Vearn, also known as the Dark King (The Great Demon King in Japanese), is the main antagonist of the Dragon Quest spin-off manga Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, and its 2020 anime adaptation. He is a demonic god ruling the infernal Underworld, often called Nadiria in the Dragon Quest lore, and intends to destroy the Surface World so the sun would shine upon his realm. He revived and recruited the Dark Lord Hadlar to build an unstoppable Dark Army, only to be opposed by the disciples of the Great Hero Avan.
In the 1991 anime, he is voiced by late Kenji Utsumi as his elderly form. In the 2020 anime, he is voiced by Takaya Hashi as his elderly form and Takehito Koyasu (who also voiced Dio Brando) as his young/true form in the Japanese version, and by Paul Dobson as his elderly form and Alex Zahara as his young/true form in the English version.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Though he was among the Darklings and Dragons were banished to the Underworld where they're being given harsh conditions while the humans were given to live in the Surface World where the sun shines over it, Vearn's past has nothing to do with his atrocities and it was clearly motivated by his obsession with power and Darwinistic beliefs, which invalidates his Freudian Excuse as result.
- After invited Lon Beruk to build him the Staff of Edacity for him, he tried to corrupt him by offering him to join the Dark Army with him. Though he let Lon Beruk go when he rejects, he only waited for him to reconsider his offer, hoping that he will join with him one day.
- Through reviving Hadlar after his defeat at the hands of Avan, he is responsible for everything Hadlar has done during the first half of the series, which led to Baran became an outcast to Alkeed Kingdom when they suspected him of working with the Dark Army.
- After reviving Hadlar, he secretly implanted the Black Core inside of him just in case. While observing the fight between Baran and Hadlar, he later plans to detonate it once the Dark Commander is defeated.
- After witnessing the destruction of an Alkeed Kingdom at the hands of Baran, he corrupted him into joining the Dark Army out of being impressed by this and his hatred of humanity, but only to keep his true plans of destroying the entire surface just to keep him in line.
- Doesn't even care for his own subordinates of the Dark Army, seeing them as his tools and pawns for his plans.
- Sent Hyunckel to kill Dai and his friends, leading him to attack the Papnica Kingdom as result.
- Despite giving him one more chance to prove himself, he threatened Hadlar that he'll be punished if he failed to kill Dai and his friends once again.
- Send Killvearn to assassinate Baran.
- After Hadlar is defeated and realized the Black Core is inside of him, he allowed Mystvearn to detonate the bomb in order to blow up the Field of Death and the heroes there before revealing the full view of Vearn Palace. This even led to Baran's death as he sacrificed himself to contain the explosion and protect Dai out of paternal love for him.
- Before he began to fight the Disciples of Avan, he casts a Frizz spell at Baran's corpse to incinerate him, which is an act of disrespectful as he only did this to spite them all, including Dai who furiously charges at him for this before Vearn blasts him unconscious with his Dark Magic.
- Using his Staff of Edacity, he attempt to incinerate Dai and his friends by summoning Calamitous Wall against them if it wasn't for Hadlar.
- While fighting Hadlar, he plans to execute him for rebelling and betray him.
- With Zaboera's help as he restrained Hadlar, he attempt to kill him by impaling him to death with his Staff of Edacity, which leads to Block sacrificing himself to protect his master.
- After Block is destroyed, he spitefully destroyed the remains of his head for ruining his chance of killing Hadlar.
- Fires five tower-shaped bombs all over different locations all around the world, nuking them all after landing which almost killed other people here including the Fake Heroes.
- Has both Hyunckel and Crocodine unfairly executed in order to lure the Disciples of Avan and the others to Loroi Valley to save them, all in order to set up a trap for them just as they expected.
- Vearn's encounter with Dai has caused him to grow traumatized and fell into despair since the death of his father and being outmatched by Vearn has took a toll on him. Additionally, hearing that everyone is counting on him due to his status as a Hero has caused him to have a mental breakdown and runs away out of fear, not to mention he's still a child by the time. Despite this, Dai managed to get over with it thanks to Popp's encouragement.
- Sending both Mystvearn and Zaboera to summoned all of the monsters from the Underworld in order to kill Dai and his allies once and for all.
- When Dai and Leona went to confront him at the Tower of Supremacy, Vearn clearly mocks them both and attempt to undermine the young Dragon Knight's confidence for bringing the Papnica Princess with him.
- While fighting Dai, he attempt to kill him by unleashing a Calamitous Wall at him, but the young Dragon Knight managed to withstand it.
- After revealing to him that he recruited Baran to the Dark Army due to his hatred of humanity, he attempt to do the same to Dai by preying his fear of rejection from the humans. But when Dai rejects his offer, he decide to take an extreme measure by attempting to kill him.
- After merging himself with his original body back into his true form, he attempts to kill Dai once and for all by using Demonic Guard of Heaven and Earth before finishing him off with his deadly attack that could kill him called Calamitous End.
- Tried to offer Princess Leona to join with him and forced her to watch as he killed Dai once and for all just to torment her for fun. After she wounded him with her knife, he proceeds to turn Leona into an Eye Jewel out of sheer petty and spite, putting her in a fate worse than death as she unable to do anything but to watch as he slaughters her loved ones.
- Cruelly kicks Dai away to stop him from reaching to Leona, who is trapped inside an Eye Jewel.
- After Popp and the others saved Dai from an impending death, he proceed to turn their allies into Eye Jewels whenever they were weakened or severely injured from their fight.
- In order to break Dai and Popp's spirits, he spitefully released the last pillar from his palace to drop it onto Loroi Valley where all of their allies are below which almost annihilated them as result.
- All of the six pillars he released around the world has contained a giant Black Core that is ten times powerful and destructive than the ones he implanted inside Hadlar's body which destroyed the entire Field of Death, creating a world-wide hexagon that will blow up the entire Surface World once and for all. Hearing this causing Dai and Popp to almost fall into despair as there's nothing, they could do to stop him. But unfortunately for Vearn, all of the disciples' allies managed to survive from being annihilated thanks to Merle's warning, causing him to almost detonate the Cores out of spite until those who were trapped in the Eye Jewels started to attack him.
- Cruelly mocks his rival Velzar when they're communicating by gloating over his victory that he won the bet against him over who will be the one to decide what to do with the Surface World.
- Realized that Gome was inside Leona's royal dress, he tored it apart and crushed the golden winged creature out of fear and spite because he saw the Tears of God as a threat to him, but not before Dai wished for everyone's hearts to be united which save the entire world from being destroyed.
- Sent the gryphon monster Jamirus to attack the Fake Heroes and stops them from freezing and defusing the Black Core at a pillar on the Northern Orzam.
- Instead of accepting the bonds of humanity once he failed to blow up the Surface World, he decided to slaughter Dai and everyone else so no one could stand in his way.
- Before he and Dai are ready to fight one-on-one, he traps Popp, Leona and all of Dai's friends inside the Heart of Vearn Palace, almost getting them all killed inside once it's drops onto the Surface World.
- Even when Dai transforms himself into a Dragonoid and gained an upper hand on him, he decides to use the last resort by turning himself into a Sovereign Supreme, madly yelling that destroying Dai is everything and calling himself a feral beast of terror once he finally rules over the Tri-World.
