| ~ Thragg's villainous breakdown as he attempts to kill Omni-Man to keep his rule over the Viltrumites. |
Grand Regent Thragg is the main antagonist of the Image Comics comic series Invincible.
He is the most powerful Viltrumite and the leader of the Viltrum Empire, as well as the archenemy of Invincible and his father Omni-Man, as well as the most powerful villain the former has ever fought.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- In his youth, he participated in the civil war on Viltrum, where he slaughtered countless Viltrumites, simply because he viewed them as weak. He then proceeded to lead the stronger Viltrumites who survived and won the civil war.
- He has conquered thousands of planets and killed countless inhabitants of the ones who resisted.
- After the Scourge Virus was released and wiped out over 99% of the remaining Viltrumites, he went back on his word to find Emperor Argall's heir and just took control of Viltrum for himself.
- When Conquest fails to kill Invincible, he threatens to kill him if he fails again.
- He sends Conquest, Lucan, and Randee to kill Invincible and destroy the Coalition of Planets.
- Locates Thaedus, the Viltrumite who defected from the Empire and killed Argall, and sends his army to attack Talescria, causing an all out war on the planet. During the fight tons of buildings are destroyed and thousands are killed in the chaos.
- Dismembered Oliver Grayson's by pulling his arm, breaking his jaw and nearly killing him. He even sarcastically remarks "he seemed like a nice boy".
- After Viltrum's destruction, he goes into a rage and decapitates Thaedus, and then crushes his head, stating that he will not be missed.
- He declares that anyone who opposes the Viltrum Empire will die.
- He beats up Invincible, Omni-Man, and Battle Beast within inches of their lives.
- Thragg and the remaining Viltrumites migrate to Earth so they can slowly regrow their army, take over, and then return to conquering the known universe. He then makes a deal with Mark and Nolan by stating that the Viltrumites will not interfere with the events on Earth and that they will focus on rebuilding their race in order to not attract the attention of the Coalition of Planets, which they reluctantly accept under the threat of the destruction of Earth at the hands of the Viltrumites if they refuse.
- While he helps Mark with stopping Allen and Oliver from releasing the Scourge Virus on Earth and gives Mark medical care after he was accidentally poisoned by Oliver, this was only out of pragmatism, because he did not want the Scourge Virus to affect himself and his Viltrumite army, and his true reason was possibly only to find out if Invincible (and by proxy his father) were descendants of Argall.
- When a scientist discovered that Mark’s DNA is a match for Argall, Thragg kills the scientist by crushing his skull. Afterwards he decides to kill Mark and is about to do so until Dinosaurus comes in to stop him. Thragg heavily wounds him, even when doing so knowingly caused destruction aboard the last remaining viltrumite warship, but the latter manages to escape with Mark in an escape pod. He later lies to Atom Eve that it was Dinosaurus who attacked Mark.
- When Earth was being attacked with potentially millions of deaths, he tells his soldiers to not interfere.
- He yells at his subordinates for not procreating with more humans, each of them give their reasonings for either interfering with the disasters on Earth or not procreating at all, one of their reasonings being that the human they’ve mated with had her heart broken by someone who cheated on her, when Thragg hears of this, he refers to humans as lesser beings that shouldn’t receive any affection. His complaints are also hypocritical as he has not committed any forms of procreation with humans himself either, likely out of arrogance.
- After finding Nolan and Debbie on the Moon, he makes an attempt to kill Omni-Man and keep him from becoming the rightful ruler of the Viltrumites, breaking his own deal and nearly killing both Debbie and Nolan.
- After being sent into exile, he takes over the planet Thraxa and rules it with an iron fist, instead of Nolan who was a peaceful ruler, up until he forcibly takes most of them off-world to avoid detection.
- Rebuilds his army by raping thousands of female Thraxans and forcing them to have his children.
- Kills Battle Beast by ripping out his heart and crushing it during their planet-wide battle.
