The Dog is the main antagonist of the 2017 horror VR video game, Duck Season, a homage to the game, Duck Hunt.
Serving as the deuteragonist of the in-universe game, The Dog is seemingly a friendly and playful but distracting ally, similar to the original Dog from Duck Hunt. However, after being shot, the Dog lets his true intentions start to shine through.
His vocal effects were provided by Sam Gorski, who did vocal effects for The Chairman in The Ghost and Molly McGee.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- While other endings paint the Dog in a seemingly brighter light (such as the Fiesta ending, or the hidden Dog Ending), the Canon Ending is confirmed to be the true ending to the game, thus the Dog's actions from those endings aren't canon or real, which means none of them actually happened in the story.
- As the Dog only begins to harass David after being shot by him, it is debatable whether the Dog is truly only angry because he got shot. However, the gun in-game doesn't seem to actually physically hurt him. Once he is shot, the Dog will simply wave his finger as a disapproving sound plays, before the game continues to play normally. Even if that's not the case, his acts still aren't justified given the fact he doesn't just gruesomely murder the person that shot him. Rather, he murders their entire families. It's highly likely, given his bloodthirsty nature, that he is baiting the players into shooting him, especially due to the fact he seemingly targets kids alone, as Duck Season is marketed towards children.
- Before the events of Duck Season, The Dog was originally simply a cryptid in the Voidway that wanted to escape. However, after Kingbit discovered the Voidway and utilized him, the cryptid manifested into a cursed Duck Season cartridge, manifesting himself into the form of the game's mascot and deuteragonist, The Dog, so he could escape the Voidway temporarily once the game was opened. This cartridge would later become a rental. Before David received the cartridge, he would go on a killing spree, murdering multiple families, and even recording the moments before he killed a little boy (sent to David on a tape labelled "12") who was playing his game.
- Throughout David's playthrough of Duck Season, he would stalk him, presumably be the one responsible for David's weird dream after Level 3, as he is seen dancing in the kitchen during the dream, as once David wakes up, that's when David's mom states that she can't find the kitchen knife, further implying the Dog had distracted David.
- After Level 6, the Dog is seen recording David from the window, and once he's spotted, he quickly flees the scene, after which sending David the "12" tape to reveal his agenda.
- During the next level of the game, the Dog is nowhere to be seen, with the rounds progressing past 3 as the ducks behave strangely. Once David turns around in the virtual world, the Dog reveals itself to be behind him in the real world, ducking behind the couch. Once David reenters the Real World, he leaves a message for David on the TV, stating "WHERE'S MOM?". Once David turns around, it is revealed the Dog had brutally murdered David's mother, leaving her as a bloodied mess. He then prompts David to face him in one last round of Duck Season.
- In "COME FACE ME.", The Dog sends demonic dogs and the dead ducks after David so they can damage the TV and leave David stranded in the TV forever. Once they fail, the Dog himself becomes huge and tries to break the TV. However, he is defeated by David.
- Once David is brought back into the real world at midnight, the Dog decides to take matters into his own paws, intruding into the house with the bloodied kitchen knife as he tries to kill David directly. However, David shoots him numerous times with the Light Gun, causing The Dog to convulse and burst.
- David is shown to be traumatized by the Dog's actions, as he calls the police to report his mother's death. However, realizing he would be considered the culprit, he is forced to hang up, bury his own mother, and run away from the house (with the lyrics in the ending's accompanying song, "The Season", confirming this), effectively meaning the Dog had ruined the child's life, even if he had died in the process.
