The Lord of the Locusts (sometimes shortened as The Locust) is the overarching antagonist of the Bone graphic novel series.
He is a frightful demonic force who commands the Hooded One and serves as the source of evil in the universe. He is the cosmic manifestation of nightmares, which seem to come from him. He feeds on fear and preys upon people's ability to dream (their connection to the source of the Bone universe). He seeks to roam the Waking World and claim the lives of its entire population.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Even though he’s classified as a Nightmare Spirit, there’s little evidence to suggest that he lacks moral agency which, combined with how manipulative and sadistic he is, prevents him from being considered made of evil.
- He possessed Mim and drove her insane in order to take control of the Waking and Dreaming worlds, leading to the balance being disrupted and countless dragons being killed by the Queen. It got so bad that the dragons were forced to turn Mim to stone to trap the Lord of the Locusts inside her.
- Manipulated the Rat Creatures into waging war against humanity for control of the Valley, leading to countless deaths on both sides.
- He groomed Briar Harvester from a young age into being his pawn by feeding her ego and envy of her sister Rose, making him responsible for Briar becoming the vindictive psychopath she is.
- Convinced the river dragon Balsaad to betray his kind and help Briar free him from his prison.
- Tried to possess Rose to use her to free him.
- Aged Briar into an old woman as punishment for failing him after Rose killed Balsaad.
- Orchestrated the sacking of the capital city Atheia by Kingdok and his Rat Creature horde, which led to the deaths of Thorns parents.
- Resurrected Briar after first death and had her take over the Rat Creatures by torturing them with nightmares.
- After Briar discovered Phoney Bones campaign balloon and mistook him for a Veni Yan Cari, he had his locusts attack the Bone cousins, causing them to be separated and stranded in the Valley for months.
- He tortured Fone Bone, Smiley Bone, the 2 Stupid Rat Creatures, and the orphaned animals with illusions of Kingdok. He tried to possess Fone when he was knocked out only for his locusts to be driven off by the dragon necklace, albeit at the cost of Fone having a piece of the Lord of the Locusts soul trapped in him.
- When Briar botched the ritual to free him with Phoney, he temporarily killed her by pulling the locusts keeping her alive out of her body. While he resurrected her later, it was only so he could send her to capture Thorn to complete the ritual.
- Tried to possess Thorn before Fone drove his locusts away with the dragon necklace, which also caused Thorn to have a piece of the Locust in her too.
- Spread Ghost Circles throughout the Valley, causing hundreds of innocent people to be trapped in the netherworld in a tortured state of living and reducing the Valley to an inhospitable wasteland.
- Had Briar attack the rebuilt city of Atheia and kill everyone in it, all so he could feed off the people’s fear to free himself in Mim’s body.
- After escaping his prison, he tried to use Mim to destroy Atheia and everything else in his path.
