Toussaint is a supporting antagonist in the 2015 Western action drama film The Revenant.
He is the racist leader of a band of French trappers who are exploiting the Arikara tribe in order to get pelts. He passes himself off to the chief as a charming and reasonable businessman, even offering him a drink while bartering, when he is in reality a sadistic xenophobe who views them as savages and has no qualms kidnapping the chief's daughter and causing an innocent party to get massacred under the belief that they kidnapped her.
He was portrayed by Fabrice Adde.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Though he seems to be reasonable to the Native-Americans, he's just exploiting them to get rich and kidnaps their chief's daughter, Powaqa, behind his back and keeps her at his camp as a sex slave. This results in the Native-Americans slaughtering much of Glass's party due to their mistaken belief that they were responsible and he shows no remorse for this.
- This also poisons further relations between the Arikara and the Americans with a war having been started between them from this.
- There are subtle context clues that suggest Toussaint incited the massacre with the intent of getting both sides to wipe out each other as he says, "I didn't think he'd make it" when seeing the chief return from the massacre.
- He even supplies them with weapons when they make it clear they will continue pursuing Glass' party further to find the chief's daughter.
- He lynches a friendly Pawnee man out of bigotry and sadism, displaying his corpse along with a sign stating that all "savages" should be killed.
- He sadistically rapes Powaqa as payback for him having to give her father horses earlier.
