Validar is the secondary antagonist of Nintendo's 2012 tactical role-playing video game Fire Emblem: Awakening, the fourth installment of the Archena Saga.
He is the fanatical leader of the Cult of Grimleal and master of Aversa, whose goal is to revive his master, the Fell Dragon Grima. He is also the biological father and arch-nemesis of Robin, whom he wants to corrupt to become a vessel for Grima.
He is voiced by Kyle Hebert (who also voices Spec in the Studiopolis dub of Baki the Grappler, the Chief Lion in Beastars, and Grima in the same game) in English, and by Takehito Koyasu (who also voiced Niander Wallace in Blade Runner: Black Lotus, Vearn in Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai, Dio Brando (as well as his counterparts Parallel World Diego Brando and Heaven Ascension DIO) in the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise, Ukyo in Samurai 7, Nobuyuki Sugou in Sword Art Online and Kei Ibuchi in Yakuza Kiwami 2) in Japanese.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- After becoming the new leader of the cult of the Grimleal, he tried to find a suitable vessel for his master Grima, in order to awaken him and allow him to kill all of humanity.
- As the leader of the Grimleal, he continued their practices of razing villages (including those of Plegia), enslaving people with magic, and capturing women and children to sacrifice them to Grima against their will.
- This along with the Grimleal's plans to revive Grima, led to the previous Exalt of Ylisse and the father of Emmeryn, Chrom and Lissa, to declare war on the Grimleal and Plegia.
- It's also because of the war that Validar and his cult caused, Emmeryn would face immense hardship from her people after becoming Exalt, with some throwing rocks at her to express their anger.
- Validar kidnapped a young village girl named Aversa after discovering her magical prowess, erasing her memory, inserting false memories into her mind, and brainwashing her to be his right-hand woman. To ensure that the brainwashing would not be undone, he had her entire village destroyed and her entire family murdered.
- Validar then enslaved Aversa to commit his heinous deeds, particularly for the purpose of seducing, manipulating and killing enemies of the Grimleal.
- Even when freed from the mind control by the Wellspring of Truth, Aversa is insecure and heavily remorseful about spending most of her life as a slave being controlled by Validar and the Grimleal.
- Validar and the Grimleal help prop up Gangrel, an insane, bloodthirsty and nihilistic pauper from the slums who hates the Ylisseans as the King of Plegia, while also assigning Aversa as his assistant to further manipulate Gangrel.
- During Gangrel's reign, the Grimleal were allowed to send inquisitions to kill their enemies and force Plegian civilians into worshipping Grima.
- He tried to assassinate Emmeryn, the exalt of Ylisse, in hopes of crippling the nation and having Plegia achieve their victory.
- Following the death of Gangrel, Validar would take over as the king of Plegia and install another Grimleal dictatorship and pressgang even more Plegian civilians into serving the Grimleal, ensuring most people in the country were under Grima's thrall.
- Upon learning that Walhart, a warlord from the Valm continent, intended to invade Plegia in order to eradicate the Grimleal and stop Grima's resurrection, Validar used Aversa to plant Excellus, a Valmese Grimleal, to serve as Walhart's tactician and sabotage his campaign from within while also buying time for the Grimleal.
- While Validar forms an alliance with Ylisse and gives ships to Chrom to fight Walhart, it is only a backup plan to deal with Walhart. Validar also keeps Chrom in the dark about Walhart's true goal to wipe out the Grimleal.
- He tries to corrupt Robin, revealing himself as their father, so he can use them as a vessel for Grima.
- When Valm is defeated, he quickly betrays Ylisse, weakening Chrom and controlling Robin into giving him the Fire Emblem to unseal Grima. Once he acquires it, he orders Algol to kill them.
- With the Emblem Validar performs a ritual at the Dragon's altar, and brainwashes a massive population of Plegia to sacrifice themselves on the altar, so Grima could take their souls.
- He tries to kill Robin and Chrom in hopes of killing the two. However, it was revealed that it was part of a plan to have Grima take control of Robin and kill Chrom.
- In an alternate timeline, this plan of Validar succeeded, and Grima successfully possessed Robin, using them as a vessel to destroy the world and eradicate humanity.
- When he finds out his plan failed and Robin tricked him, an enraged Validar tries to kill him, Chrom, and the rest of the Shepherds one last time.
- Even in his death, Validar's cult continues his works and even assists Grima during the final battle, with Averasa attempting to kill the Robin, Chrom , and the Shepherds in an attempt to avenge her master's demise.
- While the rest of the Grimleal have a dozen vile members, Validar stands out the most not only as the cult's leader, but also for his personal villainy toward Robin and the fact that he has killed thousands of people, directly or indirectly.
- Despite being incredibly loyal to his master Grima, this is more because of his fanatical devotion instead of genuine care for him.
Trivia[]
- In the English version, it is claimed Validar kidnapped Aversa for her magical potential, but this is not in the Japanese script, where it is never explained why Validar enslaved her, and Aversa is mainly used for espionage.
- Some fans speculate that Validar murdered Robin's mother at some point before the events of the story. If true, this could make him even worse.
