What delightful agony we shall inflict.
~ Thresh
Ah, the sweet tones of misery.
~ Thresh's most famous quote.
We have what mortals have coveted since time immemorial: eternity. It makes us prisoners. You cling so desperately to the past, even as it runs through your fingers, like sand in a timepiece, yet you're blind to the wonder of what we have been given. It has made us gods.
~ Thresh in The Echoes Left Behind.

Thresh, also known as The Chain Warden, is a villainous playable character in the multiplayer online battle arena game League of Legends, who serves as the main antagonist of the None Escape cinematic and Senna: Shadow's Embrace.

Formerly a warden from an already forgotten order, Thresh is a nightmarish creature that delights in the pain and suffering of sentient beings, dead or undead. His sadistic tendencies has gained repulsion even from other beings like him, and is arguably one of the most evil characters of the entire lore.

The 110th champion added to the game, Thresh was released on January 23, 2013, and is one of the most popular characters to play in the support role.

He was voiced by Mark Oliver. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo, whom also voiced Myotismon and Black Doom.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He was known for his cruel ideations which turned him into an outcast among the other monks of his order, so he was left alone with only his resentful thoughts for company, making him hate his own brethren. However, this is not played for sympathy as even then Thresh only cared about himself, wanting recognition and claiming that he deserved better.
  • When a fleet from Camavor, led by their king Viego, came to invade the Blessed Isles, Thresh welcomed the invaders so that he could get revenge on his fellows out of spite. When Hecarim and the Iron Order killed innocent townspeople, Thresh watched at a distance as he enjoyed all of the bloodshed before him. When Viego and his army killed the other guardians of the temple, Thresh enjoyed their deaths.
  • He led Viego to the Waters of Life knowing that he would use it to resurrect his wife Isolde, which accidentally caused the Ruination when his magical blade was overwhelmed with the magic of the Waters of Life, corrupting the mist into Black Mist and turning the Blessed Isles into the Shadow Isles. Not only was Thresh directly responsible for the Ruination in the first place, but he enjoyed the destruction of his homeland.
  • When Thresh became a specter, he enjoyed his new form since he could now torture souls for eternity. By tearing people's souls out of their bodies, Thresh absorbs them into his lantern to imprison them. He also mocks his victims' loved ones by showing them their souls within the lantern, to fill them with horror and anguish before he claims them too.
  • His habit of sadistically torturing souls has garnered hatred from even other beings like him. Karthus, normally obsessed with death, is disgusted by Thresh's torture while Yorick believes that he is truly beyond redemption.
  • He mocked Commander Ledros for years, mocking him for his constant cycle of death and rebirth so he can free his lover Kalista. He told Ledros that being immortal made them gods, and eventually succeeded in making him give up on freeing Kalista with his pendant, absorbing it into his lantern.
  • When he encountered Lucian and Senna, Thresh was able to kill Senna and imprison her soul, turning her husband Lucian into his vengeful archenemy. Thresh often taunted Lucian about Senna's demise and taunted him with the possibility of her soul being destroyed should Lucian kill him.
  • After Lucian finally succeeded in freeing Senna's soul (reviving her as a wraith in the process), Thresh let them enjoy their victory so he could toy with them in the future.
  • He woke up Viego from dormancy, now the Ruined King with complete control over the Black Mist, so he could enjoy Viego's goal to destroy Runeterra.
  • Despite his loyalty to the Ruined King, he only woke him up to see him destroy Runeterra and held no true loyalty to his king. In fact, it's revealed that he had been manipulating Viego behind his back so he could usurp him and steal his power. He even hated Viego and believed him to be a fool whom he could manipulate to his own ends.
  • He tricked Lucian in Ixtal, temporarily gaining his archenemy's trust in order to betray him and obtain another fetter to bring to Viego.
  • Ultimately, he used Viego's Ruination to absorb all of the casualties' souls into himself, becoming the new ruler of the Shadow Isles, proving himself to be a traitor for both the Sentinels and his king alike.
  • After gaining freedom from the Shadow Isles as Unbound Thresh, he continued his hobby of torture, this time all over Runeterra. He would also put on a human disguise to observe people whom he finds useful in his goals.
  • In the cinematic "A Night at the Inn", he massacred the staff of a Noxian inn, and enslaved their souls as carriage horses to be whipped by Bort, a waiter that they previously bullied.
    • While he treated Bort with decency, by tipping him a coin in his human disguise and sympathizing with his plight of being bullied, he made a deal with him to become a spirit himself so he could take revenge on the other staff. However, this is not affability on Thresh's part as he was shown to be scheming when observing Bort and kept the coin in the end, so Thresh likely corrupted Bort to cause more suffering for him to enjoy.
