~ Raleigh confronting Sly. |
Sir Raleigh (also simply known as Raleigh) is a major antagonist of the Sly Cooper video game series, appearing in the first title, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus as the main antagonist of "Episode 1: Tide of Terror". He is a frog pirate who acts as the chief machinist of the Fiendish Five.
He was voiced by the late Kevin Blackton and by the late Sukekiyo Kameyama in the Japanese dub.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- As shown in his backstory, he was an aristocrat who grew bored of his life of luxury, and for that, he turned to piracy and wrecked many ships and airplanes before proceeding to rob them. He is mentioned to have sunk 50 ships, and it is also shown that he downed at least one airplane. Considering how many people can be in ships and airplanes, he potentially has the highest kill count in the series.
- This sets him apart from other villains that Sly has faced, as they usually suffered hardships in their origins, such as growing up in poverty and/or treated poorly by everyone else around them.
- Given his wicked grin in his character introduction cutscene and the fact that he keeps the airplane and some of the ships he has sunk floating around in the hull of his ship as trophies, Raleigh is highly sadistic and very proud of his evil.
- After being recruited by Clockwerk, he helps the Fiendish Five in breaking into the Cooper household and killing Sly Cooper's parents. While Clockwerk went after Sly's father Conner, and it's unknown who killed the mother, Raleigh is still an accomplice in the incident. He also was the one who found the Thievius Racoonus, as his gloved hands are seen grabbing the book, making him stand out slightly.
- He doesn't treat his minions well. At first, he seems to congratulate them for doing a great job, before proceeding to berate them for their negligence of the lower deck, stating if they had done their jobs right, they would've sunk a hundred ships by now. He even threatened to whip them for two weeks straight if they do not protect a key from Sly.
- While he does have a pet named Ropen Lopen, there's no indication that he cares about it. The fact that it was residing in the ship graveyard hints Raleigh doesn't treat his pet very well.
- During his encounter with Sly Cooper, he stated that he should’ve snuff him out as well during there raid on the house, showing he had no problem with murdering children.
- There's no real proof that Raleigh cared for his fellow teammates. An example is with Muggshot, in while Raleigh believes Sly won't be able to beat him, there wasn't enough proof if he had faith in him. Furthermore, the fact he refers to him as a "cohort" suggests Raleigh only treats him with professionalism.
- While his habit of dramatically yelling while being calm beforehand is comedic, he is taken seriously as a threat by the narrative.
- Unlike the other members of the Fiendish Five, with the exception of Clockwerk, and most Sly Cooper villains in general, Raleigh does not have any redeeming qualities or even a Freudian Excuse for his actions, as he only commits his crimes out of boredom and for the lulz.
