Void is the secondary antagonist of the Berserk franchise.
He is the oldest member of the God Hand and acts as the de facto leader of the group. When summoned through the Behelit by a tortured soul, he personally marks victims with the Brand of Sacrifice in order for the summoners to become Apostles. He is the arch-nemesis of Skull Knight.
In Japanese, he was voiced by the late Unsho Ishizuka in the 1997 anime and the Millenium Falcon arc video game, by the late Shinji Ogawa in the Golden Age arc movie and by Takashi Inagaki in the Berserk Musou video game. In English, he is voice by Jon Avner in the 1997 anime and the Golden Age arc movie.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Like Griffith, Void used to be a normal human who served as an adviser to King Gaiseric in ancient Midland. But after he enraged the king for some reason and being tortured in the Tower of Rebirth, he sacrificed all the citizens in the ancient Midland and become the first God Hand serving the Idea of Evil.
- While his appearance of brain being exposed implied that he might be horribly tortured by the King Gaiseric, his action of sacrificing all the innocent citizens in the kingdom far outweighs his suffering, and he is not shown to be quite affected by this tragedy.
- It is heavily implied Skull Knight is the King Gaiseric himself. After Void caused the sacrifice of the kingdom and the death of his beloved, the Lady Priestess of the Cherry Blossoms, Skull Knight was led on a quest for vengeance towards the God Hand that has lasted a millennium.
- As the oldest member of the God Hand, he has led the organization for more than a millennium, having numerous people become Apostles or members of the God Hand by sacrificing their loved ones and renouncing their humanity.
- Due to this, he is indirectly responsible for the actions of many Apostles, including Wyald, Snake Baron, The Count and Emperor Ganishka.
- He personally brands the victims with the Brand of Sacrifice, which initiates the ritual for humans to sacrifice their loved ones to become Apostles and sends the souls of the victims to the Abyss. He has done this for at least 1,000 years and for each of the current members of the God Hand.
- He convinces Griffith to sacrifice his comrades, showing him the image of the castle Griffith admired in his youth and urging him to accept his destiny and continue his dream to soar in the sky with raven-black wings. Void's words serve as one of the final pushes for Griffith to sacrifice the Band of Hawk and become Femto.
- He brands all the members of the Band of Hawk with the Brand of Sacrifice, initiating the Invocation of Doom and having the Apostles devour the Band of Hawk, sending their souls to the Abyss.
- The Brand of Sacrifice he marked Guts and Casca with would cause them to endure a fate worse than death and force both of them to be haunted by demons and the souls of the dead for the rest of their lives.
- Along with other God Hand members, Void attempts to convince The Count to sacrifice his daughter, Theresia, in order to rejuvenate himself.
- Though he acts more affable towards others than the rest of the God Hand and speaks in a philosophical manner, this behavior does not detract from his heinousness, nor is it a redeeming quality.
- For example, he friendly welcomed Band of the hawk and addressed them as "honored guests", but he later marked them brand of sacrifice and made them brutally slaughtered by apostles, and watched Femto raping Casca without any emotion, showing his affability and respect to others aren't genuine.
- While convincing Griffith to become Femto, Void claims to him that "[...] We art kinsmen... o blessed King of Longing", which shows that he may have some genuine respect for the rest of the God Hand; however, since it is shown that there were multiple God Hands in the past, all of which have Void as the only common member, it is very likely that Void does not care at all about his "kinsmen", and has no qualms with substituting them when necessary.
