Tim Churley, better known as The Gatekeeper is the central antagonist of Joe Venture. An cosmic-entity scientist and a technology wizard who forced Joebotnik to be in his experiments to test out and research the resourcefulness of a mortal being given magic (as well as Lucas' entertainment). Ever since The Gatekeeper's defeat, he remains as Joe's posthumous archenemy.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • All of his crimes are done of his own accord, meaning the story treats him as an overwhelming threat to the innocent Joebotnik.
  • Ever since day one in 2019, he was summoned by Lucas and Joe's nine bullies of the past, The Gatekeeper vowed to aid Lucas in his goal in torturing Joe as much as they needed him to be, all so everyone in the group and The Gatekeeper can revel in Joebotnik's suffering as a form of "payback".
  • At the beginning of the story Joe Venture, he gave Joebotnik magical powers to test out his experiments The Gatekeeper insisted. It is entirely possible that The Gatekeeper chose to give him powers like immortality so Joe wouldn't remain dead during his goals of torture like harming Joe in any way The Gatekeeper could do, his obsession towards Joebotnik also explains why he didn't think to expand his plans of universal cruelty after the fact.
    1. As a matter of fact, The Gatekeeper also used his magic-tech to control Joe's age and prevent him from getting older. Meaning Joebotnik couldn't age beyond 19-20 for about 60 years, Joebotnik would realistically be a 74 year old if his age wasn't constantly reverted by The Gatekeeper.
  • Although he gave Joebotnik all forms of magic for him to exercise, this does not make him tragic or an Anti-Villain by any means. The Gatekeeper was already a ruthless supervillain before Joe was even given powers due to him wanting to torture Joe anytime he felt like it, and toying with Joe in any way he could. Meaning he held back his powers solely to mess with Joe, overall.
  • In fact, even when The Gatekeeper gave Joe magic and plenty of superpowers, he intentionally limited Joe's ability to wish for a warp hole and access his way home (or to kill The Gatekeeper while Joe was in fictional realms), in order for The Gatekeeper to experiment on Joe and force him into any universe and galaxy The Gatekeeper could access, fictional settings and works Joe is familiar with in real life, but was forced to be put into said locations by The Gatekeeper.
  • Following from this, at any time there's nobody around Joe (or vice-versa), The Gatekeeper would strip Joe away from the dimension/universe he remained in peacefully, and force him back into the same cosmic portal loophole The Gatekeeper kept access to in his lab, which he can manipulate so he could torment Joe in any over-the-top violent way he likes to due to being a giant compared to Joe being as small as a action figure, all to attempt weakening Joe's spirit before sending him to another universe as a routine of his.
  • When Joebotnik tries flying through cosmic portals on his way home throughout the entirety of Joe Venture (until The Grand Finale), The Gatekeeper would always trick and overpower Joe by whacking him with a giant object, using his hovering hands to attack Joe like he's a fly, and sending him into a random dimension by activating a portal to then violently forcing him into another world/universe with a object.
    1. Although he uses his test subjects for his experiments, he shows no concern for any of them, as he frequently abuses Joebotnik with objects The Gatekeeper kept on his table to harm Joe physically whenever the latter accesses a portal that was said to find his way home.
  • While Joe remains in a dimension alone, The Gatekeeper would often gets the enjoyment out of manipulating environments and make some people in said worlds to act awkward, insane, obsessive, clingy and make them do nerve-wracking, antagonistic and mentally taxing things, all so Joebotnik could be put into every single possible predicament to exist, all for The Gatekeeper to record notes of what mortals with resourcefulness could do. Making Joebotnik suffer from a living nightmare that made Joebotnik lose some of his sanity and become a bit dissociative with reality as a result.
    1. On this topic, it slowly shows that The Gatekeeper was responsible for attempting to make elemental disasters happening like in the Fifth Dimension, it's revealed that he was responsible for summoning a lethal cataclysmic storm to make everyone in The Mushroom Kingdom, suffer from fatal injuries and attempted mass murder, presumably, right before Joebotnik hampered this by randomly launching a large hammer to whack said storm and to revive the injured Toads.
