“ | Sonny: Well, if it ain't Hawkeye and the Ten Rings! Welcome aboard. Uh-uh-uh, now you're gonna wanna drop those guns. And you, Ten Rings? Why don't you lower those fists of fury? Wouldn't want a party foul to ruin this little guest's good time. Shang-Chi: Who are you? Where's the Hood? Where's my sister? Sonny: Haha! I'm so-- Look at me, boys. Uh, my apologies. My name is Sonny Burch. I'm a proud investor in the bright, new future the Hood's building. Hawkeye: "Bright future", huh? Doesn't look so bright for your prisoners back there. Sonny: Prisoners? Ahaha. No. No, no. You got it all wrong. You see, this here is a train of liberation, and those fine folks? Well, they've been conscripted into a force that's gonna change the world. Shang-Chi: Conscription doesn't sound like freedom to me. Sonny: Free market in action. A little economic principle I like to call "supply and demand". I supply 'em, and they do what I demand. |

~ Sonny introducing himself and justifying his trafficking operations. |
Sonny Burch is the secondary antagonist in the What If...? episode "What If... 1872?".
In this alternate reality, Sonny was a human trafficker who uses a special pocket watch made from Russia that is designed with a hypnosis technique, which he uses to lure in and trap unsuspecting victims in a frozen trance. Recruited by the Hood and her gang, Sonny goes off hypnotizing villagers and Chinese immigrants, collecting them in order to make profitable income out of selling them to slave labor.
He was voiced by Walton Goggins.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- It's implied that he's done a number of side jobs, heists, and conspiracies in order to get as wealthy as possible.
- Obtained a specialized pocket watch installed with a hypnotic lullaby from a side job he did from Russia that allows him to hypnotize people in a frozen trance, all while implied to still be conscious over the brainwashing sequences, arguably making this a fate worse than death.
- Upon joining the Hood and her gang, he handles hypnotizing hundreds of Chinese immigrants from dozens of villages and luring them inside the Ghost Train, regularly having them sold to slave labor under conditions of his "supply and demand" policy.
- Killed the parents of Kate Bishop, Derek and Eleanor, in cold-blood from implications that they stopped funding him and his operations. Thus, leaving Kate orphaned and becoming Hawkeye.
- Hypnotized the villagers of Point Pegasus and have lured inside the Ghost Train to be sold for slavery.
- Manipulated Shang-Chi and Kate Bishop (Hawkeye) into meeting the Hood all while ordering the death of their child companion, Kwai Jun-Fan, behind their backs. Jun-Fan would've been met from being pulled off the train if not for Uatu the Watcher's intervention.
- Uatu implicates he's seen scenarios similar to Jun-Fan's fate over and over again, meaning there are other versions of Sonny who ordered the same hit where the child dies.
- Takes sadistic joy over the Hood pummeling and nearly beating Shang-Chi to death.
- Uses his pocket watch to hypnotize and kill Kate Bishop, all while revealing to be her parents' murderer, through using her mother's pistol as a cruel act of 'poetry'. Admitting he is a man who likes to enjoy his kills.
- While at first introduced as seemingly polite and well-meant, it's nothing more than a facade underneath his greedy, sadistic nature.
- Unlike the Hood - who is revealed to be Xu Xialing - who had sympathetic intentions of liberating the Chinese immigrants and bring them freedom, Sonny, unaware of the former's true motives, is personally driven by greed and continues on with the trafficking operations as long as it pays him.
- Unlike his Sacred Timeline counterpart, who is played for laughs and a standard villain, this version of Sonny is an utterly heinous human trafficker who is chillingly dreaded as a serious threat and lacks the comedic elements as the original.
