“ | Who you calling dummy, dummy? | „ |
~ Slappy's catchphrase |
“ | Karru Maru Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano | „ |
~ The chant that brings Slappy to life |
Slappy the Dummy is a major recurring antagonist in the Goosebumps franchise created by R.L. Stine, serving as the main antagonist of the Night of the Living Dummy saga. He is a sinister wood puppet who intends to curse others into being puppets. He is an inanimate object until someone reads the chant "Karru Marri Odonna Loma Molonu Karrano" (stored in his suit pocket on a piece of paper), which makes him come alive.
In the books, Slappy would be brought to life by his owners who either find him or buy him. Once alive, he begins causing havoc around his owner's life resulting in them being blamed for all of the stuff. He does this so then he could turn them into his slaves. Luckily, he is soon defeated by either being broken or going back to sleep.
Slappy also has his own series called SlappyWorld where he is the narrator of the story and also the main antagonist. Despite being the main antagonist of most of the books he's in, he also becomes the main protagonist or an anti-hero by saving the main protagonists of the story.
In the TV series, he was portrayed by Annick Obonsawin in three episodes as her first villainous role, and Cal Dodd in two others.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- He tries to make every human he meets his slave.
- Is well aware of the fact that he is evil and goes out of his way to make others miserable because he enjoys it. He finds the act of doing a good deed repulsive.
- Is very mean-spirited and constantly insults people over things such as their weight.
- While mostly a malicious prankster and bully, Slappy has also attempted to kill people throughout the books, such as attempting to decapitate two children in Slappy New Year.
Books[]
- Did things such as slapping Amy's father on the cheek, ruining a birthday party by squeezing the birthday girl's hand until it was red and sore, and trashing Sara's bedroom and painting, so Amy would be blamed. Tried to enslave Amy when no one would believe her. Told her he could ruin her life and get her locked up in a mental ward if she didn't obey him. When Sara learned he was alive, he tried to enslave her too.
- Tried to enslave Dan and Trina.
- Bit Trina 3 times, wrote threatening messages on a mirror , throwing food around the kitchen and putting Jillian's lizard in his mouth.
- Tried to force Jillian, a child, into being his wife (which can be considered pedophilia) and threatened to kill a group of children if she didn't be his wife.
- When Mary Ellen, a living doll, revealed that she was responsible for bringing Slappy back to life so that he could be her husband, Slappy was ungrateful, attacking Mary Ellen, and killing her with a buzz saw (which she pulled him into in her death throes, destroying them both).
- After his body is destroyed, his soul possesses the body of Jillian. It's never revealed what happens to her.
- In a dream he had, he tried to decapitate Jimmy O'James by pulling his head off. While this turned out to be a dream, it's still reflective of his character.
- Only tried to do good deeds because he would be put to sleep forever by Jimmy O'James otherwise and was hesitant to do them.
- Contemplated killing Georgia, Stella, and their mother if he was unable to perform his good deeds. Tried to smother Stella to death when he believed she was the one thwarting his good deeds. While this turned out to be a dream he was having, it's still reflective of his character.
- In a dream he was having, upon seeing a two year old boy suffocating due to his blanket being tied too tightly around his neck, he remarked the kid deserved it, only saving his life so it could count as a good deed for him. Admitted he would have done the same thing to such a child for fun.
- Immediately after his nightmare, he continued to do evil.
- Tried to enslave Britney.
- After she refused, tried to steal her mind with the mind stealer.
- Turned Britney into a dummy.
- Worked with several other villains to serve The Menace, helping him terrorize and potentially kill kids. While he and the other villains did help the kids defeat The Menace in the end, it was only because they realized he was going to betray them and make them slaves in his park. Otherwise, Slappy would have had no problem with The Menace killing/enslaving a bunch of children.
- Threatened to cut off Ray and Brandon's heads.
- Tried to choke Ray.
- Controls Jackson Stander into doing things such as trashing the art room, stealing the answers to an upcoming history test, insulting all his family, throwing a little boy's bike onto the street, ruining cupcakes and making him say rude things on his ventriloquist act. All of this led to Jackson being grounded for the school year as well as kicked out of the Youth Center.
- Tried to strangle Jackson and when Jackson found out that Slappy was working with his sister, made him do another unknown bad thing.
- Framed Ian for all the things he himself said.
- Tried to enslave Ian, his sister Molly, their father, and their cousins Johnny and Vinny. Burned Johnny and Vinny with his boiling hot puke and tried to kill Ian, Johnny, Vinny, Molly, and Ian and Molly's father after the five of them ripped his head off in a failed attempt to kill him. Brought a bunch of dolls to life and had them attack the humans. The dolls would have killed the five humans if Slappy hadn't been stopped.
- He and Snappy planned on killing Mr. Harrison for trying to split them up (though Slappy Beware renders this book non-canon).
- After being killed, his ghost stalks Shep, causing him to act up and lose his best friend. He also came close to killing Shep more than once.
- After being repaired, he made Shep his slave.
- When being brought home by Aaron, he insulted Aaron's entire family and spit goo over them.
- He insults Cathy O'Conners, her sister and her cousin.
- Although he helped defeat Arrogotus the Mummy, he did it for his own selfish reasons and admits he wasn't interested in saving the kids from the Mummy.
- Tormented Richard and Willow in their dreams and did things like electrocuting Richard. Later hypnotized Richard's entire class into walking into the tiger exhibit at a zoo at night. All the children would have been killed by the tigers if the zookeepers hadn't arrived and sedated them with tranquilizers.
- While it's revealed that he was created by Darkwell to be evil and was told he had to do one evil deed every day he was awake to avoid being permanently put to sleep, he still decides he wants to continue being evil even after learning this was a lie and he didn't have to be evil to stay alive, eliminating this excuse.
TV series[]
- Got Amy in trouble with her family by desecrating Sara's painting with poorly painted people and saying hurtful things at her family's show and tell. He later ruined Amy's friendship with Margo by squeezing Alicia's hand until it hurt and even came close to hitting Amy's parents over the head with her dad's guitar. Even so, he still threatened to keep ruining Amy's life unless she agreed to become his slave and that he could hurt Amy and her family and get Amy locked up in a mental ward. When Sara learned he was alive, he tried to make her his slave as well.
- Turned Zane into a dummy and threatened to turn Dan and Trina into dummies as well if they told their parents about it. He actually attempted to transform Dan at one point.
- Turned Zane back into a dummy and destroyed him, along with Rocky, the friendly dummy who stopped him previously.
- Tried to force Katie, a child, to be his bride, making him a pedophile. Katie is even younger than Jillian, making it even worse.
- Possessed Harrison after his body was destroyed.
- Despite him having some comedic moments, his actions are still taken very seriously.
Trivia[]
- The version from the 2015 film and his sequel does not count for being minor amoral, partially affable, and somewhat insecure.
