PT Boomer
Boomer: That, uh…engine…she’s in that mountain, isn’t she?
Burnett: Even if she were, she’d be no good to you now.
Boomer: No, you’re wrong, Burnett Stone! Just like you’re always wrong! Magic can make a man unhappy. Look what it’s done to you. I’m after
money, not magic! She’s good for one thing! She’s good for scrap! Hahaha!
~ Okay, Boomer. No literally. His last name is literally Boomer. How would I not make at least 1 “okay boomer” joke in this proposal?

Yes, you’re not mis-seeing things. Your eyes are perfectly fine. Now I think you're all thinking that this is an late April Fools joke. But what if I told you that it isn't and there actually was a CANONICAL (well sorta. It’s not canon to the main TV series but it has its own canon) Thomas the Tank Engine Pure Evil that you all didn’t know about? Well I’m here to discuss that sorta canon TTTE Pure Evil and whether he counts or not! So without further ado, let’s begin this proposal!

A lot of this is written by my friend on YouTube but I’ve talked with him, seen some of the script, edited parts of it myself and affirmed enough of everything for it to be true.

SPARKLE, SPARKLE, SPARKLE!

What's the work?[]

https://archive.org/details/thomas-and-the-magic-railroad-original-workprint

(oooh boy, tons of nostalgia coming)

Thomas and the Magic Railroad is a 2000 live-action/Model series hybrid movie. It is about a lost engine named Lady, who has magic gold dust that can allow people to travel anywhere. Meanwhile, in the Island of Sodor, a new threat to the Island named Diesel 10 has arrived. He is known for being 10 out of 10 for brute strength and devious deeds and being the blast of the past who hates steam engines, and just wants to kill off the magical engine, Lady. So it's up to Burnett Stone (his actor died in 2020, R.I.P.), Lily, Patch, Mr. Conductor (SPARKLE, SPARKLE, SPARKLE!), Mr. Conductor’s lazy cousin, Junior, and our favorite number 1 blue tank engine, Thomas to stop Diesel 10 from destroying Lady.

But today, I’m not going over the finalized film that chuffed and puffed into cinemas in 2000, no, I’m going over something else…I’m going over the 1999 Director’s Cut of the film. The synopsis is pretty much the same, but this cut goes over the past of Burnett Stone more, and how he once had it all…yet eventually he lost everything until the ending of the movie. And today, we’re going over the catalyst behind Burnett’s tragic past…

Who is P.T. Boomer?[]

(I copy-pasted some of the personality section from Boomer’s page on the Thomas wiki, but since I asked an admin on the wiki for permission and the admin gave me permission to use it, it’s not plagiarism.)

Passing Through Boomer, or P.T. Boomer for short, was intended to be the main antagonist of the film. He is a human who wears a pair of black goggles, a black coat, and is usually seen riding a motorcycle. He is shown to be a selfish, envious, greedy, heartless, opportunistic saboteur, who goes from station to station and situation to situation, making money wherever he can - usually out of others' misfortunes. He is an emotionally muddy man who is obsessed with cleanliness and order, and does not believe in magic to any extent. Now he is out of opportunities, except one - to return to Shining Time with only himself, his motorcycle, a lifelong grudge and a thirst for revenge.

However, P.T. Boomer did not make the final cut of Thomas and the Magic Railroad due to test audiences finding him “too scary” (yeah, right…and somehow, a diesel with a giant claw that could literally kill you was less scary according to test audiences. Perfect logic.) and also because P.T. Boomer had also caused pacing issues regarding the film’s story (tho in my opinion, he should’ve stated as an incredibly sadistic henchman in the same vein as Grand Moff Tarkin and Ridley.), and therefore TATMR Diesel 10 ended up being the main villain instead.

He (P.T. Boomer) was voiced by the sadly late Doug Lennox (R.I.P. to him…he will be missed, even if his role as Boomer didn’t make the Final Cut…).

