Tonight I dine on turtle soup.
~ Shredder's most infamous quote.
All these years, I have been seeking to recreate the mutagen, and you... you just handed it to me.
~ Shredder to Splinter.

Oroku Saki, better known as The Shredder, is the main antagonist of Nickelodeon's 26th feature film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the secondary antagonist of its sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

He is the leader of the terrorist organization known as the Foot Clan who has terrorized New York City for years, being responsible for multiple murders and attacks. He, alongside his adoptive son Eric Sacks, planned on releasing deadly gases onto the city which would have killed a majority of its citizens. Eventually, they would offer an antidote for a price, which would have allowed them to gain control over the city. Upon breaking out of prison, Shredder forms an alliance with Krang and becomes his second-in-command and creates a portal to summon him so he can rule over the world as a god.

In the first film, he was portrayed by Tohoru Masamune. In the second film, he was portrayed by Brian Tee.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles[]

  • It is stated that years prior to the events of the film that he and the Foot Clan had terrorized the citizens of New York for a long time, stepping upon others and killing them. In the second film, it is confirmed that he has a body count of at least 32 known people.
  • He orders his minions to hold hostages in a subway to lure the turtles, and if they didn't show up, they would bomb the subway and kill them.
  • He defeated the Turtles and Splinter during their first fight.
  • Alongside Eric Sacks, his adoptive son, he planned on releasing a flesh eating poison onto New York City to kill a majority of it's citizens, making it "a quarantine zone". After their actions horrified world governments, they would sell the antidote to the poison made from the mutagen for a price, allowing them both to take over New York City.
  • After the turtles deactivated his device to spread the gas, Shredder would begin to destroy Sacks's tower to ensure the poison would spread by knocking the tank into the city.
  • Though he did adopt Eric Sacks as a child, there is not very much that indicates that he cares for him and he may have very well raised him into becoming the greedy villain he is now.
    • Even if he did care about him at one point, he likely subverted it in the sequel considering he doesn't mention him while he was assisting Krang, despite knowing that he would cause great harm.

Out of the Shadows[]

  • He breaks himself out of prison after being transferred to another facility, with the help of the Foot Clan and Baxter Stockman.
  • He agrees to help Krang find the other two pieces of the Arc Capacitor to build a portal to allow him to bring his Technodrome to Earth to invade it, only if he helped him kill the Ninja Turtles for revenge.
    • While unconfirmed if he knew Krang would attempt to destroy Earth, Shredder seemingly was still aware of the fact that Krang could potentially cause great harm given that he agreed to help him, in his words, "take down Earth".
    • Although he does help Krang, it was only out of pragmatic reasons as he wanted to rule alongside him.
  • He finds Bebop and Rocksteady in their favorite bar reveal he never looking partners but looking for " errand boys" he threatens them with blade if they refuse serve for him, he does not hesitate to kill both of them, which they fearfully agree.
  • After turning Bebop and Rocksteady into mutant animals, he ordered Stockman to use the mutagen to create more soldiers for him in order to help his goals.
  • After recollecting the other two pieces of the Arc Capacitor, Shredder opened a portal in the sky and allowed Krang and his Technodrome to arrive in New York, endangering the entire planet.
    • Shorly before this, he betrayed Stockman despite the fact that he was loyal to him. While doing so, he orders his men to take him to facility in Tokyo.
    • He then planned on killing Krang as revenge for betraying him, only failing to do so because he froze him. This is also noted to be hypocritical, as he had just betrayed Stockman as well.
  • Although Krang is worse than him as he was implied to have destroyed planets and wanted to do the same thing to Earth, he has more resources than Shredder as he has powerful technology at his disposal, so this isn't a prevention.

Trivia[]

  • The filmmakers behind Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) originally intended for Eric Sacks to be the film's version of the Shredder, but this concept was scrapped in the middle of filming due to feelings that they should have instead an authentical Japanese actor play the character, leading to Tohoru Masamune's casting. Had the original plan been kept and William Fichtner had played the Shredder too, the Shredder and Erick Sacks would have been just a single Pure Evil character.
