~ Dollmaker taunting Quentin Lance after killing another victim. |
Barton Mathis, also known as the Dollmaker, is a minor yet pivotal antagonist in Season 2 of the TV series Arrow, appearing as the main antagonist of the episode "Broken Dolls" and a flashback antagonist in the episode "State v. Queen".
He is a psychopathic and misogynistic serial killer who was locked up by Quentin Lance before escaping from Iron Heights during the Undertaking thanks to Count Vertigo. The Dollmaker's modus operandi consists of kidnapping women, killing them, and dressing up their corpses as porcelain dolls.
He was portrayed by Michael Eklund.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- His behavior around every woman he encountered was perverse, and he always "complimented" their skin, heavily hinting that he viewed every woman as a potential victim. This suggestion is supported by how he was willing to turn Laurel into a doll despite her skin "having too much melanin," and he didn't even know what Canary's skin was like despite still admiring it.
- His crimes developed a reputation where he was regarded as Starling City's worst serial killer, and Count Vertigo, a fellow Pure Evil villain, was such a fan that he let him out during the Undertaking.
- Whenever he killed a woman, he enjoyed the sound of the polymer slowly hardening and suffocating them.
- He stands out amongst all other Pure Evil villains within the franchise given the horrendousness of his crimes, his lack of remorse, and also having less resources.
- During his first kill spree, every three days he stalked eight young women who used "Mermaiden" skin cream before kidnapping them, killing them, and dressing them up like porcelain dolls while displaying them in Starling City.
- He killed his victims by forcibly pouring a "flexible polymer" down their throats and slowly suffocating them.
- After escaping, he killed another young woman with his same M.O., making it his ninth victim.
- After kidnapping his tenth victim, he forced Quentin Lance to listen over the phone as he killed her.
- He attempted to kidnap Felicity Smoak, who was on a stakeout trying to lure him.
- While escaping from Lance and the Arrow, he ambushed Lance and tried to kill him with his own gun before being stopped by the Arrow.
- He kidnapped Quentin and his daughter Laurel while killing a precinct guard, and he fled with them.
- He attempted to kill Laurel the same way he killed his other victims while forcing Quentin to watch in an effort to destroy his soul.
- Upon being attacked by the Canary, he pinned her with pipes and made an approach to unmask and kill her before being stopped by the Arrow.
- Despite only appearing in one episode and being killed off, his actions had an impact on Laurel, who suffered from P.T.S.D., turned to alcoholism, and became a drug addict.
