Sir Miles Axlerod, also simply known as Sir Axlerod, or the Lemon Kingpin, is the main antagonist of Pixar's 12th full-length animated feature film Cars 2, the second installment of the Cars franchise.
He is the manipulative leader of the Lemons who wanted to turn the entire world against alternative fuels and make money out of it along with Professor Zündapp. However, his plans were foiled when Mater exposed his crimes. He was the CEO of Axlerod Industries and Mater's arch-nemesis.
He is initially presented as a friendly and well-intentioned honest host of the World Grand Prix, a race created to demonstrate his "environmentally friendly" alternative fuel Allinol. However, deep down, Axlerod is a relentless and callous terrorist kingpin of the Lemons, a group of "loser" cars who want to tarnish the reputation of Allinol (which turned out to be a scam) and alternative fuel as a whole, so that they could prosper and make a profit by selling oil.
He was voiced by Eddie Izzard.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General/Background[]
- He invented Allinol, which was supposedly alternative fuel, but was actually a highly explosive type of gasoline he would use as the required fuel for the race cars in his World Grand Prix as his plan to paint alternative fuel in a bad light.
- Not only that, but it was also designed to actually kill cars in some cases, such as Rod "Torque" Redline and Lightning McQueen, with McQueen only surviving because Sarge swapped his fuel with Fillmore's organic biofuel.
- He manipulated the Lemons into becoming dangerous criminals by reminding them of how non-lemons treated them, making him responsible for their actions.
- Although he didn't threaten or abuse his right-hand Professor Zündapp, or the other Lemons, he didn't show any care for them, as they are getting along simply out of pragmatism. The same is true of Zündapp's interactions with the other Lemons.
- Even though he may have been humiliated in the past for being a lemon, and breaking down in the middle of a forest, it comes off as a petty excuse compared to all of his deeds, especially when he amasses a huge amount of respect overall to move on.
- While he does have some small comedic moments such as when he leaked oil and blamed it on Mater, none of them really lighten his character and just highlight how cruel and uncaring he is, and his crimes are played completely seriously.
- While he does lack screen time, his crimes are presented onscreen, thus, the crimes he has committed are dead serious.
- Unlike some villains from the Cars/Planes universe, Axelrod (alongside his right-hand Professor Zündapp) lacks any redeeming qualities and is one of the most heinous villains in the whole series. Also, while he isn’t sadistic like Zündapp, Axlerod is still uncaring and cruel as he had no qualms with the injuries that the racers of the World Grand Prix received when their engines exploded by being hit by the EMP emitter, all while showing no remorse for his actions.
- Also, despite being shown to be very kind and supportive to almost everyone he meets, it's only an act to cover his true nature.
Cars 2[]
- When he noticed that he was leaking oil during the opening ceremony in Tokyo, he framed Mater for doing it, in order to make sure no one discoverd that he's not truly an electric car due to Axlerod's motor engine to be one of the worst ever made.
- When being contacted by Professor Zündapp that Rod Redline has secretly passed on the information to Mater, Axlerod orders the Professor to seek out Mater and kill him before any damage can be done.
- When Axlerod made a special meeting with 4 of the crime lords of the Lemons in Porto Carsa, Italy, which is where the next race takes place. He claimed he wished he could be with the others in the important meeting with them, but claiming his clutch assembly broke. It is likely he would lie to the crime lords, just so there is a potential spy within the meeting, which was true since Finn & Holley were spying on them.
- He and Zündapp ordered Grem and Acer to use cameras during the World Grand Prix that would cause the engines of the racers to explode, causing several crashes and injuries, just to paint alternative fuel in a bad light so that their fuel would be worth more money. Also, before the race in Italy, he lied to the press that he went to court and had his scientists confirm that Allinol is safe, so his minions can inflict more harm to race-cars during the race.
- He contacted Zündapp and gave him the order to have Lightning McQueen killed when McQueen said his intentions to still use Allinol for the last race, planning to have Grem and Acer kill him while forcing Mater to watch.
- While he does tells McQueen that he has "hopes" of him winning and "thanks" McQueen for his decision to use Allinol in the last race, it’s was only for pragmatic reasons, as he only thanked him to get him to participate in the final race just so he can be killed to prevent him from backing out in order to find Mater whom Axlerod's minions had managed to capture.
- He planted a bomb on Mater's hood as a back-up plan so that if McQueen survived the camera, Mater would go to McQueen's pit and Zündapp would blow it up, which would kill dozens to hundreds of innocent cars.
- When Mater arrived at Buckingham Palace to confront Axlerod for his crimes, he tries to falsely debunk and denied Mater's claims and trying to tell everyone that he was crazy, only to be forced to deactivate the bomb at one last second.
- While he did deactivate the bomb on Mater's hood, unwillingly saving everyone within the vicinity, he only did this to pathetically save his own skin, showing his cowardliness.
- Even when he was caught by the police and exposed his motor (which is one of the worst engine ever made) as same that Redline photograph, he still didn't show any remorse for what he had done but simply asked how Mater managed to find out his secret.
Trivia[]
- Due to his true nature being shown only at the end of the film, some people say he doesn't qualify as he hasn't done onscreen villainy effects coming off as not heinous enough to qualify. However, this is not true as Axlerod caused lots of racers to be hurt by Allinol, even ordering Lightning McQueen to be killed by using his Allinol and facade to manipulate those into being harmed and make alternative fuel look bad and that fact that he planted a bomb on Mater's hood whilst offscreen still had onscreen effects. Not to mention he was the one who created it just so he could gain wealthy by having everyone flock back to oil fields which he owned one of the biggest.
- He makes a cameo apperarance in Cars 3 via a photo of himself in Sterling's office at Rust-eze. Given Sterling's shared greedy nature, it is unknown what their relationship was prior to the main events of Cars 3 itself, and how much it would affect Axlerod's own Pure Evil status.
- It's also possible that Sterling might've known about his plans, since he could've been his friend (or might have been without knowing the plans) or was an enemy of him knowing about the plans or not knowing, but not being friends. This hasn't been confirmed yet because he isn’t a Lemon.
