“ | I call it Starro the Conqueror! That's meant to be derisive. Sorry, old chum. These two are here to kill you. It's out of my hands. | „ |
~ The Thinker's most famous quote as he introduces Starro. |
“ | Thinker: The fodder of powerful men through every age. Dissidents, journalists, political rivals, and their loved ones. Oh, please, unclutch your f-cking pearls, Flag! WE serve the same master. Ratcatcher 2: We were sent here to stop you. Thinker: Child, your government didn't send you here to protect the world from alien technology. Your government sent you here to cover up THEIR part in it. Rick Flag: You're a goddamn liar. Thinker: American GODDAMN astronauts found Starro! YANKEE-F-CKING-DOODLE DANDIES! Although the Cold War was ended, YOUR government saw the potential in weaponizing such a powerful beast, but banish the thought of any such experiments being held on American soil. Your people have always been squeamish about the sacrifices NECESSARY for scientific advancement. So, the United States made a secret deal with the Corto Maltese government to conduct their illegal experiments here in Jötunheim. And they hired me to oversee them. And now, because of a run-of-the-mill f-cking military coup, they're gonna destroy thirty years worth of efforts. |

“ | Let's just talk about this. I understand where you're coming from. I crossed the line. Okay! I crossed the line! But I'm ready to change! I AM ready to change! I didn't mean to hurt you!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-(splat) | „ |
~ Thinker's last words before being killed by Starro. |
Gaius Grieves, better known as The Thinker, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Starro) of the 2021 film The Suicide Squad, the tenth installment in the DC Extended Universe.
He was a man with greatly enhanced intelligence who, as a result, found himself as the top scientist in Corto Maltese and the head geneticist behind the development of Project Starfish, as well as a newly-trusted ally of Silvio Luna. Soon enough, however, he is later forced into assisting Task Force X in infiltrating his base of operations in Jötunheim to destroy all of his research in exchange for sparing his own life.
He was portrayed by Peter Capaldi.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He tortured, abused, and experimented on Starro for thirty years, turning it into an angry, destructive monster in the process.
- Extorting Starro's ability to produce endless spawn of itself to kill thousands of people to hide the corruption in Corto Maltese as well as his own research.
- Experimenting on, mutilating, and even raping Starro's victims.
- Only cared for himself and having no empathy for any of the lives he's destroyed or creatures he abused for so long, and showing no loyalties to anyone but himself, switching allegiances whenever it is convenient for him.
- Also, when he was forced by Task Force X to help them infiltrate Jötunheim to destroy Project Starfish, he falsely apologized to Starro without a care by saying that they were here to kill it and it was out of his hands, showing undoubtedly that for all of this time he viewed it as nothing but an experimental subject you can just throw away when you want.
- While he was noticeably angry when Presidente Luna, General Suarez, and their soldiers murdered his assistants, this was only because he was personally inconvenienced. He gets over it rather quickly, too.
- However, due to the unforgivable and abominable atrocities he committed in the past and the fact that they are almost similar to those of Luna and Suarez's dictatorship, it was shown that he is a hypocrite.
- Likewise, he's outraged when Starro is freed towards the end, but he was only worried about what the monster would do to him.
- He let Luna use Starro to make other countries fear his dictatorship by supporting his idea and saying that only he could control the creature to spare his own life.
- After Luna was killed by squad member Harley Quinn, Suarez succeeded him and decided to instead use Starro directly against other countries. While it could have been offscreen, Thinker seemingly undoubtedly supported this idea too. This demonstrated that he didn't care much about the destruction Starro and his research could do to the world as long as it kept him from harm's way.
- Also, when Task Force X (aka the Suicide Squad) made him their captive to help them infiltrate Jötunheim to destroy every trace of Project Starfish in exchange for sparing his life, he inconsolably but easily surrendered to them without resistance.
- Trying to manipulate squad member Polka-Dot Man by appealing to his insecurities and taunting him to give him his gun (undoubtedly wanting to shoot him and escaping from the Squad), but getting shot in the right ear by him instead.
- Though that moment was converted into a deleted scene, it could explain why he wrapped his right ear later in the movie; however, it was already covered even before his capture.
- Cruelly mocking and tearing into both squad leader Rick Flag and squad member Ratcatcher 2 while revealing the truth behind not only the true nature of their mission being to cover up the US Government's involvement with Project Starfish but also the gravity of his work as a whole.
- Even though he seems to support the idea of exposing the truth about Project Starfish to the public, as he silently responds to Flag's question about a hard drive containing all the information about the project is indeed inside the computer in his lab, and he even tells Flag to give him the drive and leave together in a hurry. This was only because he was still powerlessly hostaged with his own life on the line and he wanted to leave Jötunheim as it was about to get blown up. Showing that while he can't stand that his research is being wasted, he is ready to sacrifice it if that means saving his own life.
- Though, as he said to Flag to hand over the drive to him quickly, it could mean perhaps that he planned to save his work, unknowingly how but to, at least, get his hands on it. Showing how much he was desperately still awfully devoted to his cruelly inhumane and gruesome work.

- Pleading with Starro to spare him with empty promises for change as justification.
- While his death was very gruesome, he nonetheless deserved it for abusing Starro for 30 years and murdering thousands of people with Starro's spores.
- Though he does have comedic moments, his actions are still played seriously.
Trivia[]
- The Thinker is Peter Capaldi's first Pure Evil role.
- In an interview with Collider, The Suicide Squad director/writer James Gunn discussed The Thinker's Pure Evil status. He expressed his belief that the Suicide Squad members are not evil to their core and have some goodness in them. However, when comparing them to The Thinker, alongside Amanda Waller and Mateo Suarez, Gunn personally stated that The Thinker is a "pretty bad person" who, despite being very charming and somewhat funny, doesn't have any good in himself.
- James Gunn also reiterated a similar point in the movie's commentary, initially saying that he thought Suarez was the nastiest character he wrote for the film before changing his mind when The Thinker's scene in Jotunheim began, when the audience could see the true nature of his crimes.
- This is the only version of the Thinker to be Pure Evil.
