Man needs no divine assistance. He makes himself! I chose to exterminate the zombies. I chose to kill. But I hurt myself, too -- to remind me that even I am only human!
~ Zsasz's philosophy.

Victor Zsasz is a supporting antagonist of the DC Universe, specifically within the Batman franchise.

He is a serial killer who believes that life is meaningless and that by killing his victims, he is in fact "saving" them from their pointless lives. He is obsessed with increasing his "score," which he keeps track of by marking each murder on his skin with the same knife he uses to kill. As such, he becomes an enemy of Batman in the process.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He has murdered hundreds of innocent people (including children) due to his nihilistic nature of thinking he is freeing them of life; he kills his victims by slitting their throats with his knife and putting a tally mark on his body for each person.
  • He tried to kill Alfred Pennyworth, stabbing him in the stomach and severely wounding him, which put him into conflict with Batman.
  • When asked by Doctor Temple, an Arkham psychiatrist, on why he killed people, he admitted he has no dysfunctional family background, has suffered neither trauma nor abuse, and kills for only one reason: because he chooses to. He then proceeds to lure Temple to his cell before strangling the poor doctor to death.
    • While it was later shown that he had somewhat of a tragic past of losing his job and attempting suicide, only to later kill someone to defend himself and leading to him becoming a serial killer, it does not make him sympathetic at all since he chooses to become a serial killer out of homicidal sadism rather than being affected by any tragedies in his past.
  • He tried to murder Stephanie Brown, the new Robin.
  • When he is about to have a quarterly psychiatric review, he kills his guards with metal poles and escapes.
  • He kidnapped runaway children and had them fight to death, the winner of which would have to face Zsasz himself.
  • He has murdered his way out of the Arkham Asylum numerous times and even slaughtered his way into the asylum with the intent to kidnap and torture Catwoman to death.
  • He allied himself with Emperor Penguin in an attempt to turn every last citizen in Gotham into bat monsters that would rip each other into shreds for his own amusement.
  • He kills a young girl's parents and then attempts to kill the girl as well, promising to put her tally mark right next to both of her parents tally marks on his body.

Trivia[]

  • In more than one story, Batman has identified Zsasz as the criminal he hates the most—an impressive distinction, given the heinous crimes the criminals in Batman's rogues gallery regularly commit and the personal crimes they have committed to harm Batman, especially the Joker who is also a villain that Batman clearly despises.
  • The tallymark he has saved for Batman is not on top of his forehead, as is often mistaken. Rather, it is in his own eyelid, so that "every time he blinks, he is reminded of his most prized kill."