What has he done that makes him Pure Evil?[]

And I had no idea he and that mountain shared a secret deep within it. Nor did I know that a man called Boomer was determined to discover the secret. And if he succeeded, he would destroy our precious universe…
~ JESUS HAROLD CHRIST, not even 5 minutes into the TATMR Director’s Cut workprint, and the narrator straight up confirms that P.T. Boomer is an omnicidal psychopath as he would’ve destroyed both universes of Sodor and Shining Time Station had Boomer succeeded in destroying the Lost Engine (Lady)! You know! This is a Thomas the Tank Engine movie! “Just a mere kids film based off of a mere kids show”!

P.T. Boomer is first seen near muffle mountain grabbing a box of dangerous explosives and taking it with him onto his motorcycle and driving it into the distance, with the narrator saying that she at first didn’t know that her grandfather, Burnett Stone, hid a secret inside of Muffle Mountain, and that little did the narrator also know that P.T. Boomer was determined to discover the secret, and that if Boomer had succeeded in doing so, he would’ve destroyed her home-universe of Shining Time Station, as well as the Island of Sodor, meaning he would’ve committed 2 full-blown omnicides had he succeeded in his plans...Y’know! What Thomas the Tank Engine is known for! 2 counts of attempted omnicide! And it’s revealed only 3 minutes into the workprint that the villain would’ve done this had he succeeded in his plans!

We then eventually see P.T. Boomer encounter Billy Twofeathers at Shining Time Station. Billy, recognizing who he’s dealing with, reveals that Boomer had left that island long ago and nearly caused an accident. Boomer then reveals that he’s back for revenge, and asks Billy where Burnett Stone is located as Boomer is looking for Burnett in order to exact his revenge. Billy then reveals Burnett is wherever he wants to be. P.T. Boomer then states that Billy is innocent like everyone else in this town and that his plan might not work. Billy then states that there is innocence there and tells Boomer not to mess with it, leading to Boomer noticing a pot of flowers and punching it solely For The Evulz while leaving.

Boomer is then seen reading a book of locations, finding out that Burnett Stone is located in Muffle Mountain. Boomer, after finding out, triumphantly gives out a small evil chuckle, while also ripping the page out of the book. He then tries to look for something in his pocket, while a newspaper-owning boy (I think?) grabs the book and the page Boomer ripped out of it and puts it in his sack, while roller-skating away into the distance. Boomer then realizes this is an opportunity for him to get to Muffle Mountain, following the kid.

We then cut to Muffle Mountain and see Burnett Stone in a depression, not seeming to understand about magic anymore and stating how his childhood seems so long, with Boomer being revealed later to be the cause of this depression. It is then revealed in a dialogue flashback that a kid told Burnett to guard the Lost Engine, even when Burnett sadly did not.

We then see Boomer atop of Muffle Mountain, tossing things away while monologuing about how he will be rich, with Patch noticing it being Boomer.

A few scenes and several minutes later, while Lily and her mother are driving in their car to see Lily’s grandpa, Burnett Stone, we then see Burnett and P.T. Boomer interact together. Boomer asks Burnett about whether the Lost Engine (Lady) was inside Muffle Mountain. Burnett responds and covers up his secret by saying that even if the Lost Engine was inside Muffle Mountain, she’d be of no good use to Boomer now. P.T. Boomer then says that Burnett is wrong about his statement of Lady being of no good use to Boomer now, just like how Burnett is always wrong in Boomer’s eyes, with Boomer following up his statement and Burnett again continuing to cover up his secret by saying that he’s only after money and not magic and that Lady is only good for 1 thing. Boomer then follows up those last words in his sentence by saying that Lady IS good for one thing: SCRAP. Keep in mind, getting scrapped is the Thomas equivalent of MURDER if you’re a steam engine, meaning that Boomer is technically saying that Lady is only good for deceased body parts…YIKES. P.T. Boomer then leaves in his car, telling Burnett that he’ll be back soon and that he’ll just have to level (i.e. blow up) Muffle Mountain himself.

