You mistake stars reflected in a pond for the night sky.
~ Vilgefortz - his most famous quote.
You invariably desire to row upstream and piss into the wind. It had to end badly. Know today, here, in Stygga Castle, you have pissed into a hurricane.
~ Vilgefortz, to Geralt during their final encounter - another famous quote.

Vilgefortz of Roggeveen, or simply Vilgefortz, is the secondary antagonist of The Witcher book series and a major antagonist in its Netflix TV adaptation.

He is first seen as compassionate and highly intelligent. In reality, Vilgefortz is a highly cunning, sadistic, psychopathic megalomaniac who wanted Ciri for her blood, and used the help of his agents Rience, Schirrú, Stefan Skellen, and Leo Bonhart, to achieve that goal. Ultimately, Vilgefortz’s plans failed when Geralt and his company arrived at Stygga Castle to rescue Ciri and Yennefer.

History[]

This section is too long. Visit here for more details: Vilgefortz's Synopsis on the Villains Wiki.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Though Vilgefortz had a tragic past of being left alone in the streets of Lan Exeter as an infant until he was taken in by the druids, his tragic past is lost when, after manifesting his magical powers, he rudely refused to train his powers in favor of being a mercenary.
  • During his mercenary career, Vilgefortz committed many crimes, such as murder, robbery, assault, rape, and even breaking royal laws. After these heinous acts, Vilgefortz fled to the ends of the world to escape justice.
  • When Vilgefortz found out that the Cintrian duke of Duna was actually a Nilfgaardian outcast named Emhyr, he manipulated him into wanting to restore the Emreis family to the throne of Nilfgaard and revealed to him the prophecy about the White Cold. Anything to convince him to his side where he could older blood for evil plans.
  • Before meeting Emhyr for the first time, Vilgefortz had no concern or respect for him, manipulating him to reclaim the elder blood of Ciri who is Emhyr's daughter. Even after Emhyr overthrew the Usurper and became the Emperor of Nilfgaard, he showed no loyalty to him because when Emhyr gave him the order to kidnap Ciri, instead of carrying out he preferred to deceive him to have the real Ciri all to himself.
  • After Vilgefortz brought Emhyr to Nilfgaard, he conducted disgusting experiments on young women and girls in Stygg Castle and other hideouts of his own until death. Where Vilgefortz harvested the embryos from pregnant women all in order to have a method to artificially inseminate Ciri and then remove her placenta so he could create her offspring, he could rule the world. When Dijkstra found his hiding place where the experiments were conducted, he felt disgusted.
  • As part of the First Northern War, Vilgefortz undercover allied himself with the mages defending the northern kingdoms against the invading Nilfgaard during the Battle of Sodden under the pretext of hiding his connection with Nilfgaard so that he could secretly conspire against the northern mages.
  • After Vilgefortz became a member of the wizarding chapter, he has an assistant and private secretary Lydia van Bredevoort where Vilgefortz manipulated her into loving her just to have another pawn. And in addition, when Vilgefortz asked Lydia to examine the artifact, causing her facial disfigurement while wearing the illusion, he still didn't care. And when Lydia sacrificed her life with the dice, he felt neither tears nor remorse.
  • After the fall of Cintra, Vilgefortz freed a thug named Rience from prison, making him a student who liked to hurt people. And after the end of the First Northern War, she sent Rience to find Ciri to kidnap him.
  • Vilgefortz bribed mages like Fercart, Artaud Terranova and Francesca Findabair to reveal his plan to invade Thanedd where all the mages would be gathered on the peninsula and then liquidate them in exchange for a bounty they wanted.
  • Before the outbreak on Thanned Vilgefortz, after meeting Geralt for the first time, he tried to recruit Geralt to his group by blackmailing and manipulating him to have another pawn for his plans.
  • Vilgefortz organized an assassination attempt on Thanedd causing countless deaths of magicians, sorcerers and sorceresses and brought chaos to the entire northern continent, triggering the Second Northern War. These led to some kingdoms from the north like Temeria being expelled from the kingdom of mages out of distrust, what do you know when Yennefer was kidnapped by Francesca she was considered a traitor to Nilfgaard even though she was against Vilgefortz or Tissaia de Vries due to the loss of trust in mages she committed suicide to be neutral.
  • Enjoyed torturing Yennefer for the location of Ciri (instead was given the location of Geralt).
