No! She's a weapon, my weapon! And it's taken me years to get her back!
~ Erickson about Samantha Wilkes.
The man who tore you from your mother's womb and you want to save him? Adorable.
~ Erickson to Samantha Wilkes about saving Dr. Brandyworth.

Steven Erickson is the main antagonist of the Invincible: Atom Eve prequel comics and its animated adaptation, as well as a major antagonist in the Brit comics.

He is a high-ranking official of the Global Defense Agency who performed questionable experiments on multiple children, being directly responsible for all of Samantha Wilkes' childhood trauma, making him her archenemy.

He was voiced by the late Lance Reddick, who also voiced General Lunaris from DuckTales and Thordak in The Legend of Vox Machina.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • He kept Samantha's biological mother, Polly, confined and intended to kidnap her daughter to use for his experiments to make a human weapon for the government.
  • He spent a decade trying to hunt down and enslave Elias Brandyworth for rescuing Samantha as a baby, causing him to have to remain homeless to stay off grid.
  • Using the DNA from the brain-dead Polly, he forced Rodgers (despite his seeming discomfort) to perform horrific experiments on four more children (possibly via forcibly impregnating her in her state), keeping them in tubes their entire lives, refusing to give them names, identities or teach them to speak and giving them an overall Fate Worse than Death.
  • He threatened to put Rodgers in the tube and experiment on him if he didn't show satisfying results from the experiments.
  • He sent his experiments to track down Samantha, which resulted in them causing destruction around town and endangering people, then indirectly had them die trying to kill Samantha.
  • He and his men kidnapped Elias and Samantha, showing them the brain-dead Polly as if to mock them.
  • When Eve lunges at him, he tries to shoot her but instead accidentally shoots Polly and Elias, killing both of them. This permanently ruins Eve's life as she lost her entire family.
  • He planned to force Brandyworth to run experiments on more children when his plans failed.
  • Years later, he attempts to kidnap and dissect the superhero Brit to make replicas of him for combat purposes.
  • Although he does work for the Government, who usually fulfill a heroic role and are portrayed as morally questionable extremists who stop dangerous threats at worst, nothing suggests that he has any altruistic motives in his actions. He is only ever portrayed as a power-hungry and arrogant man desiring to satisfy his ego through his accomplishments.
    • Furthermore, in the comics, even Cecil Steadman found him to be a deplorable human and was satisfied when Brit killed him off. This shows his actions likely weren’t even in the best interests of the Global Defence Agency and he just did them for selfish reasons.
  • While the Heinous Standards of Invincible are massive, with planetary genocide being a common crime, he is able to stand out with much less resources than many of the super-powered villains, being a simple government official, and his horrifying experiments on children make him unique.
    • Although D. A. Sinclair also experimented on people while having less resources and more victims, Erickson is able to stand out given his younger test subjects and longer lasting effects whereas Sinclair’s experiments usually die quickly or can be fixed by the government. He also sticks out for his overall personal villainy towards Eve, even more so than Omni-Man towards Mark.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only character from the animated series to be Pure Evil as Thragg hasn’t been introduced yet and Omnipotus is significantly less heinous than his comic counterpart.
  • He is based on William Stryker, another Pure Evil.
