~ Hopper preparing to feed Dot to Thumper. |
Thumper is the secondary antagonist of Pixar's 2nd full-length animated feature film A Bug's Life.
He is a vicious and cruel feral grasshopper who acts as the enforcer and “pet”/bodyguard of Hopper, effectively serving him as his right-hand, assisting him in keeping control over the ants. Thumper serves as Princess Dot's arch-nemesis.
His vocal sound effects were provided by Frank Welker, who also voiced the Kandarian Demon in The Evil Dead, Megatron in Transformers: The Game, Unicron in Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising, Shockwave in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Red Death in How to Train Your Dragon.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He is so bloodthirsty that Hopper and the other grasshoppers had to hold him on a leash to prevent him from eating the ants.
- He almost ate Princess Dot when Hopper threatened to feed her to him so the ants would listen to his demands to collect every single ounce of food on their island.
- He scared the ants into submission once the grasshoppers returned to Ant Island and found out that the ants didn't collect enough food for them. As such, he threatened to slaughter the ants if they all didn't collect all food possible before the grasshoppers left.
- He tried to kill Dot by knocking her off a rocky cliff when her wings failed to spread, sadistically smirking as she fell before leaving thinking he had killed her.
- He guarded the Queen during the performance to prevent her from leaving before Hopper squishes her.
- He brutally beat Flik to near death after his trick to scare the grasshoppers away with a fake bird went wrong. While Hopper ordered him to do it, Thumper is equally if not more guilty, as he showed sadistic enjoyment in every second of torturing Flik.
- He ambushed Dot and tried to kill her one last time before Dot summoned Dim to help her, scaring Thumper enough to fly away, showing his cowardice and lack of loyalty to Hopper.
- Although he may appear feral, he hung out normally with the rest of the grasshoppers when they relaxed in their hideout. He also showed emotions such as laughing with them when Hopper mocked the ants, entailing he is able to situationally adjust his behavior. He also showed clear satisfaction when smiling sadistically after pushing Dot off the cliff, which suggests that his feral attitude is an act he pulls on the ants to intimidate them.
- Unlike the other grasshoppers (including his master Hopper), Thumper has no redeeming qualities to his character, and is just sadistic when doing his job.
- Although he was horrified as everyone else when Hopper buried several of his men in a pile of the same grain, it was only shock about the outburst rather than standards.
- Despite having to compete with Hopper in heinousness, Thumper manages to stand out due to being the main reason Hopper kept his control over the ants by acting as his attack dog, being the only grasshopper aside from Hopper that has attempted to kill a child, being the most deranged and sadistic of the grasshoppers, with most of them lacking the characterization and sadistic edge that he has, and being so bloodthirsty to the point of the other grasshoppers having to hold him by a leash as had he not been held on a leash during his first scene, he would have likely killed off a lot of ants in one entire spree.
