Simon Phoenix is the main antagonist of the 1993 sci-fi action film Demolition Man.
He is the most crazed and dangerous criminal of the 20th century, and only the toughest cop could be a match for him. He is John Spartan's arch-nemesis.
He was portrayed by Wesley Snipes.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Runs his own criminal empire in South Central within Los Angeles, having all other street gangs, drug dealers and some murderers under his control.
- Held 30 bus passengers hostage for trespassing his building.
- As he was condemned for his crimes, he framed John Spartan for not caring the hostages and responsible for their deaths, which results in his confinement as well.
- After he was released from his confinement and was granted new strength to adapt the future, he immediately kills the workers at the cryo-prison and overpowered several SAPD officers.
- Stole some weapons from a museum, as all weapons were now banned and the remaining ones were displayed there.
- Attempted to kill Dr. Raymond Cocteau when he ran into him. However, Cocteau had manipulated him into not killing him.
- As he help out Cocteau in exchange for being able to be in charge of all the coastal cities of San Angeles, Phoenix makes a list of a few convicts to be released, in order to assist him.
- In a deleted scene, after Phoenix manages to escape from the sewers, he sees Spartan's old friend Zachary Lamb and shoots him before stealing Huxley's police cruiser and escaping onto the road.
- He presumably lied to Cocteau about killing Edgar Friendly, and decided to take matters in his own hands. He has one of his henchmen kill Cocteau and throw his body to the fire.
- Attempting to free the inmates of the cryo-prison and create his own gang of criminals.
- Sensing that Spartan is attempting to break free, he then precedes to drop him in a vat of defrosting fluid that will burn him to a crisp, but Spartan managed to escape by using the cryo-fluid and freeze him solid before finally delivering the killing blow.
- Unlike Cocteau, who at least have anti-villainous qualities, Phoenix is outright evil and have no redeeming qualities and serves as the embodiment of chaos provoking strict order within society.
- While he does have comedic moments, he is still taken completely seriously by the other characters.
- While he has a horrible death of getting slowly frozen with an apparently extremely low temperature, it's not played for sympathy as he deserved it for his vile actions.
Trivia[]
- In a scene that was cut from the film but included in the novelization, Simon feels sorry for Raymond Cocteau's castrated assistant, Bob, who he invites to join his gang, explaining why Bob is still alive and now hanging out with Simon after Simon killed Cocteau. If this were the case, then only his film version is Pure Evil as he only uses Bob as his personal assistant and nothing else whereas his novelization version does not count as Pure Evil.
