| “ | You're a hundred percent right, Jenna. I- I - wasn't thinking about those children. The important thing here is to get the medicine through and that's just what I'm gonna do. (turns to Balto) And when I come back, I'm gonna fold you five ways and leave you for a cat toy. | „ |
| ~ Steele telling Jenna that he intends to retrieve the medicine only for the glory. |
| “ | Go ahead, wolf-dog! You'll never get home! I'll make sure of that! | „ |
| ~ Steele planning to sabotage Balto's trail to prevent him from returning (revealing that he is willing to let the sick children die). |
Steele is the main antagonist of the animated 1995 Amblin Entertainment film Balto.
He is an egotistical Alaskan Malamute with an extremely mean streak, taking excessive pride in his popularity amongst both the village humans and the dogs. He is the arch-nemesis of Balto, who he likes bullying for his part-wolf heritage.
In the English version, he was voiced by Jim Cummings, who also voiced Dr. Robotnik in Sonic SatAM, Rasputin's singing voice in Anastasia, Jacques in Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island, Fusilli in Courage the Cowardly Dog, Budzo in Zambezia and Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat: The Journey Begins. In the Japanese dub, Steele is voiced Isao Sasaki, who is known for singing many retro anime and tokusatsu openings such as Daiku Maryu Gaiking, UFO Grendizer and Kamen Rider.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Although he's a dog, Steele has clear moral agency and knows perfectly well how to differentiate between good and evil, and does evil voluntarily.
- He repeatedly bullied Balto over his part-wolf heritage.
- He stole a string of sausages to treat Jenna out for dinner with, then framed Balto for his crimes just as the butcher and a man with a flashlight dropped in to investigate. Unaware of what really happened, the butcher rewarded Steele with the sausages that he stole.
- While he agreed to deliver medicine to sick children, he did so not for the children but for the glory he would receive if he pulled it off.
- He sabotaged Balto’s trail back with the medicine, uncaring about the fact that the sick children will die without it, purely out of spite for Balto being placed on his team. In the film,a scene is shown where Balto observes that Mr. Johansen makes wooden coffins, confirming that, indeed, without the medicine they were going to die.
- Out of pure lust, tried to make Jenna his wife, while having no regard of her feelings.
- He lied about Balto and the rest of the team dying in the blizzard, which led the other dogs to realize how cruel he really is after Jenna, who immediately noticed his deception, called him out for it.
- He attempted to kill Balto to prevent him from taking the medicine.
- His actions earn him the hatred of everyone around him, which heavily implies he’ll die alone.
- While he had some comedic moments in the first half of film, they don't make him less horrible and he loses them completely in the second half.
Trivia[]
- There is a deleted scene where he tries to attack Balto again out of anger in the ending when he refuses to give up his golden collar (which didn't appear in the film) which resulted in the other sled dogs turning on him and attacking him as well which then results in his death but it was cut for being too dark for children.
- However, even if this scene could be in film, it couldn't make Steele a scapegoat, as his death isn't played for any kind of sympathy.
