Money cannot buy the honor which you have earned tonight. You make us all proud. Only effort, discipline, loyalty, earn the right to wear the dragon dogi. You are here because the outside world rejects you. This is your family. I am your father. I want you all to become full members of the Foot. There is a new enemy, freaks of nature who interfere with our business. You are my eyes and ears. FIND THEM! Together, we will punish these... creatures. These... turtles!!
~ The Shredder's first lines, to the New York street gang that he is trying to make into new ninja.

Oroku Saki, better known under his alias The Shredder, is the main antagonist of the 1990 action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and its 1991 sequel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze. Once the rival of Homato Yoshi, he became the ruthless leader of the New York City ninja gang the Foot Clan. He is the arch-nemesis of Master Splinter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

He was portrayed by James Saito in the first film, François Chau in the sequel, and Kevin Nash as the mutated Super Shredder. Both were voiced by David McCharen.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

In General/Background[]

  • Although he doesn't physically attack the Foot Clan members in the sequel like he did in the first movie, this doesn't mean that he started caring for them. Even still, it doesn’t eliminate the possibility of him still doing so off-screen.
  • Despite once being in love with Tang Shen, he enviously murdered her with no remorse after she chose to be with Yoshi which shows that he never truly cared for her in the first place.
    • It could be possible that he only liked her out of sexual desire instead of her as a person, or that he just saw her as another trophy to win against Yoshi. Even if he did have genuine care for her at one point, he likely subverted it after she chose to be with Yoshi.
  • When Yoshi discovered what happened to his wife, Shredder used his shock as an advantage to kill him too.
  • Considering the very fact that he killed Yoshi and Tang Shen out of jealousy/revenge, it's very likely that he killed many other people that wronged him off screen for very petty reasons.
  • He sliced off Splinter's ear when the latter clawed at his face for killing his owners.
  • He built his own ninja clan, known as the Foot, by luring in troubled teenagers and street thugs, warping their minds into believe he cared for them.
  • He forced harsh training onto his soldiers, brutally beating them to near death (or presumably) letting Tatsu do it) should any of them fail his expectations.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)[]

  • After April O'Neil announces her theory of the increasing crime rate across New York City being the work of the Foot, he orders his men to silence her for knowing too much.
  • After the Turtles rescue April, he kidnaps Splinter and tortures him for information on the Turtles' weaknesses.
  • He bribes Danny for the whereabouts of the Turtles.
  • Once he finally confronts the Turtles, he sadistically taunts them over "killing" Splinter, despite not knowing of his survival until shortly after.
  • He tricks the Turtles to throw away their weapons under an exchange to spare Leonardo's life, only to prepare to kill him anyways.
  • When Splinter arrives and reveals his true identity, Shredder lunges towards him to finish where he began with his ear (i.e. try to kill him).

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze[]

  • He kidnaps a wolf and snapping turtle from the Bronx Zoo and TGRI head scientist Jordan Perry, forcing him to expose them to the ooze to create the mutant monsters Tokka and Rahzar.
  • He immediately attempts to kill Tokka and Rahzar due to their stupidity, only changing his mind because of their brute strength.
  • He kidnaps Raphael and watches as the other Turtles are bested by spike traps and the wrath of Tokka and Rahzar, taunting Raph that he will be next after his brothers die.
  • After the Turtles escape with Perry, he allows Tokka and Rahzar to "have fun" trashing the city.
  • He orders the Turtles to surrender themselves by the next day or he will unleash Tokka and Rahzar on Central Park.
  • After the Turtles defeat and cure Tokka and Rahzar, he snatches the last canister of Ooze, boasting over creating an entire army of mutants.
  • With a tiny vial left of Ooze, he takes a woman hostage, threatening to turn her into a mutant. He even tells the Turtles that he plans on making more mutants using the Ooze with the intent of killing them with.
  • After drinking the vial to transform into Super Shredder, he effortlessly sadistically kicks the Turtles around.
  • He knocks down an entire pier to take out the Turtles. However, this instead led to his own downfall and he was crushed to death.

Trivia[]

  • He is the first version of the Shredder to be Pure Evil, followed by Utrom Shredder (both his original and alternative reality versions), Tengu Shredder, his 2014 reboot version, his Rise version and his Batman vs. TMNT version.
  • While this version of the Shredder is Pure Evil, his novelization version does not count as Pure Evil, as he was angered by Yoshi when he killed off his brother, Oroku Naga, when defending Tang Shen, like in the original Mirage Comics.
  • His rivalry with Yoshi over Shen would be adapted with his 2012 version. Both Shredder's murder Shen, although this version did it purposely and his 2012 counterpart did it by accident.
