Oroku Saki, also known as the Shredder, is one of the two main antagonists (along with Ra's al Ghul) of the 2019 direct-to-video animated crossover film Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
He is the ruthless leader of the ninja clan, the Foot, and the arch enemy of the Ninja Turtles. Shredder partnered up with Ra's and the League of Assassins to help Ra's lay waste to the planet and wipe out nearly all of humanity for access to the Lazarus Pit, achieving pseudo-immortality, while plotting to kill Ra's and usurp his cult to hijack his plan to rule the world for the next thousand years.
He was voiced by Andrew Kishino, who also voiced Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat and Izuma in Star Wars: Visions.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- Partners up with Ra's al Ghul, stealing the equipment needed for Ra's machine so they can use the Joker venom-laced ooze to mutate every human being on the planet into mindless and feral copies of the Joker that kill everyone they see on sight, having all of humanity slaughter each other, leaving Ra's a ruined blood-bathed world to rule over in exchange for access to the Lazarus Pit and achieving pseudo-immortality. It should also be noted that the process of mutation is extremely painful, the victim will suffer greatly, and the process can even be fatal.
- It should also be noted that at the end of the film, after Ra's defeat, Shredder admits he planned on betraying and killing Ra's upon achieving pseudo-immortality to take over the League of Assassins, hijack Ra's plan, spread the venom-laced mutagen himself, and have nearly all of humanity slaughter each other so Shredder can rebuild the world in his image and rule the planet for a thousand years as its immortal ruler, proving that his partnership with him was out of pragmatism and not genuine loyalty.
- He brutally murders one of his men by tossing a shuriken into his forehead without even blinking so he can stop the minion from revealing information about the Turtles.
- Uses one of Ra's men as a guinea pig to demonstrate the effects of the mutagen, painfully mutating him, and Shredder notes the mutation process may even be lethal in a cold tone.
- Personally massacres nearly all of Arkham Asylum's guards so he can meet the Joker, get the formula for his venom, and then free him, with one brutal death of punching his claws into a guard's chest to kill him.
- Double-crosses Penguin by having his ninjas kill all of Penguin's henchmen and personally threatens to kill him if he asks for money for payment in return for providing him the final component of their doomsday machine, the Wayne Cloud Seeder.
- He constantly abuses Dr. Baxter Stockman, holding him hostage and threatening him with death to force him into serving him and building his equipment.
- After being defeated by the Turtles and the Bat Family, he falls into the same vat of chemicals that created the Joker, causing him to become Jokerized he escapes the wreckage of Ace Chemicals, making him a Karma Houdini.
- Though it can be argued that he may now have moral agency issues due to being "Jokerized" by the Joker venom, this point becomes moot when one takes into account the bloodthirsty and deranged psychopath he was before the chemical affected him, so he did so many horrible things beforehand to stand out even if his further actions may be done without thinking them clearly.
Trivia[]
- This version of the Shredder is a rare case of a Pure Evil villain, as he is approved despite now likely having moral agency issues due to gaining insanity. However, it should be noted that such potential moral agency issues don't prevent him from qualifying, as this Shredder enacted his worst actions prior to his life-changing transformation.
