“ | Since time immemorial, I have languished here. The locks are broken. Now I shall tear down the walls between dimension and consume all. | „ |
~ The End after being released from Cyber Space. |
“ | Mortal, you have served your purpose. Now, face your End. I am the all-consuming void. What can one mote of golden light illuminate within the abyss? Countless stars. Countless worlds. Countless lives. All fell to me, all brought to nothing. All the teeming chaos of creation? Brought to order. To neutrality. To nothing. I saw your mind as you ran through my prison. You have fought machines and gods. They were mighty. They were finite. I am infinite. I am nothing. You struggle as so many have done before. You will be consumed like all those before you. I saw your mind. Your courage never wavered. Why? Arrogance? Ignorance? Stupidity? I was contained once. Once. Is that why? My captors bent time and space. My captors built a whole reality to contain me. My captors burnt their souls away to fuel their engines. And you? You glitter. You fly above me like a gnat. I am inevitable. I cannot be denied. You strike this incarnation with all your might. It changes nothing. You are not brave, you are not victorious. No matter what form I take... the End comes for you all! | „ |
~ The End on its immortality and perpetual existence. |
The End, also known as the All-Consuming Void, is the overarching antagonist of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, specifically being the main antagonist of Sonic Frontiers and its DLC The Final Horizon.
It is a nihilistic, god-like entity that traversed the universe and had destroyed the home planet of the Ancients long ago in the past, along with an innumerable amount of other stars, worlds and lives. The destruction of the Ancients' home world had led them to create a new home of residence on the Starfall Islands, where a reflection of their former home planet would be stored into Cyber Space. The End's actions also led to the arrival of the Chaos Emeralds on Earth and, as a result, every problem caused by their existence.
Throughout Sonic's journey across the Starfall Islands, The End is a voice that guides Sonic, though its true motivations are eventually revealed when Sonic briefly gets trapped in between dimensions. Upon the entity achieving its freedom from Cyber Space, it is now able to traverse across dimensions and tear down the very fabric that they consist of, making The End one of the most dangerous and powerful foes that Sonic has ever faced.
In Japanese, it is voiced by Gara Takashima for its female voice and Hōchū Ōtsuka for its male voice. In English, it is voiced by Cindy Robinson for its female voice (who also voiced Queen Beryl in the Viz Dub of the 90s adaptation of Sailor Moon and Slan in the Berserk Golden Age Arc movie) and Mike Pollock for its male voice, who also voiced Mr. Meat in Mr. Meat.
What Makes It Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- While its overall motives and backstory are cryptic and unknown, and despite it being seen as a living embodiment of the concept of death, it shows clear signs of a personality, claiming itself to be beyond anything Sonic has ever fought and being incredibly arrogant and sadistic. This showcases that it is not a Generic Doomsday Villain and has clear moral agency.
- Although its dialogue shows that The End believes its destruction of all creation is "enforcing order and neutrality", it doesn't make it a well-intentioned extremist due to enforcing its own beliefs on to the planets it annihilates. It still takes pride in its many eradications and seemingly doesn't care about the difference between good and evil, preferring to go through with its goals because that's what it believes is right, meaning that The End's destructive goals are simply to fuel its own ego.
- Although its destruction of countless other stars, worlds and planets is offscreen, it doesn't detract from its villainy due to the game showing what happens when it destroys a planet, as shown during the cutscene where it obliterated the Ancients' planet near-instantly with a single laser swipe, and the fact that it intends to continue doing so after it's freed which gives it some onscreen effect.
- According to Ian Flynn, The End's destruction of the Ancients' planet wasn't instantaneous, but that as the Ancients fled the planet, The End "feasted" on their world before giving chase. Therefore, it can be assumed that its destruction of planets is more akin to being near-instantaneous as it briefly takes time to "feast" on the world its destroying. Despite this, it's unclear as to what "feasting" in the context of The End destroying worlds truly means, although it's likely that, given The End's nature, it was absorbing the world's energy to become more powerful and if this is true, then the planet's societies would have suffered right before they finally perished.
- It is considered as one of the vilest villains in the entire Sonic the Hedgehog franchise due to its destruction of countless planets and attempting to destroy all of existence, plus causing the events of the entire series by sending the Chaos Emeralds to Earth, enabling all of the villains who used them to carry out their goals with the only villain that manages to outheinous it being Mephiles the Dark.
- Despite not being as heinous as Mephiles or Solaris, they had some more resources than The End as they have control over time itself and can enter different dimensions, while The End only had access to the universe it was in. Not to mention that it has more of an impact on the series making it stand out regardless.
- It and its legacy will forever haunt the franchise even after its presumed death, as the Chaos Emeralds are still on Earth and will allow for future villains to carry out their goals by using them, not to mention its possible return in the future.
Background[]
- In the past, it destroyed the Ancients' planet and then followed the few remaining in an attempt to drive the species to extinction. This caused it to get trapped in Cyber Space.
- Because the Ancients used the Chaos Emeralds to go to Earth, this makes it responsible for almost all evil in the franchise prior, something it is fully aware of as it knows the previous foes Sonic the Hedgehog fought, most of them having something to do with the Chaos Emeralds, and arrogantly dismissing them as finite while declaring itself infinite, even to the point of considering itself as "nothing”.
