This is yet another version of Hands!Mari. What She Did!Mari is possibly even more despicable then the fanon character she's based on. Warning: This one is disgusting.
What's the work?[]
What She Did is an AO3 fanfiction for the video game OMORI based on the fanfiction Hands for the same game. This fanfiction is an alternate universe where Mari didn't die at 15, the character Basil is named Rowan, and the friend group never split up. It features Sunny Suzuki dealing with the fact his sister Mari had sexually abused him since he was 12, and she had recently died, and no one but him and his best friend knew about it. This work is not pornography. It is a serious psychological exploration that doesn't go into detail about exactly what Mari did. This fanfic may be redundant when Hands already exists, but whatever.
What did she do?[]
What she did? Repeatedly and often rape her younger brother Sunny, that's what. She knew Sunny hated it, she knew it is a despicable action, but didn't care because she enjoyed it. She slowly since Sunny was twelve managed to convince Sunny that it was okay of her to do this and Sunny wanted Mari to be happy. She raped him often since he was 16. Chapter 7 details this. Once she told him that it wasn't manly of him to cry about it and even said that he should be thanking her. The work goes over the devastating psychological ramifications this has had on Sunny in depth.
Sunny's best friend Rowan found out and told Mari he was going to tell the entire town, who viewed her as a role model. Mari pointed out that the town was very religious and homophobic, and she would out him as gay and smugly told him that no one would believe him and possibly think he was the one who raped Sunny. See the page quote on her page on the Villains Fanon Wiki.
She visited home once a month from college, and Sunny dreaded her visits. However, she died in a car accident on the way to visit him one day.
Sunny had hallucinations of his sister talking to him maliciously and even appearing in the doorway to visit him. Eventually Sunny told his friends. In Chapter 8, her boyfriend Hero was the protagonist and it went over the awful betrayal he felt.
Does she pass the heinous standard?[]
She caused such torment to Sunny that her actions pass the heinous standard. While on a much lesser scale than most Pure Evils due to only having one victim (or two, if you count her threat toward Rowan), the torturous nature of her crimes + her low resources and focus on maintaining her public image allows her to stand out. Rowan and Sunny are indicated to be over 20, and Mari is Sunny's older sister, meaning Mari is no longer a teenager but a grown-ass adult, making her even worse.
Mitigating factors?[]
The version of her from False Heaven was only Near Pure Evil due to insufficient characterization due to lack of appearances in the story or flashbacks. This story does have her physically appear in two notable flashback scenes and characterizes her. She is smug and a liar, and doesn't believe her actions would have any personal consequences for her. (She was right, since her death was not directly because of her abusive behavior.) If you interpret the voice in Sunny's head and her midnight appearance as her ghost, she has far more speaking lines, but if it's just a hallucination then it doesn't count.
There are no mitigating factors that aren't obviously bullshit lies from Mari.
Verdict[]
Pure Evil and a Hate Sink, definitely.
