Thomasin White, also known later as The Butcher, is the main antagonist of American Horror Story: Roanoke, the sixth season within the horror anthology TV series. She is the leader of an undead mob that she uses to maintain control over the Roanoke lands and will kill anyone who sets foot onto it, even if they're merely innocent folk moving into a house on it. This would lead her in conflict with the Shelby-Miller family, whom she would terrorize and try to kill.

She was portrayed by Susan Berger while in the re-enactment scenes of My Roanoke Nightmare, she was portrayed by Kathy Bates.

What Makes Her Pure Evil?[]

  • While she was banished from the colony she was in charge of by insurgents into a forest where she would starve and nearly get killed by a pig, this does not hold up due to not only her bringing this on herself by denying their request to help the colony move inwards due to the people starving, but this isn't even the excuse for her actions as after killing off The Insurgents upon returning to the colony with the help of Scathach, she would later on go on too commit actions out of a desire to maintain her control over the Roanoke lands like killing her own colony just for opposing her sacrificing members of them to Scathach and also killing whoever does so little as to set foot onto her lands whilst deeming them "trespassers" just to maintain control, making her motive a selfish one rather than a sympathetic one.
  • After being banished from the colony by the insurgents who overthrew her for denying their request to venture inland to survive and not helping them get real food other than the colony's gruel due to the people starving and saved by Scathach from starving and thirsting by being fed a pig's heart, she kills the people who overthrew her upon returning by piercing one in the head with her knife and slitting another's throat. She nearly considers killing her son, Ambrose, too, but decides not to, telling him that had he not been birthed of her own treacherous flesh, she would cut his throat and hurl him into bloody damnation before ordering him not to defy her again before venturing the colony inland.
  • She would begin performing sacrifices under Scathach's name by taking members of the colony and ramming stones into their heads to kill them, with not even children being exempt from this, a child being the first example shown in fact.
  • After Matt and Shelby moved into the house on her lands, the Butcher would terrorize them, starting off by drowning Shelby in the hot tub she was relaxing in outside the house, then following it up by putting a dead pig with blood on it on their doormat and having members of her ghostly mob haunt them or terrorize them within the house from time to time by attacking them, with the one doing the most often being the member with a pig head on his head, decorating the inside of the house with strawmen that seem to resemble her previous victims.
  • It is revealed through footage played on the TV within the basement of the house that she had the member with a pig head on his head terrorize and attack one of the previous owners of the house named Dr. Elias Cunningham.
  • She tricked Shelby into following her into the woods after tricking her into thinking she had rammed her car into her where Shelby would come across lots of more small strawmen hanging above the trees similar to the ones in the house and then be ambushed by her undead mob who would cause her to scream and panic upon coming towards her, with the Butcher then claiming that she is the queen of every hive, the fire of every hill, the shield over every head, the spear of battle, and the tree and the lightning that strikes it while a flashback plays over of her butchering one of her previous victims.
  • She then proceeds to kill a deserter found at the edge of the wood with her and the mob's provisions stolen from the storehouse while saying that justice demands penance for his betrayal and calling him a cloven beast rotting in the mire and muck as unclean as his unfestering soul by burning him alive above fire with a pig head on his head to "purify" him.
  • When she spots Shelby witnessing the act, she orders her mob to seize her, likely to kill her.
  • When Shelby comes through the forest with Matt again after hearing something, they spot a pig's head crucified to a pole with organs hanging from below from the Butcher's doing, likely the man Shelby saw be burned alive.
  • She would then terrorize Lee by hanging organs that are wiggling about on a wall and having the member with a pig head on its head scare her.
  • Through another footage that Shelby and Matt come across, it is revealed there even more how the Butcher had been terrorizing Dr. Elias Cunningham by showing him horrible things, having her mob physically scar him, and then attacking him once more when he returned into the house.
  • She has a pig's head and limbs be ripped off to replace the head with Flora's doll's head (having kidnapped Flora) and the limbs with the limbs of the doll, likely to taunt Matt, Shelby, and Lee.
  • When Cricket, a paranormal investigator who has come to help Matt, Shelby, and Lee, performs a ritual with the three to try to talk to Priscilla, the Butcher appears instead, telling her that she will protect the place they're in, declaring it to be hers and that she shall stack bodies high as cordwood, threatening her. When asked if she had taken Flora, she tells them that had she had her, she would have had her be flayed and roasted by then.
  • She has a pig-headed member attack and terrorize Matt and Shelby in their house only for that to be foiled by Dr. Elias Cunningham temporarily taking him down with an axe before expelling him from the room by shouting "Croatoan."
  • She vandalized the paintings of Edward Felipe Mott (the one who had completed the house on her lands), prompting him to lock a few people into a cellar for not confessing to the "crime" due to the deep mental obsession he has with them. This makes her indirectly responsible for their deaths as they would have starved to death in their due to Edward being unable to release them after being killed by her.
  • She killed Edward Felipe Mott, the one who completed the house on her lands, by having her mob impale him in the chest with a sharp wooden pole and hanging him above fire to be horrifically burned alive.
