Vassago Casals, also better known as PoH, is one of the two main antagonists of the Sword Art Online franchise.
He is the secondary antagonist of the Aincrad arc and one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Chudelkin) of the Alicization arc. He also appeared as the main antagonist of the video game Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment.
PoH is the leader of the infamous Red Guild known as the Laughing Coffin and was one of the 10,000 players who were trapped in Sword Art Online. He and his guild were heavily sadistic psychopaths who wanted to murder as many people as possible. His guild was later destroyed by a large force of cleaners, but he was neither captured nor killed during the crusade.
He is also one of the arch-enemies of Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya, and is by far one of his most personal enemies yet (alongside the likes of Nobuyuki Sugou).
He is voiced by Tsuyoshi Koyama and the late Keiji Fujiwara (who also voiced Vladimir Makarov in the Japanese dub of the Call of Duty franchise) in Japanese and by Xander Mobus in English, who also voices Momoshiki Otstutsuki in Boruto.
What Makes him Pure Evil[]
- Vassago was a hitman and a member of a Korean crime syndicate. He was sent into SAO to assassinate a target who had become trapped in the death game and used the opportunity to commit as many atrocities as possible for his own pleasure.
- He corrupted numerous SAO players into accepting the belief that it's OK to murder other players.
- He established the player-killing guild Laughing Coffin, which terrorized and killed hundreds of people in SAO, under the belief that Akihiko Kayaba would take full blame for their crimes.
- He betrayed the Laughing Coffin by deliberately leaking the location of the compound, so he can make the SAO players fight and kill each other for his amusement.
- The impact of his actions is far and wide-reaching, as his two former acolytes Shouichi Shinkawa and Atsushi Kanamoto would go on to continue the player-killing that happened in SAO by creating the Death Gun plot, resulting in more people getting killed. Kirito himself was nearly killed twice. He fought and killed several members of his guild. The trauma caused by the killings later prompted him to investigate the Death Gun plot. Later, Atsushi nearly murdered Kirito, prompting Kikuoka to place him back into the Underworld to save his life.
- Vassago joined Glowgen Defense Systems and participated in their attack on Ocean Turtle to steal Soul Translator technology, before eventually logging into the Underworld, where he assisted Vecta/Gabriel with his plans.
- He personally engages in murdering people once again in the Underworld after getting bored with doing nothing while the War of the Underworld rages.
- He invites thousands of Korean and Chinese players into the Underworld by taking advantage of their prejudice against Japan and orders them to brutally slaughter the Japanese players.
- When several Korean and Chinese players see through his trick, he spurs the remaining players still consumed by their prejudice against Japan into killing the dissident players.
- He brags to Asuna about betraying the Laughing Coffin and making the SAO players fight and kill each other just to spite her and the SAO survivors.
- After encountering Kirito once again, he delivers him a vicious beat down.
- He announces that he will kill everything in the Underworld.
- He has no loyalty to anyone, even Gabriel Miller, and planned to usurp him after killing Kirito.
- After being defeated, he gloats to Kirito that he will always be hellbent on him and Asuna and will find and brutally murder the two.
- He shows no care for the deaths of his soldiers.
- He lives for nothing more than pure destruction, carnage, warfare, and death.
- Although Vassago's overall behavior and actions above could be attributed (at least in part) to his unfortunate upbringing (being sired solely to be a kidney donor by his father, having to live in a trashy household with an emotionally abusive mother who didn't want him to begin with, stowing away to Japan with his dad to get away from his mom and living as an illegal immigrant and thus taking to a life of crime to avoid deportation), he had since reached the point where it can no longer paint him in sympathetic light.
Trivia[]
- He, alongside with Nobuyuki Sugou, Gabriel Miller, Quinella, Shouichi Shinkawa and Atsushi Kanamoto, are the only Sword Art Online Pure Evils, although Dee Eye Ell and Emperor Cruiga Norlangarth VI are likely to count as well.
