, unlike how Blitzo and I.M.P's encouragement of it to Lyle is played entirely for black comedy.
  • When the hotel gang and the cannibals battled the Exorcists during Extermination day, Vox and the other Vees use his numerous hidden cameras to enjoy the Hotel's failure out of pure sadism, with Vox very sadistically cheering when Alastor is defeated by Adam, calling it "better than sex", which made Velvette feel very uncomfortable.
  • Despite being surprised, he took joy in seeing Adam getting repeatedly stabbed to death by Niffty, as it proves that even the higher angels can be slain.
  • After the Extermination was cancelled, he, along with the other Vees, sang about their intend to use the power vacuum as an opportunity to seize and take over the Pride Ring, all while mocking Alastor over his near-death experience.

Season 2[]

  • He got angry at Katie and scolded her for writing something that wasn't insulting enough against the Hotel.
  • When Valentino brought a sinner with him to a meeting, Vox threw her into the shark tank to be eaten by Shok.wav just to get Val to pay attention to him.
  • Throughout the season, he made every sinner turn against the hotel by framing Charlie as a liar/dictator who had no idea what redemption really is, in order to convince them to join him and form an army in order to start a war against Heaven and conquer it, after which during the song "Once We Get Up There", he revealed how he planned on becoming a God and torturing and killing everyone who had ever looked down on him just for fun.
  • During the song "Hazbin Guarantee (Trust Us)", when a group of sinners left the hotel, he convinced one of them to work for him and the Vees as a porn star, promising to make her famous and rich, and would then exploit and overexpose her for his own personal gain to the point where sinners grew to hate her for her overexposure, leaving her in tears, and then cruelly fired her after she outlived her usefulness.
  • When Charlie attempted to show him and Velvette during their visit to the hotel that redemption is possible by having Angel Dust save Husk from being run over by a train, Vox attempted to stage a freak accident by removing the train's brakes so that Husk would get killed by the angelic spear taped onto the front of the train, leading to Angel jumping in front of the train to save him and likely would've killed them both had Vaggi not saved them at the last second.
  • After Charlie got the idea that having a sinner act against their own sin that got them sent to Hell could be the key to redemption, Vox sadistically revealed Angel's sin of killing his father to try and horrify Charlie and Vaggi over the fact that Angel was a murderer before cruelly rubbing it in his face and mocking him over the fact that he may have done it for the abuse his father put him through, leaving him blindly angered at Charlie for bringing Vox to the hotel and hating himself more for revealing his worst deed, putting a strain in their friendship and taking joy out of it.
  • Before he and Velvette left the hotel, he asked Charlie if she thinks someone like him can be redeemed, with her responding that she believes anyone can be redeemed. Based on Vox's expression after she says this, which was annoyance and disgust, he was likely trying to break her into thinking a cruel person such as himself had redeeming qualities; and ended the conversation with him saying why he sees Alastor humoring her.
    • While Vox likely didn’t mean his words seriously, it would still make him a hypocrite as he revealed Angel was irredeemable because he killed his father, yet Vox had killed his co-workers out of jealousy and to rise up when he was alive.
  • He and the Vees engaged in a battle with Alastor, Husk and Niffty in a street that resulted in several casualties and heavy collateral damage, and when Alastor offered to become their hostage in exchange for sparing Husk and Niffty, Vox arrogantly bragged to all of Pentagram City over how he "won" on the news and in a parade, humiliated him on live television, and tortured him by forcing him to watch as he and Val had sex in bed and electrocuting him.
    • Additionally, according to Zeezi, Vox might have raped Alastor with a chair.
  • When Lucifer arrived in an attempt to intimidate him into backing out of his plans, he humiliated him in front of an entire audience of sinners by revealing his restriction against hurting sinners, all while he was able to actually get under Lucifer's skin by taunting him for letting exterminations happen which might've caused Lilith to leave him.
    • This would leave Charlie angered at Lucifer for making things worse to the point where she kicked him out of the hotel, which left him depressed over the fact that he failed his daughter, and would also spark an argument between Charlie and Vaggi which resulted in them temporarily ending their partnership with each other; which resulted in Husk to temporarily quit the Hotel and go back to his old casino, but returned thanks to Angel. Despite their flaws, Vox was to blame for everything, as he was intentionally trying to destroy Charlie's friendship with Vaggi, and everyone around her.
