“ | My soldiers, my sons. Many of you have heard of me in late-night whispering but I assure you, I am not a myth. I am real and I stand before you with one simple truth: the strong shall rule the weak. Long ago, I was viciously attacked by the coward Lyze of Kiel for defending that truth. Now I wear this mask to conceal my scars but the metal is strong. It is a symbol of the Pure Ones' strength and resolve. It is time to set a fire that will consume the Owl Kingdoms and take back what is rightfully ours. Because we are Tytos! We are Pure Ones! And I am Metal Beak! | „ |
~ Surtr addressing the Pure Ones and his plans. |
Surtr, more commonly known as Metal Beak, is the main antagonist of the 2010 film Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, which is based on the Guardians of Ga'Hoole novel series by Kathryn Lasky. In this version, Metal Beak and Kludd are separate characters, and he is the leader of the Pure Ones who wish to dominate and enslave all of the owl kingdoms that are not part of the Tyto class.
He was voiced by Joel Edgerton.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He made it his ideal that the Tyto class was the strongest owl species, and thus desired to conquer all of the other owl kingdoms. However, he was willing to kill another Tyto if they ever stood up against him, thus making him a hypocrite in addition to being a hegemonic fascist.
- He had hundreds of owlets enslaved and "moonblinked", a process when an owl tries to stare at the moon for too long and collapses unconscious out of exhaustion, forgetting his or her identity upon waking up.
- After the owlets are moonblinked, Surtr has them put under horrific conditions where they are forced to pick up metal flecks and take them to the bats to set up a trap for the Guardians and kill them. The magnetic blue energy from these flecks tortures the owlets and drains them of their strength, thus weakening their gizzards.
- It turns out that the sole purpose for the moonblinked and enslaved owlets was to set up a trap for the Guardians in order to slaughter them all. In one fell swoop, he would have achieved his ultimate goal of subjugating all of the owl kingdoms under the fascist rule of the Pure Ones.
- During one of his war campaigns, he had the Pure Ones kidnap Grimble's family simply because the latter fought back against them, promising him the safety of his family if he joined the Pure Ones. However, there is never any indication that Metal Beak ever left them unharmed nor kept his word.
- He conspired with a traitor from within the Guardians named Allomere, promising him the position of the King of the Great Tree in exchange for leading the Guardians into the same trap the bats and enslaved owlets were constructing for them.
- After Allomere led the Guardians into the trap, Surtr had Nyra summon hundreds of bats to kill off both the Guardians and the moonblinked owlets they were shielding by having them drained of their blood.
- He shows no care towards Allomere, as Surtr breaks his promise towards him by leaving the traitorous owl to be dragged to death by his bats. He does so all while egotistically telling him that there is room for only one king, referring to himself.
- He attempted to force Soren to watch as Ezylryb, who held the title of "Lyze of Kiel", was about to be slain by Nyra, as he knew that Ezylryb was both Soren's personal hero and mentor.
- Although Nyra was horrified upon seeing that Soren killed her husband, it only shows that she cared about Surtr that was not reciprocated by him. He treated her as a second-in-command instead of an equal and refrained from giving her any armor like he did with his Pure One soldiers.
- In summary, Surtr was a cruel and egotistical tyrant who only cared about himself alongside his fanatical desire to dominate all of the owl kingdoms under his belief that "the strong shall rule the weak."
Trivia[]
- It is heavily implied that Surtr had already broken his promise to Grimble without his knowledge by harming or even killing his family in a horrific fashion; this is given how he broke his promise to Allomere about letting him rule over Ga'Hoole. However, this is only Fridge Horror as it was never explicitly stated, but even without that, Surtr still crosses the extra mile by other means.
