Unicron is the overarching antagonist of the western Transformers: Generation One franchise & the main antagonist of the Japanese Transformers: Generation One franchise.
In the cartoon, he was a giant cosmic robotic entity created by Primacron with the intent of scouring the galaxy clean of life so he could continue his experiments. However, he turned against his creator to go on his own warpath of destruction. Eventually, in Unicron's appearance in the Marvel comics, his origin was changed to that of the arch-nemesis and twin brother of Primus, the God of Light and benevolent creator of the Cybertronian race, who created the Cybertronians to deal with Unicron's damage, which has become his origin since. And no matter what the story is, what remains constant in Unicron is that he is an egotistical being seeking nothing more than the end of all existence to take pride in his solitude. He is also the master of The Fallen.
In The Transformers: The Movie, he was voiced by the late legendary Orson Welles in his final film performance, who also played Franz Kindler in The Stranger. In The Transformers, he was voiced by the late Roger C. Carmel.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
Cartoon[]
In General[]
- Despite being created to serve as a weapon of destruction, he has shown to possess a clear moral agency, as he was able to overwrite his program when he turned against his creator, Primacron, and blatantly admits he could spare planets by will if he wanted to.
- He traveled through space and devoured every inhabited planet in his path, including Lithone, wiping out their entire population (with only two surviving Lithone).
- He has absolutely no motivation for what he does, other than that stuff existing is just annoying to him for some reason.
- Overall, Unicron is absolutely uncomical and has zero redeeming qualities, with his omnicidal and cataclysmic planetary cosmic horrors, as well as his crimes being taken completely seriously by the G1 continuity’s narrative, in-universe or not.
The Transformers: The Movie[]
- He enslaved Megatron (reformatting him as Galvatron in the process) into destroying the Matrix of Leadership, as that was the only thing that could destroy him.
- He tortured Galvatron into serving him, threatening to kill him if he didn't.
- He continued to torture Galvatron as he served him.
- He attempted to destroy the planet Cybertron and both the Autobots and Decepticons out of spite for Galvatron turning against him, while admitting he could actually hold back and would've spared the planet.
The Transformers: Season 3[]
- When Starscream's ghost came into him and re-activated his head while asking to be resurrected, Unicron ordered him to retrieve the limbs of many Cybertronians and connect his head to Cybertron to make the planet his new body, and the plan would've succeeded had the Autobots not blown his head into outer space.
- While he did promise to revive Starscream, it was only to make him obey him. While he did resurrected Starscream, it was because his ghost could no longer control Trypticon's body, and he needed a body if he wanted to connect the head into Cybertron. Even Starscream turned against him by mockingly saying he should do it himself upon resurrection.
- When Galvatron and the Decepticons came to his head on their search for anti-electrons, Unicron used his internal defense systems to attack them, and he would've succeeded in killing them all. But one of Grimlock's creations, Strafe, disconnected enough of his internal mechanisms to finally kill him for good.
Japanese Generation One Continuity[]
- He commits the same crimes as his USA Counterpart.
- He attempted to make Cybertron his body in Transformers: Unite Warriors and Beast Wars Neo.
- His energy would end up corrupting Earth and turn it into planet Gaia in Generations Selects.
- In 2010 between Season 3 and Headmasters, after reviving himself he would attempt to seek revenge on the Autobots and Decepticons until he was sealed into the Triple Z point by Primus
- His appearance would inspire the Vok to take on his form for their Dark Nova forms' Unicron disguise and Unicron Neo's disguise.
Comics[]
In General[]
- His moral agency is perhaps even clearer in this version, as he wasn't created to be a weapon of destruction but is instead the brother of Primus, the benevolent creator of the Cybertronians themselves, cut from the same cloth as him.
- He destroyed nearly all of the previous realms that existed before the current multiverse because he deemed existence an insult to him.
- Ultimately, he sought to destroy the new reality Primus had defend after his initial rampage, having devoured nearly a fifth of the current multiverse already.
Marvel Comics exclusive[]
- Upon his awakening, Unicron goes on a warpath, devouring countless inhabited worlds for the sake of it.
- Upon hearing the screams of Primus, he went on a warpath that devoured even more planets, including Ghennix, which had a population of roughly 60 billion, before reformatting the survivors to be his heralds.
- Sent them to retrieve Galvatron from the future and tortured him to be his servant.
- Upon finally arriving at Cybertron, he devastated it, claiming countless lives across the planet as he reigned in destruction all across the surface, including that of Primus himself and eventually Optimus Prime, and turning it into a nearly lifeless wasteland.
Marvel UK Comics[]
- He did the same crimes he did in Transformers: The Movie as the events are canon to this continuity.
- He sent the Autobots back in time just to prevent his herald Galvatron from creating a weapon capable of killing him during the events of Target: 2006. He only did it to save his own existence.
- He enslaved the Junkions to rebuild his body and mind controlled Death's Head to kill Shockwave so Cyclonus and Scourge can be Decepticon leaders to have the war between the Autobots and Decepticons to destroy each other. He then plans to travel to Earth's past to retrieve Galvatron.
- Even after being defeated once and for all by being sealed, his lifeforce temporally corrupted Rodimus Prime and had him go on a rampage on Cybertron before it got cleansed out.
Dreamwave Productions exclusive[]
- Despite his own hand in his villainy, Unicron is the underlying corrupting influence on Megatronus Prime that led him to become The Fallen.
- Upon being awakened, he went on a rampage towards Earth that claimed countless planets, including that of Lithone.
Trivia[]
- He is the first Transformers villain to be Pure Evil. He also alongside Straxus and Scorponok are the only Transformers Japanese G1 Villains so far as others either have a prevention, fails it's high heinous standards or both.
- This is, alongside his Unicron Trilogy, Aligned, Prime Wars Trilogy, and his Reboot Films incarnations, one of five incarnations of Unicron to be Pure Evil.