- It is indirectly responsible for Chaos' fall to villainy as Pachacamac and the Echidna Clan wanted the Chaos Emeralds from the descendants of the Ancients/Kocos, the Chao, which drove Chaos into insanity and tempted him to destroy the world.
- As a result of the Chaos Emeralds being brought to Earth, The End thus served as a catalyst for various villains throughout the series, who had wanted to exploit the emeralds' powers for their own wrongdoings. These included, but are not limited to, Dr. Eggman, Chaos, Eggman Nega, Black Doom, the Babylon Rogues, Mephiles the Dark and the Deadly Six. Eventually, in one case, this got Eggman's cousin Maria killed and their grandfather Gerald had his life ruined because of this.
- The deaths of Maria and Gerald also caused both the Biolizard and Shadow to try to destroy humanity (the latter of which attempting to do so twice upon his release thanks to Eggman and during Black Doom's 1st return)
- The emeralds also corrupted Emerl, which led to his tragic death in a fight with Sonic. The Time Eater had also drained four of them of their energy.
- While not explicitly stated in the game, The End's continued genocide towards the Ancients while attacking the Earth had also caused a numerous amount of volcanic eruptions on its surface, causing Chaos Island to have a rocky landscape, and undoubtedly causing mass scale damage to the rest of the planet. This can be seen in a cutscene where four of the Ancients (who were the original pilots of the Titans) attempt to confront it, and is hinted at when Tails compares the damage it has caused to that from Dark Gaia, which was able to split the planet apart into seven pieces.
- This would eventually be confirmed by Ian Flynn, who stated that it was intended for this to be stated explicitly, but voice lines pertaining to the incident didn't make the cut.
- Its continued threat towards the Ancients caused Crane to sacrifice himself in order to seal The End within his Titan, SUPREME. During the binding, Crane is shown to be in agony as he writhes in pain before dying due to The End's deadly power, causing the entity to possess the Titan before being locked away in Cyber Space.
Sonic Frontiers[]
- Through its cryptic instructions towards Sonic, it essentially made the Titans, the guardians that were created to protect the island and the Earth from it, and by extension Sage, who had some degree of control over them, appear as the threats to the island, and not itself.
- It takes full advantage of Sonic's altruism and persistence, and Sage's finalistic, calculative personality and initial antagonism towards Sonic and his friends, and nearly uses those qualities of theirs to kill Sonic. It manipulates Sonic into "tearing down the walls between dimensions" by gathering all the Chaos Emeralds and destroying the first three Titans, and deactivating the six towers on Rhea Island, so it can be freed from Cyberspace.
- All the while, Sage, due to her programming and the data from Cyber Space being restricted to outsiders, is unable to tell Sonic about the impending threat, despite her being the only one to know about it. It should also be added that Sage capturing Sonic's friends to exclude external variables in freeing Eggman and protecting the island simultaneously is ultimately what gets him to act in the first place.
- Every time Sonic destroys one of the cages, The End rewards Sonic with a new ability. While Sonic was initially confident that he wasn't getting harmed by the Cyber Energy, The End rewarding him with these abilities had put him into a further sense of false security, as this gives him the idea that it's actually beneficial for him to continue absorbing it.
- After destroying the Cyber Cages and shutting down the towers, Sonic absorbs so much Cyber-Energy that he gets corrupted and nearly dies while being left paralyzed and having his soul trapped in Cyber Space as he becomes stuck between realities (which could be a fate worse than death while dying at the same time). Sonic is also shown to be in a lot of pain, as he was barely able to stand after freeing Tails from a Cyber Cage and defeating the third Titan.
- Upon being freed, it attempted to destroy all of existence without any hesitation.
- It claimed to have destroyed a countless number of planets and stars and claimed countless amounts of lives during the final battle of hard mode in the base game with no remorse.
- It proceeds to blow itself up to take out Sonic, Sage and the Earth after losing out of pure spite, resulting in Sage sacrificing herself to contain the blast. Had Eggman not been able to revive Sage using the Ancients' technology, Sage would've been permanently dead.
- It sadistically alters the perception of others to have its true form appear as a visual representation of what they perceive to be death.
The Final Horizon[]
- Amy, Tails, and Knuckles absorb the Cyber-Energy which causes all of them immense pain because of it's release.
- After defeating SUPREME in the update, it hijacks the downed Titan in another attempt to kill Sonic and using the Titan as its avatar. As it doing this, Supreme is also visually in extreme pain and suffers erasure of mind (In spite of the Titan actively trying to resist THE END's Control), due to the transformation.
- It launches a barrage of energy blasts at an defenseless Eggman and Sage, Tails, Knuckles and Amy who are struggling to protect themselves just to spite Sonic, after Eggman and Sage acquired Supreme's Cannon with Sonic's help.
Trivia[]
- Voice lines found in the game files for Sonic Frontiers seems to indicate that it was intended for Sonic to lose his memories after absorbing enough Cyber Energy. One such voice line was "My name is... my name is?". If this potentially unused data was in the game, it would've made The End even worse as it caused Sonic to absorb enough Cyber Energy to cause this in the first place.
- Its Japanese dub version does not count as Pure Evil due to being a genuine extremist who believes that living is suffering, as well as showing respect towards Sonic during its final moments.