It is then revealed a few scenes later that back when Burnett Stone was a lot younger, that he had a loving wife named Tasha. They were heavily in love and were like the greatest of friends, romantically and as people. This would then be explained a lot more in a later scene I’ll soon discuss.

Later, when Patch is upset at how Burnett Stone will not tell him where he heard the Lost Engine’s whistle, P.T. Boomer shows up and asks Patch where he exactly heard that whistle. Patch then denies answering Boomer’s question by saying to him that he “doesn’t talk with bullies, Boomer!” (damn that line aged well…). Boomer then tries to trick and bribe Patch into telling Boomer where Patch heard the Lost Engine’s whistle by offering Patch several bucks of money, telling Patch to think of all he could buy with Boomer’s money. Patch then tells Boomer to forget it and that he’ll never catch Patch and Burnett.

Not shortly after (by that I mean, literally 1 scene later. Damn, they juggle the Sodor and Burnett plotlines a LOT in this workprint.), Burnett then has a conversation with an what is at the moment inanimate Lady (the Lost Engine), asking her what he is to do now. Burnett then laments on how it was easier when he and his deceased wife, Tasha, were kids. Later, when Patch asked Burnett why Boomer wants to hurt Lady, he reveals that when Burnett and P.T. Boomer were far younger, Boomer was very angry due to not wanting to understand about magic, and was jealous and envious that Lily’s grandmother (Tasha) loved Burnett and not Boomer. He then says that Boomer was so jealous of Tasha and Burnett’s love that eventually, Boomer found Lady and threatened to destroy her if Burnett didn’t drive Lady. Burnett then reveals that he gave into Boomer’s request and let Boomer drive Lady, using up all her coal, and made Lady go too fast, causing Lady to crash, resulting in the deaths of Lady and Burnett’s wife, Tasha, with Boomer running away to escape comeuppance. Burnett then states that because of this crash, he was never able to fix Lady up and bring her to life to make her steam, and that Lady needs to be protected since all Boomer was interested in was gold and selling Lady and her trim for scrap (which is essentially the Thomas equivalent of selling someone to be killed). This whole thing reveals that P.T. Boomer literally killed a sentient steam engine alongside an innocent person inside said steam engine out of jealousy, and is willing to do it again if she gets revived.

Eventually, after Thomas arrives onto Muffle Mountain (unknowingly to Boomer), P.T. Boomer monologues about how he’s going to get his revenge on both Burnett and Lady, rhetorically asking Burnett what revenge sounds like…leading to Boomer blowing up the entirety of Muffle Mountain, with Thomas falling off of the top of Muffle Mountain. Thomas then realizes while falling that he left his coal truck behind, P.T. Boomer then evilly laughing after hearing this. Boomer then chases Patch and Lily to stop them from getting to Burnett Stone, failing in trying to chase them due to Thomas falling on top of Boomer’s motorcycle, causing Boomer to crash and fall off his motorcycle.

Then, in the grand climax and original version of the most iconic and beloved scene of the finalized cut from 2000, the chase scene, P.T. Boomer appears out of the magic buffers, telling Diesel 10 to wait for him as he too, is after Lady. Boomer then falls onto Diesel 10’s roof, while Diesel 10 states that it now makes 2 of them, both of them teaming up to destroy Lady in the process. Thomas, now realizing he’s dealing with 2 threats now instead of just 1, tells Lady to run quickly and that Thomas is going to help her. Burnett then states that he will help too and will not let Lady down again. Mr. Conductor then tells Thomas, Lady and Burnett to watch out for the viaduct due to it being dangerous now because of the bridge slowly collapsing. And then the chase is on! P.T. Boomer then rides atop Diesel 10, stating that he will now get Burnett Stone, with Burnett responding that Boomer won’t do so because the magic that Boomer refused to believe in will get the better of him. A few scenes of chasing throughout Sodor locations later, P.T. Boomer and Diesel 10 have gained up on Thomas, Lady and Burnett. Boomer then shouts to Burnett that the gloves are now off (it’s his way off saying that it’s the end of the line for him) and then literally takes off his gloves after saying that and throwing them away. Thomas, Lady, and Burnett then just BARELY make it across the viaduct, surviving in the end and saving the day! P.T. Boomer and Diesel 10 tho? Not so much. They then approach the viaduct, Diesel 10 being concerned about what’s going on while Boomer PANICS FOR HIS LIFE, with the both of them then falling off the viaduct after the piece of the bridge they were crossing breaks apart and onto a barge. Diesel 10 just sits there in defeat, just upset about his defeat. P.T. Boomer however is absolutely P*SSED. His entire body is covered in nothing but sludge, incredibly angry about it and staring angrily in his final moments.

