“ | From his mid-breast forth issued from the ice. And better with a giant I compare than do the giants with those arms of his. Consider now how great must be that whole, which unto such a part conforms itself. Were he as fair once, as he now is foul, and lifted up his brow against his Maker, well may proceed from him all tribulation. What a marvel it appeared to me, when I beheld three faces on his head! ~ Alighieri describing the Devil. |
Lucifer (also called The Devil, Dis, Satan, and Belzebù) is the main antagonist in the Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri's epic story.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He tried to usurp God, sparking a war in Heaven.
- Though he once was a powerful seraph and the closest one to God, he was eventually corrupted by envy and pride.
- This version of the Devil spontaneously chooses to rebel against God, and his being corrupted by pride was genuine and not predicted by God's plan (unlike the original version of the Devil).
- Created Hell, one of the most horrible and painful places on Earth to exist, with his fall.
- He is the cause of the existence of evil and sin.
- He influenced Eve to eat the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, causing the Fall of Man.
- Corrupted humanity into sin.
- Condemned humans to painful lives by stripping away the privileges they had before the Fall of Man.
- Eternally tortures the sinners by making them suffer terrible pain. Just to list two of the tortures he performed: (for the greedy and the spendthrift) forcing them to fight each other for eternity and (for the hypocrites) walking with golden cloaks heavy as lead while crushing with their feet Caiaphas, the rabbi who advised the Pharisees to condemn Jesus.
- Eats the souls of the traitors.
- While people in Hell mostly deserved their fates, it is obvious that Satan himself was the reason why they are all sinful, considering that he created sin.