  • When Sera, Emily, Abel and a reluctant Lute attempted to make peace with Hell and apologize for allowing the yearly exterminations, Vox cruelly mocked them over their attempt to apologize and continued to stir the attention of the sinners towards him by reminding them of the thousands of sinners who died during the exterminations and showing them horrifying pictures of sinners being brutally slaughtered like sheep, making Emily feel more immense guilt seeing how cruel the exorcist army were to defenseless scared sinners, then sadistically taunted Sera, Emily, Abel and Lute by telling them that they and all of Heaven will perish by his hands during the war, he even mocked them by telling them that they should better kill themselves before he does.
    • While his words are somewhat justified, as he told the angels how bringing gift baskets and simply apologizing isn't enough to actually make up for the genocide and all the pain they caused (and it made Emily and Abel see how serious this situation really is and impact), Vox never actually cared about any of the sinners that were murdered over the years by Adam and his exorcist army, as he only used the pictures for those who lost their friends and families over the years to an advantage to make them side with them and give them a reason why the angels don't deserve to be forgiven.
  • He managed to make Sera snap and ragefully but unwittingly admit that sinners like Vox is the reason why she allowed exterminations, saying they're just power hungry and violent, then twisted her words to his advantage of by making it sound like she said that all sinners are nothing more than monsters to her, giving the citizens another reason to be scared and hate the angels more, and claimed how she did only did it to keep them from talking to each other as a sign of empowerment.
  • He rallied an army of Overlords and sinners and waged war against Heaven, during which he convinced Carmilla Carmine to join him and make the Might of Lilith, a weapon designed to destroy Heaven using Lucifer's power, by using her insecurities of losing her daughters against her to get her to foolishly comply, which left her close friend Zestial disappointed in her for choosing to ally with Vox.
  • He was amused at the thought of Charlie committing suicide once the next part of his plan (having a brainwashed Angel Dust insist that she was wrong and the Vees should be followed by all Sinners) was enacted.
  • He tortured and hypnotized Angel and used him as a spy for several months in order to gain information about the hotel, which how he was able to be one step ahead of Charlie and her friends and find out how to slander them.
    • Afterwards, he then ordered Valentino to bring Angel to him via intimidation and mind control, and when Val reluctantly complied, Vox brutally tortured Angel and spitefully revealed that he had been using him as a spy the whole time before brainwashing him again into becoming part of his rebellion and forcing him to rat on the hotel for its inability to rehabilitate sinners.
    • To make matters worse, after the final battle, this would leave Angel filled with a tremendous amount of guilt for being used as a spy and led to him leaving the hotel and continuing to work for Val to distance himself from his friends out of concern for their safety, leaving Husk and Cherri Bomb emotionally devastated because of his departure.
    • In addition, his comment about how he found Angel's agonized screaming cute "every time" he hypnotized him during late night jobs Valentino gave him indicates he tortured him during previous meetings as well.
      • Worst of all, the torture was completely unnecessary to hypnotize Angel into telling him about the Hotel, meaning he only did so out of sadism.
      • It's also implied he regularly hypnotizes Angel to make him more complicit to Valentino's sexual abuse of him.
  • He tricked Lucifer and lured him to his hideout where Vox would then kidnap him and use him as a battery for the Might of Lilith, which was shown to be painful every time it fired. It was also shown to have been hurting and possibly even killing Lucifer, as he was bleeding and very weakened when the weapon started to overload.
  • He fired a holy blast at Heaven with the Might of Lilith and destroyed the shield protecting it, endangering the lives of the innocent angels and winners within it and causing all of them to panic to Sera for help, which left her severely distressed over not knowing how to protect Heaven.
    • While this likely wasn't his intention, him threatening Heaven with an Extermination made all of the Winners become aware of the Exterminations that were going on in Hell for the past 7 years which could lead to problems within the realm in the future.
  • He calls Charlie over the phone by tauntingly telling her that he had captured Lucifer and invited her to his party to witness his rise to power and watch him take over Heaven, threating his life if she doesn't comply, making Charlie finally see how cruel and vile Vox truly is, calling him a monster despite her optimism and belief in second chances.
  • When Charlie and Vaggi arrived at the party, Vox made a comment on Charlie dating Vaggi, since she is an angel and former exorcist. While this was likely done to ruin Charlie's image more of her dating a former exorcist angel, it could lead to bad consequences for Vaggi in the future as this was said in front of a large audience who were unaware of her secret.
  • During the party, he repeatedly mocked Charlie over her failures by showing her pictures of her failing to prove redemption is possible just to get under her skin for his own amusement.
  • After he hypnotized all of the sinners in Pentagram City, he taunted Charlie for failing to make Hell better before saying that she is a pale imitation of Lilith and that she would be disgusted at the "weak, pitful failure" Charlie is, just to prove his victory over her and break her spirit.