  • In the Ninth Dimension, after he gets arrested in 2029 and directly broadcasted of his behavior to every single universe in existence, The Gatekeeper was confirmed of his crimes by the 10th year of torturing Joe, where The Gatekeeper acts weak and when nobody's around, he then tries escapes the prison that should've kept him imprisoned for good. Because of being a Houdini, he somehow manages to flee away from being arrested and then plans on continuing his "research" that he enjoys in Joe's misery and suffering while hiding somewhere unknown (even when he should've been defeated already), as The Gatekeeper pulls out his watch that has the same amount of power that his computer did to pull Joe out of the world he's in, and continue in his sadistic experiments, resulting in Joe going through 50 more years of torture, before Joe had to find a underhanded way to overpower him in The Grand Finale by killing him (the 60th year, mind you).
    1. When Joebotnik spent time with Rachel Roth upon confronting and defeating The Gatekeeper the first time ever. Right when Joe planned to find his way home and reuniting with his parents after spending time with Rachel in her own house for some time, The Gatekeeper escaping with sheer luck in the opportunity and pulling out hidden gadgets he fooled others with somehow, allowed The Gatekeeper to summon a giant hand and grab Joe to strip him away from his parents, making Joebotnik's parents devastated of Joe's direct kidnapping.
  • Despite obsessing with torturing Joebotnik, The Gatekeeper also attempted to use his reality-manipulating magi-technology to torture other people like attempting to squash Princess Peach with a giant hand while she was sleeping with Joebotnik on her own bed in the Fifth Dimension, which gets hampered by Joebotnik preventing it as soon as Joebotnik woke up at the scene, but Joe attempting to escape the universe resulted in The Gatekeeper torturing Joe in the cosmic warp hole The Gatekeeper kept a hold of.
  • He is the only character in the story of Joe Venture, who was treated as a genuinely scary force of nature to be reckoned with and worthy of hate according to Joebotnik, due to The Gatekeeper toying with Joe's hopes and beliefs to return home at any opportunity and tormenting him for it, easily makes him the most despicable villain in the entirety of Joe Venture.
  • He is arguably Joebotnik's most personal enemy next to Lucas Wookville (Joe's childhood rival), as he is always responsible for preventing Joebotnik's goals to return to his home in peace since the very beginning of the story, as The Gatekeeper made Joe go through through 12 multiple, fictional cosmic dimensions and 11 different fictional AI worlds to find his way back home (Joebotnik's stroke of luck for surpassing The Gatekeeper's loopholes was to go through a portal that goes past any radar of cosmic warp holes).
  • Despite working with Joe's nine bullies of the past who were responsible for summoning The Gatekeeper himself by the opportunity to target Joe for their sadistic fun in the first place, this was only for self-serving reasons. Because the powered-up Gatekeeper, eventually became a genie to them who was also something of a threat to both sides of the conflict. Meaning that The Gatekeeper even forced Joe's group of nine bullies, to stay with him as his team of lab partners so they don't end up being tortured test subjects that Joe has become, meaning he enslaved all nine of them too.
    • The Gatekeeper first enslaved his Joe's bullies ever since the Third Dimension. When Lucas and the bullies return to The Gatekeeper's lair after Joebotnik (in a bogeyman persona) had toyed with them for their sadism, because of this, The Gatekeeper gets completely angry at them and forces them all to be scientists who work for him until the end, as a lesson to never betray him ever again.
  • Since he has tortured Joebotnik himself for over 10 years (60 years approximately), it has always been explicit that The Gatekeeper was always making Joe's life a living nightmare due to Joe's bullies summoning him to target Joe in particular, meaning that The Gatekeeper has no shred of remorse for torturing Joebotnik.
  • His crimes solely rely on his moods, as The Gatekeeper would only force Joe into another dimension/universe if he felt like it, so it implies The Gatekeeper was intentional with holding back his powers to proceed with his sadistic obsession with his plans and his research. Although he intended to use Joebotnik's suffering for his own research, education and enjoyment, this is why he doesn't pay attention to what Joe does half of the time.
  • His own arrogance and short-sighted delusions were the result of his downfall, but this also means Joebotnik in the 60th year had to use a cosmic warp hole to time-travel 60 years back in time to 2027, which Larry Titan activated thanks to the Teen Titans' helping Joe on finding his way home as a shortcut to pass The Gatekeeper, and Joe then spawns a lethally blunt object while The Gatekeeper was distracted in sleep and gets killed by Joe as a surprise.
    • Meaning that The Gatekeeper serves as a posthumous person in Joe's life, leaving a impact and a name of glory for how twisted and monstrous he was as a cosmic scientist, this doesn't help that Joebotnik universally spotlighted his arrest in 2029 as mentioned earlier, The Gatekeeper has become infamous to anyone in any universe (ours and in fiction).
