What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
Books[]
- Had a "total lack of sorrow" over his evil, but loving mother's death, literally mocking her corpse right after she died.
- Took advantage of the Redwallers’ hospitality by weeping crocodile tears about his mother's death and was completely ungrateful to them providing him refugee. He immediately started stealing their valuables so he could escape and sell them. When he was caught, he murdered the old mouse, Methuselah, and though he was briefly shocked by the murder and noted that he didn't mean to hit him so hard, he quickly gets over it and gloats that it served him right for not getting out of the way.
- As an adult, he became an infamous slaver, stealing children from their families and taking them to Malkariss, who would enslave them to doing hard labor everyday to build his kingdom while being whipped and starved by his horde of rats to the point of where many would die from the abuse or labor.
- He's implied to have killed or maimed slaves who tried to escape, and approves of Halftail "finishing off" a young otter who was too weak to move.
- Blamed the Redwallers, especially Matthias the Warrior for the disfigurement of half of his face and killing Asmodeus the adder before he could, even though the former was entirely his fault and Matthias had no way of knowing Slagar was even alive.
- Kidnapped the children of Redwall and journeyed to Malkariss. On the way, he abused the children, especially Mattimeo.
- Murders his own if they fail him or complain about a job he’s given to them.
- Sold his youngest and most loyal minion, Vitch the adolescent rat, as a slave.
- After every slave run, he betrays his allies by turning them against one another, then will kill any survivors so he can claim the entire reward for himself.
- Made secret plans to usurp Malkariss and Nadaz after his own stone fortress had been completed and rule both above and below ground using the slaves.
- Noticing Matthias and his friends in the hallway to the underground kingdom, he has the ratguards he was with attack and try to kill them only for them to be defeated, prompting Slagar to run away to Malkariss.
- After the children slaves slew Malkariss and saved Matthias who would free them, Slagar attempts to kill him using his own sword only for the children to interfere and chase him away.
- Murdered his youngest slaver, Vitch the rat, despite that doing so lessened his chances of survival.
Animated Adaptation Exclusively[]
In the Redwall TV series by Nelvana, a few changes to Slagar/Chickenhound were made:
- In the first season, both he and his mother stole from the Redwallers, when Chickenhound mortally wounds Methuselah by beating him with a lamp-post, his mother, despite taking advantage of the hospitality of the abbey dwellers, is horrified by the deed, while her son expressing zero remorse. Although, the mouse doesn’t succumb to his wounds until two days later. Chickenhound escapes alone through a tunnel flooded with porridge, abandoning Sela to the Redwallers, resulting in her being cast out of Redwall and killed by Cluny at the front gates.
- As an adult, Slagar claims to Mattimeo that Matthias betrayed and killed his sainted mother. Slagar further claiming that he did nothing wrong and that Matthias hunted him down like a criminal. As this story contains multiple inaccuracies as pointed out by Mattimeo and Chickenhound's lack of grief about Sela's death, it is clear Slagar only pretended to feel sadness for his mother as a way to milk sympathy and crush the boy's belief in his father.
- He makes an attempt to kill Matthias by throwing a spear at him, however, the projectile is intercepted by Log-a-Log, in which costs the shrew his life.
- In one final attempt to kill Matthias and Orlando, Slagar throws a large rock at them. The two break the stoney projectile with ease and the resulting spray causes Slagar to stagger back, and fall into the well.