Moral Event Horizon?[]

Definitely crosses it. He bullied Burnett Stone into running Lady, which caused Lady’s temporary death, and the permanent death of Burnett’s wife, Tasha, all out of jealousy of Burnett’s relationship with her.

He also tried to do the same thing TATMR Diesel 10 did in the final cut: destroy the Lost Engine (Lady) a second time and not caring that this would lead to all steam engines getting scrapped and would've caused both the universes of Sodor and Shining Time Station to be destroyed, with the narrator explicitly confirming he would’ve done so had he succeeded in his plans in Boomer’s first scene, with the bonus of Diesel 10 stating that if Lady was destroyed, all steam engines would cease to exist as a result, making Boomer genocidal too on top of him being omnicidal.

Heinous standard?[]

Easy pass in both regards to the in-general standards and heinous standards. I’m not sure whether this version of Magic Railroad was intended to be canon to the official Thomas and Friends TV series, and nothing states whether it is or not. But either way, Boomer would still pass the incredibly low standard. Murdering someone’s wife out of envy, and killing a CLEARLY sentient steam engine and trying to kill her again after she is revived, with it being confirmed by the narrator that it would destroy 2 entire universes, is easily heinous enough.

He also passes the in-universe standards too. Splatter and Dodge are nothing more than standard henchmen, both in this version and in the finalized cut from 2000. And as for TATMR Diesel 10, while still genocidal in this cut and wanting to kill Lady even tho this could wipe out all steam engines and not caring (tho Diesel 10 didn’t know about the omnicide part of what would happen if Lady was destroyed, but this doesn’t make his goals any less evil), Boomer does noticeably worse and has more of an personal impact onto the story.

Mitigating factors?[]

He has ABSOLUTELY NONE! His “romantic love” for Tasha isn’t genuine as while he was envious that Burnett was in love with Tasha instead of him, if P.T. Boomer DID truly love Tasha, he wouldn’t have allowed her to die alongside Lady. And as for the other things, he has no sympathetic moments, no redeeming qualities, isn’t incompetent (him being added to that category is solely category abuse), fully uses all of his resources he has at his disposal to do as much as he can, is fully characterized and he knows what he’s doing is wrong and enjoys it, and while he only has 6 minutes of screen time, despite being the literal main villain of the workprint, all his deeds are onscreen and the ones that aren’t still impact the characters a LOT.

The closest thing he has to a mitigating factor is that he has a bit of a ridiculous defeat of falling into sludge, but it’s not really detracting as the narrative doesn't really portray it for laughs. There is no goofy or silly music playing in the background or any slapstick or comedic lines that follow this defeat, it’s just him being angry about how he lost (albeit not saying a word about it).

Final verdict?[]

Overall, I’d give a yes. He caused Burnett’s own wife, Tasha, and the Lost Engine (Lady) to die out of envy for Burnett being in love with Tasha instead of him (Boomer), and tried to kill Lady a second time even tho this would lead to the genocide of all steam engines and the subsequent destruction of both universes of Sodor and Shining Time Station. I wouldn’t be surprised if this proposal was rejected tho due to the nature of his work. But in the end, it’s up to YOU to decide!

And remember… SPARKLE, SPARKLE, SPARKLE!!!

(teleports away with Mr. Conductor’s magical whistle)