- After killing Battle Beast, he proceeds to turn his body into a cape as a trophy. To make things even worse, he even wears the corpse of Battle Beast as he arrives to conquer his home world.
- With his new army, he has them conquer planet after planet, killing millions, if not billions of people in his plans for takeover.
- Captures multiple Ragnarrs and kills many of them for the sole purpose of teaching his children how to fight. He later uses Ragnarrs on chains as living projectiles in the final battle.
- He makes a personal visit to Mark’s home where he attempts to kill him and his family, and grabs his daughter Terra with intent of killing her, and later leaving her in front of her parent's near-dead bodies with the intention of leaving her to die.
- Kills Oliver Grayson by punching a hole through his chest when he tries to defend Terra.
- Grabs Invincible and tears him in half, but he was later healed by Atom Eve.
- Fakes any sympathy for his daughter, Ursaal, only offering revenge as a way to continue his bloodshed. He even contemplated crushing her skull for crying about the death of her brother, but relented because she was his strongest soldier and he needed her.
- When Ursaal confronts him over the deaths of thousands of her siblings, he grabs her by the throat telling her that no sacrifice is too great for their mission claiming that said fallen soldiers were weak and deserved to die. He even threatens to kill Ursaal if she feels any pity for the fallen soldiers.
- During the final battle, Nolan and Thragg brutally face off exchanging blow after blow, during the fight, Omni-Man tries to fight off Thragg the best he can, but Thragg is shown to be too strong for him as he breaks Nolan’s hand by head butting it and then immediately swipes through Omni-Man’s body, tearing his heart out and killing him.
- During his fight with Invincible, Thragg calls his children for assistance and he starts using them as projectiles by throwing them at Mark, with full knowledge that this will cause them to splatter on Mark since he is too strong for his children, which disgusts Mark and leads to him pushing himself and Thragg towards the sun to make him stop killing his own children. This is also enough for Ursaal to realize that Thragg never cared about her or any of her siblings, only himself, which leads to her and her remaining siblings surrendering.
- What makes this even worse is that many of his children were only kids, considering that they had purple skin instead of having a pink skin, which is when they are at least pre-teens.
- He and Invincible have an intense fight in the sun with both of their skin burning off and with Thragg taunting Invincible and breaking both of his arms, with the battle only ending once Thragg had been vaporized by the Sun after having his throat torn out.
- Invincible internally describes in perfect detail how much Thragg fails as both a leader and a Viltrumite for clinging to the old practices that brought their race to the brink of extinction, fighting for selfish and empty causes, and holding their species back from achieving their true potential.
- There is no indication that he ever truly cared about Argall or his mission to avenge him, as while the other Viltrumites followed him for his wisdom, Thragg followed him for his strength only, meaning that he only worshipped Argall instead of caring for him. Even during his narcissistic rant to Nolan, he claims to have been a better leader and better Viltrumite than Argall was and during which also tried to kill Argall's son [Nolan] in that moment, despite his original mission being to find Argall's heir and have him lead, proving he never cared about Argall, only himself, Thragg does not have a genuine interest on Argall and he uses him and his legacy as an excuse to kill whoever he wants.
- Initially, he seemed to love Viltrum and his people (he was genuinely heartbroken and enraged after the destruction of Viltrum to the point of shedding tears) and believed the only way for them to survive was under his rule, up until he was rejected by Viltrumites, who decided to follow in Nolan's footsteps and live in peaceful coexistence with humans; at this point, he no longer cares for Viltrum and its people and doesn't care about anything other than revenge, even if it means killing off the remainder of the pure-blooded Viltrumite populace because of his bruised ego.
Trivia[]
- As Thragg has only been recently introduced in the TV series, it is unknown if that version will count as Pure Evil as well, although considering how much of a complete and utter psychopath he was in the comics and that the show mostly stays faithful to its original story, it can be assumed he will.
