The gallant husband comes! Him I shall cast to the courtyard with a broken neck! First I shall break your miserable neck...
~ Ulrik attacking Franz.

Ulrik "The Hangman" Von Nolte is a villain who appeared in the 1950s horror comic Web of Mystery, serving as the antagonist of "The Curse of the Horrible Hangman" in issue #16. He is a former aristocrat and judge who struck a deal with Satan to attain great wealth, and is forced even in death to hold up his end of the bargain.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Made a bargain with the Devil himself that Ulrik would kill two hundred people by hanging and send their souls to Hell in return for riches. He managed to kill one hundred and ninety-six before being imprisoned by his family.
  • After being accidentally released by a thief named Werner, he decides to complete his killing spree not out of honor, but because Satan will not allow him to rest until he does his part.
  • Mocks Werner and breaks his arm before hanging him.
  • When Heinz Gangholtz escapes his wrath, Ulrik hunts him down and hangs him too.
  • Murders a random sentry for trying to stop him.
  • Pettily selects his descendant Kati Von Nolte to be his final victim in order to wipe out the Von Nolte bloodline, as revenge for her ancestors having stopped his prior reign of terror.
  • Tries to kill both Kati and her husband Franz, despite only one of them needing to die to fulfil his end of the deal.
