Szayel Aporro Granz is a major antagonist in the Bleach franchise.
He was a mad scientist and the Eighth Espada within Sōsuke Aizen's military and believed that he was the perfect life form. 14 years after his death, he escaped hell just to engulf the world of the livings to hell as well wanted to seek revenge on those who are responsible for his death. He is the arch-nemesis of Mayuri Kurotsuchi and Renji Abarai.
He was voiced by Kōsuke Toriumi in Japanese, who has voiced Gyokko in Demon Slayer, and by Benjamin Diskin in English, who also voiced Venom in The Spectacular Spider-Man and Shouichi Shinkawa/Death Gun/XaXa in Sword Art Online.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
Background[]
- In the past when he was a human, he was behind torturing and murdering multiple people through his unethical experiments.
- He helped Nnoitra Gilga take down Nel and her underlings.
Arrancar arc[]
- When his brother, Yylfordt Granz was killed in battle by the Soul Reapers, Szayel Aporro told Renji that his brother was useless and that he was not fighting Renji to avenge his deceased brother.
- He was shown to murder his subordinates by consuming them to empower himself. It is unclear how many he consumed, but he admitted to doing this for a long period of time.
- He tortured Uryu Ishida and Renji Aburai by rupturing their organs one at a time.
- He said that he wished that Aizen would kill off all life that is not Arrancar or Hollow.
- He attempted to torture Mayuri Kurotsuchi the same way he did to Uryu and Renji.
- When he was seemingly killed by Mayuri’s Zanpakuto, the Divine Cutter Jizo, Szayel Aporro laid an egg inside Nemu Kurotsuchi's body and used her as a means to revive himself. The process left Nemu emaciated, in pain, and on the verge of death.
- He told Mayuri that he was the perfect life-form because he had the power to revive himself. This showed Szayel Aporro's narcissism and egotism. Also, it showed that despite following Aizen, he saw himself as a being greater than him or anyone else.
- While his death was horrific as he was impaled in a way where it would take hundreds of years for a sword to pierce his heart due to his altered time perception, it wasn't played for sympathy considering the nature of his atrocities.
Hell arc[]
- In the No Breathes from Hell One-Shot, he attacked Ichigo and the Gotei 13 Lieutenants alongside several Jigoku no Gaki which results in Fourth Division Lieutenant Kiyone being severely injured.
- He injures Renji with his chains and tries to kill his daughter Ichika right in front of him.
- He intends to kill both Uryu Ishida and Mayuri Kurotsuchi (his killer).
- Gloats about his title as Warden of Hell and tries to instill despair into Ichigo over deceased Gotei 13 Captains being sent off to hell after their deaths including Ukitake, Yamamoto, and Unohana.
Trivia[]
- He and Shrieker are the only two canon Bleach villains to be approved for Pure Evil.
- He is also the only Espada (and the only Arrancar) to be Pure Evil.
