You failed. Just as you have failed everyone in your life. Tomorrow, a village will be missing its idiot. You should’ve kept running when you had the chance, Frenchman.
~ Valak, whilst possessing Sister Irene and before it possesses Frenchie.
There was a crooked man... and he walked a crooked mile; The crooked man stepped forth and... rang the crooked bell; And thus his crooked soul... spiraled into a crooked Hell; Murdered his crooked family... and laughed a crooked laugh.
~ Valak as the Crooked Man; its own twisted rendition of "There Was a Crooked Man".
Your name gives me dominion over you, demon, and I do know your name! You are Valak - the defiler, the profane, the marquis of snakes! In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, I condemn you back to Hell!
~ Valak's defeat as Lorraine Warren condemns the demon back to Hell.

Valak is the main antagonist of the The Conjuring Universe.

Valak is a powerful demon that manifests as a demonic nun both to mock the faith of its enemies and to hide among them. It also holds the title as the archenemy of the Warrens, Lorraine Warren in particular, with their rivalry starting when Sister Irene exorcised it into Maurice towards the end of its origin film. Valak was once an angel but rejected by the God and was imprisoned to Hell.

Valak is also the archnemesis of Lorraine Warren (in The Conjuring film series) and Sister Irene (in The Nun spin-off film series).

It is portrayed by Bonnie Aarons as a nun and Javier Botet as the Crooked Man, with its voice provided by Robin Atkin Downes, who also voiced Deathshead in Wolfenstein, Baron Zemo in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Solaris in All-Star Superman, Abomination in the 2010 Marvel Animated Universe, Kano in Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge, Emperor Nefarious in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Shinnok in Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms. While possessing the Abbess of St. Carta, it was portrayed by Gabrielle Downey.

What Makes It Pure Evil?[]

  • Although Valak originally was an angel who served God, this doesn't hold up as a prevention as Lucifer convinced Valak to rebel against God, thinking it can rule the world if God is overthrown, subverting all genuine loyalty it had for God to fulfill its desires for world domination.
    • This also includes its current superior, who is Lucifer, now known as Satan. It is also argued that if Valak gains enough power, it would betray Satan without a second thought.
  • The above makes it clear Valak has a perfect moral agency despite its transition from angel to demon, as it was its choice to become the evil entity it is today, taking clear sadism when torturing and manipulating its victims.
  • Took the form of a nun and walked across the Carta Monastery, killing nuns one by one, when they prayed to banish it.
  • Murdered all of the nuns, leaving only two survivors.
  • Murdered one of the nuns after she tried to retrieve the key to the relic.
  • Caused Sister Victoria to commit suicide in order to prevent him from claiming her as a host.
  • When Vatican tasked Burke and Sister Irene to investigate, Valak manipulated the characters throughout the film ranging from creating mass illusions with the ghosts of the slain nuns to weakening Sister Irene and tormenting Father Burke by taking the form of a young boy who had died from a botched exorcism at his hands.
  • Buried Father Burke alive before luring Sister Irene to become possessed.
  • When the catacombs began to flood, Valak tries to strangle and drown Sister Irene to death.
  • Latched itself onto Frenchie, a French Canadian otherwise known as Maurice who is revealed to have an inverse cross branded on the back of his neck.
  • Possessed Maurice for a year, before being banished by Ed and Lorraine.
  • Cursed Lorraine to have visions of Valak and Ed's death as revenge.
  • Murdered Ronald DeFeo Jr.'s family on November 13, 1974.
  • Showed Lorraine a vision with Ed being impaled, to torment her, and continued to haunt Lorraine since then.
  • Took the form of a nun and used the Christmas carol Hark! The Harold Angels Sing to signal its arrival in order to blaspheme Lorraine’s faith.
  • Compelled Ed by a dream to paint Valak in its nun form, and then chose this form to torment Lorraine, using the painting to its advantage.
  • Appeared as the Crooked Man nursery rhyme character and attacked Billy Hodgson.
  • Turned into a shadow and possessed Janet.
  • Manipulated the spirit of Billy Wilkins to torment the Hodgson family.
  • Locked the Hodgson family outside the house.
  • When Ed ventured into the house, Valak caused the pipe to burst open, partially blinding his eyes with steam.
  • Tried to kill Billy with an umbrella.
  • Tried to cause Janet to commit suicide.
  • Possesed Frenchie before it was banished to hell in its previous defeat at the hands of Sister Irene in the Carta Monastery.
  • Rised into the air and then set on fire and burned to death Father Noiret.
  • Assaulted Sister Irene in an alleyway appearing through a bookshelf.
  • While possesing Frenchie it killed an innocent papergirl that witnessed it telling Frenchie what to do to get the Eyes of St. Lucy to restore its full power.