  • He tried to force Charlie to admit that he was the strongest sinner in Hell on camera to make him powerful by the approval of a powerful royal, but Charlie rightfully refuses, but Alastor uses their deal to make her say it just to stroke his ego, but overall allowed Alastor to break free from his deal with Rosie due to her failing to make him the strongest, which could have disastrous consequences in the future now that he is free from his deal.
    • During this, he reveals that he didn't care about Valentino, Velvette or Lilith, whose name he had used as a marketing strategy to gain the upper hand and acting like he was finishing what she started, showing that he lied about wanting to share the power of being a god to his two friends.
  • After he accidentally broke his deal with Alastor by touching Charlie's shoulders, as Alastor specifically told him not to lay his hands on her, Vox attempted to kill him in a fit of rage, causing a huge amount of destruction throughout Pentagram City with both his Full Demon form and the Might of Lilith, which killed numerous sinners and endangered the life of Shok.wav since Alastor was hanging onto him as Vox was targeting him.
    • This caused his approval ratings to drop and everyone in Hell to finally see Vox really is nothing more than a liar and a tyrant who didn't care about the lives of anyone in Hell, destroying his reputation and ratings.
      • This also makes Vox a hypocrite as he told off Valentino and Velvette for risking the Vees' reputation, only for him to do the same thing once Alastor got under his skin.
      • As he was targeting Alastor, he permanently destroyed Emily's middle-left wing when she went out of her way to save Alastor from being killed, thus forcing her to wear a prosthetic wing to replace the one she lost. What makes this worse is because the beam was angelic, the sinners that were caught by it were permanently killed.
  • Filled with psychotic rage, Vox was willing to kill Alastor, Charlie and Emily for ruining his reputation (when it was actually his own fault) out of sheer spite and to prove his power.
  • When Carmilla warned him that the Might of Lilith was overloading and would destroy half of Pentagram City and everyone with him in it if it exploded, he sadistically stated that he didn't care about Hell, Heaven or anyone else, being more than willing to sacrifice part of Hell, himself and his allies just to kill Alastor.
    • This causes Valentino and Velvette to turn against him for his attempt to kill everyone over Alastor.
      • Even after being called out by them about trying to kill everyone just to spite Alastor, he instead manically says that it is his moment of glory and that he is a god.
        • Although it is true that he was not entirely in his right mind during this moment, with later admitting that he got a little carried away, he showed no remorse for any of his actions and had the audacity to ask Val and Velvette how his approval ratings were, much to their annoyance, with Val even coldly stating that he won't talk to Vox over this.
        • Even when Charlie, Emily, and the rest of the Overlords started using their powers to stop the Might of Lilith from exploding, Vox pathetically and desperately tried stopping them from doing so, showing that he was still willing to let the weapon explode, even though his plans were foiled, and started whining as a result when they ignored him.

Trivia[]

  • In the now non-canonical stories of Voxtagram, Vox was a victim of physical abuse by Valentino, who called him a horrible boyfriend. In the series, the roles seem to have been reversed, with Valentino genuinely loving Vox and being a victim of emotional abuse from him. If the stories had been canon, Vox would likely be Near Pure Evil.
  • He is, so far, the only Hellaverse character to be Pure Evil, as the other villains who could qualify have never-subverted redeeming qualities (e.g. Valentino, for loving his fellow Vees, and Adam for caring about Lute). This could change with future seasons of both Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss.
    • While he may be Pure Evil now, this could change in Season 3 as Vivziepop confirmed it will feature a humbled Vox dealing with the fallout of his actions. Plus, she has mentioned that Vox is only a villain in the show "so far", meaning that he can possibly become Near Pure Evil or Inconsistently Heinous. It's also likely that he will rekindle his lost redeeming qualities, namely his care for the other Vees and Shok.wav.
    • It's worth noting that Vivziepop stated in a podcast that Vox still cares about the other Vees even after the events of Season 2, but her word is contradicted by the show itself which shows Vox showing zero remorse for nearly killing his fellow Vees. Because of this, Vox has been theorized by some to be an unintentional Pure Evil and that Viv likely intended him to be seen as Near Pure Evil.
  • Vox's murder of his boss, Robert B. Sinclair, is based on a real life murder, as Robert B. Sinclair was a real life film and television director who was murdered. In real life, however, instead of being stabbed and struck by lightning while being thrown off a rooftop in the 50s, Sinclair was murdered in his own home during a burglary in 1970, in which the assailant was Billy McCoy Hunter.
