“ | My children, you have had the good fortune to be chosen as parasites. Your great predecessors defended out cities and our people, and they splendidly took flight as our representatives. Turn your life into a blaze of glory and shed every last drop of blood you have. I pray that you will become a shining ray of hope for humanity. | „ |
~ VIRM (as Papa) justifying his sociopathic goals by lying to his subjects. |
“ | VIRM will not die. I’m certain we will face each other again in the apex of evolution. As long as this universe contains a flicker of life. | „ |
~ Papa's last words |
VIRM is the main antagonist of the 2018 original anime television series, Darling In The FranXX and its manga adaptation.
He is a chairman of an organization known as APE that rules Earth in the distant post-apocalyptic future. At first, he was portrayed as a Big Good considering his seemingly benevolent nature towards the people that he ruled, the Parasites and tried to protect the Plantations from a hostile monstrous species called the Klaxosaurs, and in return, the Parasites religiously referred to him as a god who ruled the Plantations. Not only that, but he also ordered the FRANXX units to fight against the Klaxosaurs.
However, it's revealed near the end of the series that Papa was the real enemy of both Parasites and Klaxxosaurus alike and the main antagonist. It also turned-out Papa and his Vice Chairman of APE were part of a starfish-like creature known as "VIRM", an immortal parasitical alien lifeform who tried to assimilate other beings and do everything in its power to achieve their goals in order to destroy the universe.
He is voiced by Tesshō Genda (who also voiced Emperor Ganishka in Berserk and General Yamazaki in Live A Live in Japanese and by Christopher Sabat (who also voiced Arthur Watts in RWBY) in the English dub.
What Makes Them Pure Evil?[]
- Arrived on Earth where they found a civilization of Klaxosapiens that inhabited the planet. They attempted to negotiate with them to assimilate their species, and when they refused, VIRM started a war against them and almost succeeded in bringing about the extinction of the Klaxosapiens before their weapon, the Star Entity, finished off their army. With the Klaxosapiens on the edge of near extinction with some Klaxosaurs surviving with them, VIRM made plans to get their revenge years later by disguising themselves as humans.
- After years of plotting, they formed the organization known as APE. They later show the humans the discovery of Magma Energy, which result in influencing many politics and the economy. As the years go by, they attempted to use the energy to give humans immortality through it. But in reality, the energy only destroyed their reproductive organs to make children and would later led to many conflicts and desertification in certain areas.
- With the announcement of the Plantation Project at hand, VIRM, now known as Papa, and the other being his Vice Chairman, became the leader of humanity behind the shadows, another step to their plan's advantage.
- In order to prevent the Klaxosaurs from interfering with their plans, he had his scientists and FranXX build artificial behemoths called "FRANXX" and soon have children created to pilot the FRANXX and have then named "Parasites" to fight off the Klaxosaurs while VIRM made further steps towards his goal.
- VIRM and the rest of APE have made many human sacrifices in order to create even more powerful weapons to destroy the Klaxosaurs. But to make matters for the children, his influence would end up making them obey him without hesitation while being raised by the adults in APE and being checked on every day in "The Garden". An example of that would be the 9s.
- He ruled the plantation with an iron fist; if anyone defied him or the rules he made, APE would have their memories erased or forcibly placed in the Garden's Cryo-storage.
- He was also responsible for Zero Two's troubled childhood of being tortured and experimented on thanks to his orders for Dr. FranXX and the other scientists to carry this out.
- Because of Hiro and Zero Two's encounter and learning about love as children, he orders for their memories to be wiped out in order to make sure no one ever learns about this. As Hiro became gloomy and antithesis Zero Two was placed under the 9s.
- They, alongside their cohorts of APE, would later take over Gran Crevasse, an abandoned plantation that used to be infested with Klaxosaurs, hoping to have more information to assimilate their species. But when Klaxosaurs appeared, they would order their squads to fight them off in order to get what they needed without any interference. He even ordered Squad 26 to become suicide bombers in order to get rid of some of the Klaxosaurs.
- After the Gran Crevasse incident, he ordered the children to live by themselves in the other plantation known as Mistleteinn. But with no communication with the adults or supervisors, Mistleteinn gained some environmental problems, which results in the children not living well there.
- They soon crossed one of their most realistic Moral Event Horizons of interfering with Mitsuru and Kokoro's wedding, which they consider to be a "violation of his ruling". In a cruel act of ruining the happy lives they made together, he ordered Nine Alpha and his group to crash the wedding and took away Mitsuru and Kokoro to have their memories wiped away of each other, possibly to prevent humans from reproducing as part of VIRM's plans. This was something VIRM shows absolutely no signs of remorse for afterwards, refusing to apologize for and return the normal memories of Mitsuru and Kokoro since it was against the "protocol". In the VIRM's beliefs, they find love to be futile.
- In addition, by not letting human reproduction occur and happen, it nearly led to human extinction before revealing who they were. Luckily, Kokoro was already pregnant before her wedding with Mitsuru.
- During the final battle with the Klaxosaurs, they managed to trick the Parasites under the pretense, knowing they'll control the destiny and future alike with humanity by their side to continue manipulating after the extinction of the Klaxosaurs.
- After 001 (the Klaxosaur Princess) takes over Strezilia and implants herself in the Star Entity, VIRM finally revealed themselves to the other APE members as they later betray them after absorbing their consciousness and possibly their energy, leaving them to die.
- They then crossed their second Moral Event Horizon as he implied that he implanted a self-destruction mechanism (or to simply put it, a bomb) inside the Star Entity that will be used to destroy what's left on the Earth's surface as he and his entire army fleet prepares to attack.
- With the failure of destroying the Earth, they instead bring Hringhorni with them to space alongside their fleet in order to regroup their plans of destroying Earth once more when they promised to return. But in the end, this backfired when most of their fleet was destroyed during the process of heading to Earth, thanks to Hiro and his friends.
- During the final battle with Hiro and Zero Two, they managed to destroy Strezilia Apus after their entire fleet was destroyed by them. Leaving both the souls of Hiro and Zero Two to be reincarnated as children near the end of the series, leaving VIRM victorious. Though they soon have to recreate their army from scratch, they promise to return in the future with further plans of destroying all life in the universe.
- Overall, VIRM is a cataclysmic parasite who lacks any empathy or remorse for its actions during its time on Earth and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve its agenda of eliminating all life that refused to assimilate with them.
