NOTE: This page is only about the original 2007 Modern Warfare sub-series of Makarov since the reboot version is from a separate universe and his Mobile comics version wasn't voted as Pure Evil, and thus only the original version of Vladimir Makarov's info and crimes should be put here. |
“ | All warfare is based on deception. For years, the West's hypocrisy has made the world a battlefield. The corrupt talk; while our brothers and sons spill their own blood. But deceit cuts both ways. The bigger the lie, the more likely people will believe it, and when a nation cries for vengeance, the lie spreads like a wildfire. The fire builds, devouring everything in its path. Our enemies believe that they alone dictate the course of history, and all it takes is the will of a single man. | „ |

Vladimir Makarov (Russian: Владимир Макаров), also known as Kingfish, is the main antagonist of the Call of Duty franchise's original Modern Warfare sub-series, serving as the secondary antagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the main antagonist of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
He is a former Russian military officer who became one of the leaders of the Russian Ultranationalists and the right-hand-turned-successor of his mentor Imran Zakhaev, as well as the founding leader of the Inner Circle and the archenemy of John Price, John "Soap" MacTavish, and his former best friend Yuri. He is a ruthless, psychopathic and sadistic terrorist mastermind who was best known for leading a massacre on Zakhaev International Airport in Moscow, which instigated World War III between the Western Civilization and Russia in his attempt to restore the power of the Russian Empire. He is also the one responsible for the nuclear bomb that killed 30,000 U.S. Marines who served under General Shepherd. He is the grand mastermind behind the events of the original Modern Warfare sub-series, being the cause of all the events that transpired and the puppet master pulling all the strings behind the scenes.
He was voiced by Roman Varshavsky.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
Background[]
- Prior to joining the Russian Ultranationalists and the events of the first game, Makarov led Spetsnaz soldiers during the first Chechen War and had committed brutal "cleansing" raids.
- Makarov became corrupted when his mentor Imran Zakhaev awarded him power for saving him.
- Ordered Khaled Al-Asad to detonate a nuclear warhead which levelled an entire city that killed both Al-Asad's soldiers and 30,000 U.S. Marines, the latter of which caused General Shepherd's descent into extremism.
- Orchestrating a series of terrorist attacks across both Europe and Russia that included bombings, assassinations, bank robberies, and mass murders, killing countless people in his campaign to "honor" Imran Zakhaev's legacy.
- Also, during his campaign, he profited from money laundering, drug trafficking and sex enslavement to fund his terrorist operations.
- According to General Shepherd, Makarov is even worse than Imran Zakhaev himself, shown how heinous and vile he is.
- In "Operation Kingfish", Makarov set a bomb to lure Task Force 141 into a trap. His soldiers captured Captain John Price and send him to the Gulag, but failed to capture the Task Force 141 and Delta Force soldiers.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2[]
- Makarov copied the ACS Module and killed thousands of Americans. According to Alejandro Rojas, the only man Makarov hates greater than the Americans was locked up in the Gulag and that person is revealed to be none other than SAS Captain John Price.
- In the infamous "No Russian" mission, he leads a false flag operation by personally leading a massacre on Zakhaev International Airport, resulting in the deaths of dozens of innocent civilians and security personnel, before killing undercover CIA operative Joseph Allen and pinning the blame on the United States, sparking war between America and Russia and leading to World War III in the process.
- Prior to the attack, he wounded his former best friend Yuri and left him for dead when he tried to alert the FSB of Makarov's plan. However, Yuri survives and is saved by an FSB medic. Yuri now harbors a complete hatred towards Makarov and joins the Russian Loyalists and Task Force 141, with the one goal to kill his former friend and leader.
- According to the "Return to Sender" cutscene in the sequel, 243 people were killed in the massacre.
- According to Shepherd, Makarov fights his wars without any rules or boundaries. He doesn't flinch at torture, human trafficking, or genocide. He is not loyal to any flag/country or their set of ideals and trades blood for money.
- In "The Enemy of My Enemy", Makarov goes into hiding and gives Price General Shepherd's location for him and Soap to kill him, not out of altruism but to get Shepherd out of his way.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3[]
- After Shepherd's death, Makarov came out of hiding and tries to tie up loose ends by sending his men to kill Price and Soap until they escaped with the help of Nikolai and Yuri.
- Makarov obtained chemical weapons from Sierra Leone, supplied by the African Militia led by Waraabe.
- He kidnapped the Russian President Boris Vorshevsky and threatened to torture/kill his daughter to force him to give up the launch codes to the country's entire nuclear arsenal.
- Upon gaining the codes, he would've used them to launch the nukes on Europe so he could destroy the entire continent and conquer it with ease.
- Makarov sent his men to Berlin to capture the Russian President's daughter, Alena and bring her to the Siberia with the intention of torturing her.
- He ordered a series of chemical attacks on various European cities, allowing the Russian army to invade the entire continent and escalate World War III killing many people, including 35,000 people in Paris.
- In London, he had his men drive a box truck with chemical weapons on an innocent family (the Davis family) and it blows up, killing Mr. Davis, his wife and their daughter, Sarah, who was simply an innocent child.
- In Hamburg, Makarov's men captured and attempted to assassinate the Vice President of the United States only for the Delta Force to rescue him.
- Killing both Loyalist commander Kamarov and S.A.S. operative Soap MacTavish with planted bombs at Prague when he knew Task Force 141 were attempting to assassinate him.
- He cares about no one but himself. Even his allies he just uses to increase his power and sees them more as pawns than actual people and didn't care if they died or were captured. Given by the fact he didn't show any emotion and not caring on the deaths of Lev, Kiril, Viktor, Waraabe, Alejandro Rojas, Alexi, etc, he also didn't care about Volk's arrest and the unknown fate of Anatoly, despite their allegiance to him.
- Didn't care if his own men were injured, killed, or captured and saw them merely as expendable pawns.
- While it was stated in the newspaper excerpts that he wants to avenge Imran Zakhaev's death (and also saying "For Zakhaev" during the "No Russian" mission) and that this is the reason why he hates Price and Task Force 141 so much, it is most likely fanaticism rather than genuine care, not to mention that those excerpts also state that Zakhaev kept Makarov in check due to his radical methods when he was alive and he also didn't care about the fact that he commited a massacre at an airport that was named in Zakhaev's honor.
- His claims for wanting to restore Russia to its former glory are proven hypocritical by his eagerness to kill other Russians, directly and indirectly.
- During his last moments, Makarov killed Yuri after the latter shot him, in which he then attempted to kill Captain Price as well.
- His death is played for satisfaction, with Price lighting a cigar afterwards, with triumphant music playing in the background.
Trivia[]
