I can come in any time I want. And I can get you anytime I want. But I'm not going to, not until it's time, when you wish you're dead, that's when I'll come inside. Do you understand me? Nod your head if you understand me... Good. Then we can have some fun. Enjoy it.
~ The Man threatening Maddie.

The Man is the main antagonist of the 2016 horror film Hush. He is a sadistic serial killer who enjoys playing "cat and mouse" games with his victims.

He was portrayed by John Gallagher Jr..

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Killed at least thirteen people before the events of the film purely for his own sadistic pleasure. Though they are done off-screen, there is visible evidence in the form of the markings engraved on the crossbow, each representing one of his victims.
  • Brutally murdered Maddie's neighbor/friend Sarah by stabbing her in the stomach multiple times, but not before shooting her in the shoulder.
  • Sent photos of Maddie to her computer from her phone to psychologically torment her.
  • Pops the tires of Maddie's car and shuts off her electricity to completely isolate her and assure that she is helpless.
  • When Maddie tries to reason with him by writing on the panel door with her lipstick she didn't see his face and won't tell anyone about what happened, he takes off his mask, and upon discovering she can lip read, taunts her about killing her.
  • Torments Maddie until she begs him to kill her.
  • Taunts Maddie with Sarah's dead body.
  • Shoots Maddie in the leg with his crossbow when she tries to escape.
  • When a suspicious John is distracted by Maddie trying to warn him, the man stabs him in the neck and taunts him in a nonchalant manner.
  • Demonstrates cowardice, as he is willing to target a deaf woman, but is reluctant to fight John until his back is turned.
  • Attempted to kill Maddie's cat, Bitch, and nail her to Maddie's front door, but Maddie shoots him in the shoulder with a crossbow dart before he can do so.
  • Crushes Maddie's hand with his foot when it gets stuck in the door.
    • At this point, he tells Maddie that he's done messing with her, and will come in to kill her.
  • Breaks into Maddie's bathroom from behind her, and taunts her knowing she can't hear him and is basically helpless. Luckily, she feels his breath when he laughs at her and avoids his attack.
  • Nearly strangles Maddie to death before she fatally stabs him in the neck with a corkscrew, ending his killing spree.

Trivia[]

  • The Man is one of the two villains from Mike Flanagan's work to be Pure Evil, alongside Bev Keane.