  • In 1952, she had three hunters kill each other through something that made them turn their rifles on each other and blow their heads off.
  • She and her mob killed the Chen family in 1973 when they were residing in the house on her lands by throwing a knife at the father's head before killing the rest (though it's unknown how she killed the rest).
  • She killed Miranda and Bridget Jane by breaking into the house when they were residing in it, having her mob capture them, and then having the mob brutally kill one of them by pulling her limbs apart as the other watches in horror before killing the other by decapitating her with her knife. While they were sadistic nurses who tortured and killed several patients making them Asshole Victims, the Butcher wasn't killing them for how evil they were, but only for happening to be on her lands, allowing this act to contribute to her heinousness.
  • It is revealed that she had caused many deaths and disappearances around the same time of year in October during the 6-day period when the blood moon arises as that is the only time she and the mob can kill, with this going back decades.
  • When Shelby, Matt, and Elias go into the woods to encounter the mob to talk to Priscilla to get Flora back, she has someone fire arrows onto Elias, nearly getting him killed before having the mob attack Matt and Shelby.
  • When Cricket attempts to bargain with her, the Butcher tells him that he shall not receive another warning, her interest in bartering has ended along with her mercy, and that all power now comes from the moon.
  • After Ambrose openly showed objection towards the sacrifices she performed under Scathach's name and for welcoming Scathach to their colony in spite of her being an evil witch and declared that he and the colony shall return from whence they came and await the governor's ships to take them home, declaring it mutiny, as per Scathach's instructions, she hosts a feast for them all under the guise of having changed her ways and as a token of repentance with apples she gives to them also serving as that when the apples were in fact poisoned, causing them all to begin coughing to death, with Thomasin proceeding to directly kill them herself by piercing them or slashing their throats with her knife, the first one being her own son, Ambrose, before allowing Scathach to slit her throat and kill her in order to have their souls enslaved to her and make them her servants for eternity.
  • Upon arriving at the house, the Butcher attempts to kill Flora in front of them only for Priscilla to push Flora away, allowing her to run to Matt and Shelby before smacking Priscilla, calling her an "evil child."
  • She then proceeds to gruesomely kill Cricket as Shelby, Matt, and Flora watch from their window by piercing his guts and then having members of her mob disembowel him by pulling out his organs with a hook as he yells with pain before pointing her knife to Shelby, Matt, and Flora to let them know they were next.
  • She then has members of her mob go into the house while having Ambrose try to break into the house to try to kill them, though they end up temporarily escaping with the help of the ghost of Edward Felipe Mott.
  • It is revealed by Mama Polk that her kin made a deal with her 200 years ago that so long as she can consecrate the land with blood every year, she will leave them in peace, while confirming that in some years they provide the sacrifice, increasing her body count as well.
  • After Mama Polk delivered Matt, Shelby, and Flora to her as sacrifices, the Butcher attempted to kill Flora first in front of them, intending to kill them afterwards, only to be stopped in this by Ambrose, who, out of nowhere, foils this attempt by taking her into the fire with him, allowing Matt, Shelby, and Flora to have enough time to escape from the scene with Lee's help.
  • After the cast that had made the TV show based off of Matt and Shelby's experience at the house returned to the house with them to film more scenes for their show, the Butcher had one of the cast killed on the first day by having one of her mob's members kill him by mutilating him with a chainsaw.
  • When Diana tries to escape the place after what happened to said cast member, the Butcher has the pig-headed member get into her car and kill her by jumpscaring her to cause her to crash the car.
  • She has the pig-headed member terrorize Audrey a bit by scaring her when she comes out of the shower.
  • Upon arriving at the house where the cast members are in with her mob, she coldly kills Agnes by piercing her head with her knife, likely for impersonating her.
  • She then has members of her mob get into the house and try to kill Dominic and Shelby whilst trying to break in herself with Matt and Shelby ending up getting into a room to avoid getting killed. The pig-headed member would end up killing Dominic after Lee shuts him out, making her responsible for his death.
  • She kills another guy by piercing him in the guts and pulling out his organs, essentially disemboweling him.
  • After Lee, who is heavily implied to be possessed by Scathach, captures Sophie and Milo and brings them to the Butcher, the Butcher has members of the mob impale them as Lee announces who the Butcher is like how she was announced in the TV show before having them be burnt alive.
  • When a group of paranormal investigators enters the house to get footage of the paranormal activity inside, she has members of her mob kill them starting with the pig-headed member slashing one of them.
  • She then directly kills another herself by slashing her and another by throwing her knife at them.
  • She then has arrows be shot at the last one along with a couple of cops who have arrived at the scene with other cops.
  • After Lee sacrifices herself and gets the house blown up so that no one else will afford it to get themselves killed by the Butcher and for Flora to go home, the Butcher proceeds to kill the rest of the cops remaining at the place with her mob and ends up getting away with her actions in the end, effectively becoming a Karma Houdini in the aftermath.
  • While there are spectulations that the Butcher has moral agency issues because people who ate the heart of Scathach is posessed by her, there are no indication that she gettting controlled is permanent, and Thomasyn is capable of manipulating things in her own favor. Furthermore, even before Scathach's involvement, She was already evil.
